Undefended stargates would seem more likely as places the RIP would use to harass shipping, by shutting them down they actually reduce their opportunities. Are they actually so weak right now that the best they can do is annoy? There's no profit in attacking gates, although it's easy & safe. Does anyone knwo the current RIP roster? Is this just Neil doing his best from the West Pacific? There seems to be some misunderstandings concerning posted lists. Instead of reiterating the falsehoods that have been spread, let me clarify what is working. On individual ships, posting entire affliations does indeed WORK. What doesn't work is the following: You will not trigger a battle when you have XXX affliation posted list on your enemy list and the XXX affliation list has another affliation posted. IE. Posting an entire affliation on an affliation posted list will not cause an individual ship to attack just because it has All affliation posted on the enemy list. The solution is to have each ship put an affliation on their enemy list when you need to attack that affliation. RTG is working on allowing affliations to be put on affliation posted list, but that is currently not in. 2. Stargates stargates. Currently the BSE program counts all stargates (functional or non-functional) in determining the transit times for stargates. So, damaging a stargate will not reduce transit times. You need to completely destroy it so that it does not show up at the space hex as a position. Some people have pointed out that this may have been untrue in the past (ie non-functional stargates would not have been counted). If this is true, we may want to inform RTG. ABM were mediocre programmers as best. Hope this helps ------------------------------ From: steve668@dallas.relay.ucm.org Date: Wed, 11 Jan 1995 07:42:56 CST Subject: BSE: STARGATES Brad, The RIP were devastated over the last year. At the 3rd Battle of Upreach (from IMP perspective; 4th from RIP perspective, and 2nd from SMS perspective), the RIP lost almost 20 capital ships to the SMS & IMP. At the battle of New Beginnings, the RIP lost another dozen capital ships (and their 2nd top admiral) to the USS/IMP fleets. At the battle of Pittsburg (not sure which one it was, but it was the only one the IMP responded to, and Kerry was in it to as a RIP), another half dozen capital ships were lost, and as I understand it, in all the battles of Pittsburg, the SMS has destroyed some 2 dozen RIP ships. Recently, as a followup to the battle of Demons Gorge, 2 more RIP capital ships were destroyed (not "reported" yet because i'm not yet sure if they were fleeing the upcoming attack on the RIP colony or running in extra weapons to it. All in all, with all these major battles, and numerous minor ones, the RIP have lost 4 colonies (not counting the one on Little), and some 45-50 ships, most of which were Corsair or larger. The RIP have few assets left with which to wage war, and damaging stargates must be all he can do, I would guess. Perhaps his plan was to ambush the freighters that come out to repair the gates. Steve ------------------------------ From: steve668@dallas.relay.ucm.org Date: Wed, 11 Jan 1995 07:51:02 CST Subject: BSE: QSN Information Hotline To: anonymous QSN poster You are correct, in the past ABM did *NOT* count damaged gates against the transit times. If RTG shows that the computer DOES count them, then ABM had to have done it by hand. Not unheard of, and as I understand it, these "by hand" things are a constant source of frustration to Pete. And as for ABM's programming, remind me to tell you about the 2 IMP colonies we found occupying the exact same space/sector/square... and floating in deep space (and one of 'em was really 12 systems away).... yep, Mike P. was sure a great programmer there. Lefter is off limits to everyone... period (not that you can get past the planetary force field anyways, but if you try, you'll face the colony guns). These are the only no-posting-needed, immediate death penalty locations. John J. (ISS PD) is working on the complete list to be published soon. And for those would-be tresspassers in Geneb, I personally have Dreadnoughts waiting for you, and have an ISP player (other than me) whose sole purpose in life is to defend the system stationed there now.
