Ancient Times #13/94 From: keith.langley@mdcs.com (Keith Langley) Date: Mon, 05 Dec 1994 12:26:04 +0000 (This is the electronic version of ANCIENT TIMES, covering events in the worlds of ONE TRUE FAITH and ANCIENT EMPIRES. It is published approximately every 20 days. For info, contact keith.langley@mdcs.com) Ancient Times "All the news that's fit to chisel" (Game #3 of Ancient Empires) Late Fall, year 2 A.A. Issue # 94-13 Schloss expands to three empires - Unprecedented diplomatic success has enabled Schloss to control the nations of Ezak and Hopran. Schloss has now turned its espionage and diplomatic efforts to Thorta, where the village of Mount has already defected to Schloss. Ataro and Hioken merge - The nation of Hioken has fallen under Ataro's control, without a battle. A village chief supported by Ataro assassinated and replaced the unpopular king of that nation. First battle ends in defeat for Sumatray's invaders - Sumatray failed to capture the village of Eton, Egham. The large Sumatrayan army crumbled with the first few casualties. Gython and Monola rumoured close to union - With all of Monola except the capital eager to join Gython, the rumours of a royal marriage are flying. A spokesman for John the Benevolent of Gython confirmed that he has proposed the marriage of his son and heir to the king of Monola's daughter. Meanwhile, agitation in Ardic for a union of the northern island is growing; the village of Concordat has joined Gython. Kenday expanding on both fronts - Eton's and Slatra's villages are caving in to pressure to join Kenday; a total of eight villages have joined. Rosel adds holding in Jurong - Along with Labor, Yealin, Rosel now holds title to the village of Kyto in Jurong after its people deposed their headman and asked Rosel to send them a more enlightened one. Rules change regarding food use - I will be experimenting with a food use in battle rule this game. Each combat unit on both sides in a battle will require an additional 1 food, over and above the normal monthly consumption. This does not include craftsmen, chiefs or other economic and support units, but it does include elephants and oarsmen. Antediluvian Times (Game #2 of Ancient Empires) Sumatray gains Shen, Horsel - Sumatray added another village to its strong position in Horsel. Midodo invades Thardic - In two invasions, Midodo attacked and captured the villages of Kinta and Ver. Thorta repelled at Schloss capital - A sturdy force of 4000 soldiers was turned back by determined skirmishers and stout wooden walls. Schloss' only warship was captured by the invaders, but the city of Estolam held. Thorta's ram was pelted with missiles from above and was unable to break down the fort, and their tunnellers were met by a defending counter- mine. Epistles from Erth (Game #2 of ONE TRUE FAITH) Tenth God appears - I lied when I said the game was full; I found room to squeeze in one more. WELKIN is the neutral God of Knowledge. His temples are observatories and libraries, and His followers are determined seekers of information. Welkin gets a free Divine Eye per turn, which cannot be blocked by Divine Protection. He also may consider one puzzle automatically answered in each debate (like Chicane's ability - but he KNOWS the answer; Chicane STEALS the answer). CORRECTION: It was erroneously reported that Tyr would use the puzzle method of debate resolution. Like Votlansh, He prefers to use the abstract method. Rules note: captives can't teleport - The "Teleport" miracle requires a complicated ritual that cannot be performed in difficult circumstances such as being locked in a dungeon. This is also true of other non-"escape" miracles; if You want Your priests to wiggle out of tough spots You will have to teach them "Escape". Storch captures Paris - A western human army, mostly cavalry, attacked and captured Paris for Storch. The attack came from Anjou and Normandy, and was triggered by rumours of particularly good wine stored in Paris. Parisian hobgoblins were slaughtered without mercy. The God of Drunkenness was most pleased by His followers' success. Magian's forces take Brandenburg - The God of Disease sent armies from Brunswick and Thuringia into Brandenburg. His troops used poisoned sling stones and archer superiority to win the battle with very light losses. Most of the inhabitants were ratmen; the survivors converted to Magianism. Chicane repelled in Fezzan - The Trickster God sent a force of desert swordsmen from Rabat into Fezzan, against a superior force with artillery and a roc rider. Chicane's ranks were decimated, and the survivors were forced to flee. Fezzan remains defiantly non-religious. LETTERS: (Anonymous) Will trade a mountain province for another province on the eastern side of the map. If interested, send particulars through the GM.
