Sure it's all bluff, but it was creatively written and to my mind it was just a simple and entertaining way for Anders to say: "I'm going to Komarken, and I'm going to try to take it over." That's fine, so far as I'm concerned. Other people who want to take over a city might decide to go elsewhere, or they might decide to "duke" it out with Anders right away (a real stupid idea, IMO), or they might contact Anders to see if they can ally with him. The Tribune thus served both a game function and allowed some neat role- playing at the same time. The response from ABSTAIN was, I suspect, simply reactionary bluster, but it raises some interesting concerns. What can we expect from Atlantis? Are there a bunch of experienced Atlantis (or other PBM) players who are starting out with large focused alliances planning to turn Atlantis into nothing but another wargame? Or will loners actually have a chance to forge their own way? Let's have some more role-playing, I say! I hope the players in this game have enough imagination to keep Atlantis from becoming nothing but a playing field for mindless juggernaut factions to lumber around smashing everyone smaller than themselves. Let's have some politics! (And let's see the political landscape creatively reflected in the Atlantis Times, along with other game-related information - instead of the irrelevant ripoffs of bad fiction that seem to dominate the Times in the ongoing earlier version of Atlantis.) I want to see more stuff like the Komarken Tribune - even if the next issue announces the triumph of ABSTAIN over ANL. << Brent ---------------------------------------------------------- From owner-atl-players@tango.rahul.net Fri Jan 20 11:36:11 1995 Return-Path: <owner-atl-players@tango.rahul.net> Received: from tango.rahul.net by microplex.com (4.1/SMI-4.1/920826) id AA03132; Fri, 20 Jan 95 11:36:11 PST Received: by tango.rahul.net id AA11813 (5.67b8/IDA-1.5 for real-atl-players); Fri, 20 Jan 1995 11:10:05 -0800 Received: from lune.csc.liv.ac.uk by tango.rahul.net with SMTP id AA11796 (5.67b8/IDA-1.5 for <atl-players@tango.rahul.net>); Fri, 20 Jan 1995 11:10:00 -0800 Received: from loire.csc.liv.ac.uk by lune.csc.liv.ac.uk (8.6.9/LUCS-DTS-2.0) with ESMTP id TAA06427; Fri, 20 Jan 1995 19:09:54 GMT Received: by loire.csc.liv.ac.uk (8.6.8/LUCS-DTS-2.0D) id TAA05268; Fri, 20 Jan 1995 19:09:53 GMT From: "J.P. Some people on this mailing list sound like they have already started Atlantis2.0. Has one turn been and gone already? or is it just the players from version 1 who are already knowledgeable. I will receive my startup this monday night. Is it the first turn? I have a question, and as all good questions seem to be, it's about those combat rules. The rules seem to say that swords, riding skill+horse, etc add to your attack skill. Elsewhere they state that being in a building grants a +2 to defense. I am uncertain as to whether the effective attack and defense scores in combat are the same, or have different values. Obviously armor grants a chance not to die, but is it possible to have a cunning unit of knights with a hot-knife-through-butter attack, who accidentally have no defense and get wastedby any hit? Also, I find it amusing that people are forming alliances this early on - perhaps an experienced player could put pen to paper to explain why it is not better to see how other factions actually behave before declaring war or peace? One good thing about the vast quantities of mail...it's summit to read while waiting for the next turn to be processed! health and good trading friends! Imagine Black Beard, Machiaveli, Napolean, Vlad Tepis, Genghis Khan, and a cast of minor sadists joined together in one alliance; working together as brothers for their mutual profit at the expense of all others. That's us. You, Brent and everyone else will just have to wait and see if it is 'reactionary bluster', 'humorous response', or the _GAWD_AWFUL_ _TRUTH_. I'd advise selecting another direction if you have a weak stomach or peaceful intent. Oh, and guard your belongings, watch your backs, and lock up your women; we pirates have no quelms about taking anything that is not nailed down.
