I have no animosity towards you...and whether you wish it or not, will be lenient to you based on your past deeds. Much Honor: Lord Den of Earth P.S. I would suggest a career move, but I know you will not heed such sage advice. I wish you well in your endeavors. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Feb 1995 17:41:45 CST From: steve668@dallas.relay.ucm.org To: BSE-L@consensus.com Subject: Money Message-ID: <9502041741.S28575391@dallas.relay.ucm.org> Richard, Yes, it's true that the Holoids were settlers in the Periph., just like the Mirrarf (another research race), but the tech was specific to IND Holoid, not to the affiliation. The tech was developed at IND Holoid after many years of research there, and was lost shortly after being developed when a RIP raiding force captured and looted the colony. All techs developed by the colony were destroyed by the Holoids (standing order) before the RIP captured it. Most of the teleporters existing then were captured by the RIP, but over the years almost every one has been destroyed. The IMP had already bought several before the RIP attack, and so these still exist. For the tech to be re-discovered, one of the teleporters will have to be reverse engineered. There are a number of things like this whose tech no loger exists. The WSP have 50 Sensor Pods I sold them, another of these lost tech items, that have little or no purpose in the game. You'll find "Trophies" scattered thru the game. This remnant of the HDN, no longer has a tech since the HDN were deleted by the GM's. A lot can be done with what you suggest, but some things are just not realistic nor any game justification for the tech to magically reappear. S. I do not like the idea of game rewards as you specified. Your reward is what you get out of the game as a character. BSE does not have victory conditions. Well, maybe it does, but they shift around and change alot so different people think they have "won" at different times throughout our 12+ year history. In your scenario of finding and convincing an alien race to meet at 'x' location once a year...the reward is that you found 'em and it's your choice to exploit 'em. One is due nothing else for such a discovery except what one can find out and use to one's advantage. Rewards you get from BSE, not from RTG. Inner Empire fleets buying raw materials and finished goods for cash stellars is a good idea, and maybe RTG will bring back this event. The technology levels of the Inner Empire and the Capellan Periphery are very similar, as I envision it. We have pretty much what they have in the way of items. A Holoid teleporter is not a gift, it is an artifact. They should be available only to those that find them, buy them, borrow them or steal them. Such "neat items" are obtained as they always have been obtained, not as a prize in some sort of lottery. Your comment that the powerful would buy a lot of tickets is unrealistic. The powerful would see to it that such "neat items" never came anywhere near the general population, but would hoard and use the items themselves. BSE should never be a level playing field for us. It's not a horizontal environment, it's a vertical one, dotted with footholds, little ledges and tiny places for your fingers. You don't walk casually across it, you climb it laboriously, carefully, all the time wanting nothing more than to get higher up where the ledges spread out into comfortable caves. You get out what you put in - nothing more. No special rules for newbies. No special rules for the rich. No special rules at all. We cannot look to RTG to resolve every little quirk or problem. That is what spelled ABM's doom. The GMs are not active participants, they just shuffle paper, our paper so to speak. The only way to keep the GMs from getting involved and thus interferring with the game is to not invite them in the first place by expecting them to resolve every little descrepancy. There is always going to be someone with more things, or better things, ad infinitum. That's not unfair, that's life. RTG is not the new boss, same as the old boss. There is, I believe, a wholly different attitude and philosophy with them. Their position is pretty much, "Hey you got a problem, fix it yourself." All within reason. If you want a Holoid teleporter or any other "neat item" then you get it the old fashioned way. :) Richard, your proposals are *not* bad proposals, please understand. I just think that the players should not expect quick fixes to problems, by looking to the GMs to create a mechanism for that fix. Too much dependence on the GMs is why ABM no longer runs this game.
