ARENA: many questions / observations From: tim.hruby@his.com (Tim Hruby) Date: Wed, 07 Dec 1994 11:07:38 +0000 As the subject sez, I got 'em. Some are directed at Scott, but others are aimed at players (as Scott probably won't answer them ;-) 1) I'd like to challenge the way some of the weapon attributes are listed in the rules. The issues of 2H wpns with -MG, and cost as a factor of game balance, not reality have already been mentioned, so I won't go into them. My problem is with the parry attributes. Swords are listed with a parry _penalty_, while weapons like maces and axes are parry-neutral. Given nothing more than the presence of the guard, shouldn't that be a parry _bonus_? It need not be as great as that for the fencing weapons, but it should still be a bonus, given how these weapons were used. I include the 2H sword here, as it is more able to parry than other 2H wpns, such as the axe, scythe or hammer. 2) I assume that the shield riposte/bash routine has not been implemented yet. I've never seen even an expert fighter use one, though weapon ripostes are not uncommon. 3) What, if any, team functions have been implemented? Best Team of the Week? Team match-ups? 4) Sometimes when I win a fight, I win a lot more than $100. Anybody have any theories on why this happens? Is it a bug (it could be, that's why I mention it); does it have to do with the action on the fight, or what? 5) Any theories as to who the mysterious observers are that watch some, but not all, fights? 6) Is there any benefit to having a longer weapon (i.e. increased initiative, or chance to hit, ability to fend off opponent, etc), or is it just a fatigue drain? I guess that's it for now. Let's not be shy now. If you don't have hard facts, opinions are welcome.
