The various "thing" lists or the actual BSE List? The "thing" lists I use either Programmer's File Editor (if I'm using a DOS/Windows box) or pico (if I'm using a UNIX box). For the mailing lists I used to use Majordomo, but have just switched over to ListProc. It also happens that, among other things, I market long distance telephone services part time for a company called ACMI, so when Richard W. Chiang was talking about long distance rates and said: >>PS. Anyone know of a better deal. I thought I'd do a little comparison, so I called both Sprint and MCI, and here's what I found out. First MCI: under their "New Friends and Family" program they have an "average" (their rates are what are called "banded" -- distance sensitive i.e. the farther you call the more you're charged, but to make it easier for us common folk to understand <g>, they state an "average" rate) daytime (8am to 5pm) of $.26, an evening (5pm to 11pm) average of $.165, and a night (11pm to 8am) average of $.135. In addition, you get 25% off of calls to non-MCI customers and 50% off of calls to MCI customers. There is no monthly fee for this. This breaks down to: Stated rate non-MCI customers MCI customers -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- 8am to 5pm $.26 $.195 $.13 5pm to 11pm $.165 $.124 $.082 11pm to 8am $.135 $.101 $.067 Next Sprint: Sprint makes it easy to compare because they have a flat rate for wherever you call (all of the rates in this message are interstate, btw). Sprint just has two time periods. No monthly fee. 7am to 7pm $.22 7pm to 7am $.10 Finally, ACMI. ACMI is what's known as a reseller. We buy blocks of minutes from major networks (we're using Sprint right now) at wholesale prices and resell at a discount. We have two different plans utilizing the Sprint network, a day plan and a night plan. The day plan is for those who make most of their calls during standard business hours, and the night plan is for those who like to take advantage of lower evening and weekend rates. The day plan has a $5 monthly fee covering all lines and the night plan has a $3 monthly fee. Also, we bill in 6 second increments, which effectively makes our rates approximately 15% lower than stated. Both Sprint and MCI bill in full minute increments, btw. ACMI night plan Stated rate Effective rate -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- 7am to 7pm $.18 $.153 7pm to 7am (& weekends $.12 $.102 & holidays) ACMI day plan Stated rate Effective rate -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- all day every day $.165 $.14 I provided this information in response to Richard's question for those interested in seeing the rates in this industry, and was not meant to be an advertisement, so to speak, for ACMI, as we mainly target businesses (although we do sign up residential accounts).
