Johnson" <owner-atl-players@tango.rahul.net> To: atl-players@tango.rahul.net Subject: Atlantis: bug report Reply-to: owner-atl-players@tango.rahul.net I issued: DECLARE DEFAULT friendly which resulted in the following: Errors during turn: DECLARE: Non-existent faction. The syntax I used came straight from the rules, and I received no errata concerning this. So, I think it must be a bug. Concerning under-supply of items (high elves, say): The rules say "If the demand for the item (from all units in the region) is greater than the number available, the available items will be split amongst the buyers in proportion to the amount each buyer attempted to buy." This raises some interesting possibilities. Say there are, oh, 251 high elves available in a particular region at $60 apiece. Suppose I want to buy eight. To maximize the number I actually get, can I issue the following orders? FORM 1 CLAIM 80 BUY 1000000 HEL END What would happen if I did that? (I sorta wish I'd thought to try that in turn 1 - I only got three elves.) Frankly, if that works, I'd call it "exploiting a bug", which is expressly prohibited in the player instructions from Geoff. :) Even if the amount you attempt to buy is reduced to the amount actually available, I think this is a problem. I think purchase of goods (and exploitation of resources) worked better in Olympia (FWIW). << Brent --Boundary-8208140-0-0-- ---------------------------------------------------------- From owner-atl-players@tango.rahul.net Tue Jan 24 15:46:01 1995 Return-Path: <owner-atl-players@tango.rahul.net> Received: from tango.rahul.net by microplex.com (4.1/SMI-4.1/920826) id AA03101; Tue, 24 Jan 95 15:46:01 PST Received: by tango.rahul.net id AA00498 (5.67b8/IDA-1.5 for real-atl-players); Tue, 24 Jan 1995 15:21:33 -0800 Received: from shrike.cle.ab.com by tango.rahul.net with SMTP id AA00489 (5.67b8/IDA-1.5 for <atl-players@tango.rahul.net>); Tue, 24 Jan 1995 15:21:28 -0800 Received: (from brj@localhost) by shrike.cle.ab.com (8.6.9/8.6.5.9) id SAA18506 for atl-players@tango.rahul.net; Tue, 24 Jan 1995 18:21:19 -0500 Date: Tue, 24 Jan 1995 18:21:19 -0500 From: "Brent R. No, I don't suppose either system is clearly preferable, but that's not quite how Olympia works. In Olympia, you can only recruit one man per day. So in this case, no player that got fewer elves than he wanted would have gotten more than one elf more than any other player that got fewer elves than he wanted (er, something like that). << Brent ---------------------------------------------------------- From owner-atl-players@tango.rahul.net Tue Jan 24 15:48:47 1995 Return-Path: <owner-atl-players@tango.rahul.net> Received: from tango.rahul.net by microplex.com (4.1/SMI-4.1/920826) id AA03119; Tue, 24 Jan 95 15:48:47 PST Received: by tango.rahul.net id AA01382 (5.67b8/IDA-1.5 for real-atl-players); Tue, 24 Jan 1995 15:34:35 -0800 Received: from think2.lakeheadu.ca by tango.rahul.net with SMTP id AA01374 (5.67b8/IDA-1.5 for <atl-players@tango.rahul.net>); Tue, 24 Jan 1995 15:34:27 -0800 Received: from flash.lakeheadu.ca by THINK2.LakeheadU.Ca with PMDF#10551; Tue, 24 Jan 1995 17:28 EDT Received: from by flash.LakeheadU.Ca (4.1/SMI-3.0DEV3) id AB06678; Tue, 24 Jan 95 17:29:02 EST Received: from ICE/MAILQUEUE by ice.LakeheadU.Ca (Mercury 1.11); Tue, 24 Jan 95 17:28:49 EDT Received: from MAILQUEUE by ICE (Mercury 1.11); Tue, 24 Jan 95 17:28:20 EDT Date: Tue, 24 Jan 1995 17:28:13 EDT From: Daniel White <DPWHITE@ice.LakeheadU.Ca> Subject: Re: Atlantis: bug report To: atl-players@tango.rahul.net Reply-To: dpwhite@ice.LakeheadU.Ca Message-Id: <1279C283E8A@ice.LakeheadU.Ca> X-Envelope-To: atl-players@tango.rahul.net Priority: normal X-Mailer: PMail v3.0 (R1a) [snip] > FORM 1 > CLAIM 80 > BUY 1000000 HEL > END [snip] > Frankly, if that works, I'd call it "exploiting > a bug", which is expressly prohibited in the > player instructions from Geoff. :) I'd agree with that - however, when you have claimed 4700 silver into your new unit, and attempt to "BUY 78 HEL", that's not exploiting any kind of bug... ;-) (78 HEL) * ($60 per) = $4640 - mind you all that cash is unlikely to get used... I imagine each person got aroundabout 40% of what they were after... (I'd guess a demand of about 400 HEL went out that turn...) I imagine that if you got no High elves, it was because 40% of your order for 1 or 2 was not enough to warrant you getting one... :-/ Daniel. -=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-. | Name: Daniel White | | Email: dpwhite@ICE.LakeheadU.ca | '-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+=-' ---------------------------------------------------------- From owner-atl-players@tango.rahul.net Tue Jan 24 16:17:54 1995 Return-Path: <owner-atl-players@tango.rahul.net> Received: from tango.rahul.net by microplex.com (4.1/SMI-4.1/920826) id AA03299; Tue, 24 Jan 95 16:17:54 PST Received: by tango.rahul.net id AA10422 (5.67b8/IDA-1.5 for real-atl-players); Tue, 24 Jan 1995 09:29:02 -0800 Received: from think2.lakeheadu.ca by tango.rahul.net with SMTP id AA10418 (5.67b8/IDA-1.5 for <atl-players@tango.rahul.net>); Tue, 24 Jan 1995 09:28:59 -0800 Received: from flash.lakeheadu.ca by THINK2.LakeheadU.Ca with PMDF#10551; Tue, 24 Jan 1995 12:27 EDT Received: from ice.LakeheadU.Ca by flash.LakeheadU.Ca (4.1/SMI-3.0DEV3) id AA23615; Tue, 24 Jan 95 12:28:21 EST Received: from ICE/MAILQUEUE by ice.LakeheadU.Ca (Mercury 1.11); Tue, 24 Jan 95 12:28:07 EDT Received: from MAILQUEUE by ICE (Mercury 1.11); Tue, 24 Jan 95 12:28:03 EDT Date: Tue, 24 Jan 1995 12:27:56 EDT From: Daniel White <DPWHITE@ice.LakeheadU.Ca> Subject: Re: Atlantis; forming, buying and movement To: atl-players@tango.rahul.net Reply-To: dpwhite@ice.LakeheadU.Ca Message-Id: <1229AC55F86@ice.LakeheadU.Ca> X-Envelope-To: atl-players@tango.rahul.net Priority: normal X-Mailer: PMail v3.0 (R1a) ---------------------------------------------------------- From owner-atl-players@tango.rahul.net Tue Jan 24 16:21:04 1995 Return-Path: <owner-atl-players@tango.rahul.net> Received: from tango.rahul.net by microplex.com (4.1/SMI-4.1/920826) id AA03322; Tue, 24 Jan 95 16:21:04 PST Received: by tango.rahul.net id AA02197 (5.67b8/IDA-1.5 for real-atl-players); Tue, 24 Jan 1995 15:50:09 -0800 Received: from minerva.cis.yale.edu by tango.rahul.net with SMTP id AA02192 (5.67b8/IDA-1.5 for <atl-players@tango.rahul.net>); Tue, 24 Jan 1995 15:50:05 -0800 Received: from [130.132.111.106] (je-college-node.net.yale.edu) by minerva.cis.yale.edu with SMTP id AA24973 (5.67a/IDA-1.5 for <atl-players@tango.rahul.net>); Tue, 24 Jan 1995 18:50:00 -0500 Message-Id: <v0151010fab4b40d9e8a5@[130.132.111.106]> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Tue, 24 Jan 1995 18:50:04 -0500 To: atl-players@tango.rahul.net From: mosherj@minerva.cis.yale.edu (Joshua Mosher) Subject: Re: Atlantis: bug report At 1:51 PM 1/24/95, GDUNBAR.US.ORACLE.COM wrote: >In Olympia, the units higher up in the report get to BUY first. >So, in this case, the players who joined first would have gotten >to BUY as many men as they wanted, and those below would have >gotten nothing. > >Both behaviors are logical, but I don't think either is clearly >preferrable. > >Geoff Someone suggested earlier, as part of a proposal for inter-player markets, that there be a bidding system. How about implementing that as an alternative? What I have in mind is a system whereby the highest bidder gets his order filled first (instead of the _largest_ bidder). If there are too many sellers, then the lowest price wins. This would be very flexible and useful as well as fairer than the present system. If someone _really_ wants a horse he can pay twice the retail price listed in the city report. At the very least, please create some better way of buying and selling between players. It would greatly improve the present trade system. You want to download Atl-Rules.Doc For those of you without ftp access I will try to mail you one when I can, but it will not be rsn [our new recruit/daughter is 6 days old today]. If this player group is inhabited by non speakers of english slang, as it just occurred to me it was rsn=real soon now. If people want a dumbed down version [ie earlier versions of MS Word and/or Word Perfect] I may be able to accommodate - a show of hands please along with your format choice. No guarantees about the integrety of the table of contents, but the rules case indexing should hold regardless. I do not have those other programs, but I believe that I can save to them - I will [gasp] read the manual to verify this. On the subject of mail overload - if the number of self-advertising and pure roleplaying posts to this list does not drop radically, many of us will have to drop off. They do not bother me in their content, just the volume. << Brent ---------------------------------------------------------- From owner-atl-players@tango.rahul.net Tue Jan 24 20:54:25 1995 Return-Path: <owner-atl-players@tango.rahul.net> Received: from tango.rahul.net by microplex.com (4.1/SMI-4.1/920826) id AA04640; Tue, 24 Jan 95 20:54:25 PST Received: by tango.rahul.net id AA21125 (5.67b8/IDA-1.5 for real-atl-players); Tue, 24 Jan 1995 12:40:31 -0800 Received: from keymaster.us.oracle.com by tango.rahul.net with SMTP id AA20923 (5.67b8/IDA-1.5 for <atl-players@tango.rahul.net>); Tue, 24 Jan 1995 12:37:56 -0800 Received: from prodpyr2.us.oracle.com by keymaster.us.oracle.com with SMTP (8.6.7/37.7) id MAA09023; Tue, 24 Jan 1995 12:36:35 -0800 Received: by prodpyr2.us.oracle.com (Oracle 1.12/37.7) id AA04239; Tue, 24 Jan 95 12:28:16 PST Message-Id: <9501242028.AA04239@prodpyr2.us.oracle.com> Date: Tue, 24 Jan 95 12:28:16 PST From: "GDUNBAR.US.ORACLE.COM" <GDUNBAR@us.oracle.com> To: atl-players@tango.rahul.net Subject: Re: Atlantis; forming, buying and movement X-Orcl-Application: In-Reply-To: UNX03.US.ORACLE.COM:owner-atl-players@tango.rahul.net's message of 24-Jan-95 10:15 X-Orcl-Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary=Boundary-8206018-0-0 --Boundary-8206018-0-0 > On another note, I had units which were created but no-one was > available for purchase for the unit.
