[PBEM News] Oresteia Weyr From: shiolar@uk2-dot-net.no-spam.invalid (Oresteia) Date: Sat, 07 Oct 2006 16:34:58 +0000 Humans colonised Pern several thousand years ago, knowledge which has since become lost to those living on the planet today, along with the majority of their technology. In these days, nobody knows that Kitty Ping first engineered the first dragons from firelizards, and nobody knows the true source of Thread; all they know now is that every two hundred Turns, when the Red Star passes by Pern, Thread begins to fall and it is only the dragons that can protect them. In this timeline, AIVAS was never discovered, none of the technology was reclaimed and the path of the Red Star through the heavens was not altered. Thread continues to fall. Pern was colonised not only by humans, however; several other races have left their claim on the planet. Some of them simply colonised it with ships of their own, while other races use Pern as a penal colony, leaving their undesirables on the planet instead of building prisons on their own worlds. There are sporadic groups of refugees looking for escape from war, or fugitives seeking to hide from the law. Suffice to say, the culture of Pern is wide and varied these days, with several species all co-existing peacefully, or not so peacefully in some cases. ~~~~~ It all began two hundred Turns ago, at the end of the eighteenth Pass, when the most southerly reaches of the Southern Continent were colonised from the overcrowded Norhtern Continent. There were already several Weyrs covering the more tropical regions of the Southern Continent, but beyond those areas was a much more temperate zone, where Klytaem Hold was established, with Klytaem Weyr overlooking it. Things went very well there for a very long time, until a time twenty-five Turns ago. The Lord Holder to Klytaem looked out on his lands and decided that it was time to expand; he didn't have the lush pastures of the more tropical Holds north of him, and he resented that. Slowly, he began to take over the other Holds on the Southern Continent, and before too long he had forged an alliance with the corrupt Klytaem Weyr. For the first time in all the history of Pern, dragon fought dragon as the other southern Weyrs were absorbed by Klytaem. The Weyrs and Holds that had helped to establish Klytaem Weyr and Hold found themselves under attack, metaphorically stabbed in the back by those they had assisted in the past. The Northern Continent, more densely populated and significantly stronger, remained safe from the advances of Klytaem Hold and Weyr, and they abandoned the south, forbidding all those of the North to even visit the South. So when a group of dragonriders from Klytaem Weyr chose to rebel against their leadership, accompanied by men and women from Klytaem Hold, they had no support from the North. They began to fight, helping victims of the Weyr and Hold's dominion to escape, channeling supplies to other resistance groups and engaging in other subterfuge. However, three Turns ago they were discovered and attacked. They had no choice but to flee even further south. In the icy mountains, they constructed their new home, safe in the knowledge that the bitterly cold climate would protect them. Oresteia Weyr was founded there, alongside Oresteia Hold and a few small Crafthalls. Life was hard there, but they persevered, preparing for the coming nineteenth Pass and continuing to oppose Klytaem's regime. By the North, they were considered renegades and rebels, only marginally better than Klytaem itself. They became a Weyr for disillusioned riders, dragons, Holders and Crafters from the North, a free place they could join without becoming victim to Klytaem's ruthlessness. This brings us to the present day, a few months into the beginning of the nineteenth Pass. The Weyr is underpopulated, but as it has only one Hold to protect, it is not too much of a problem, at least for now. Oresteia Weyr's duties are twofold; firstly, they must protect their lands from the ravages of Thread, and secondly they must find a way to deal with Klytaem Weyr once and for all. Once the Weyr is out of the way, it should be possible to put a stop to Klytaem Hold, but one thing is very clear: they have a long road ahead of them. ~~~~~ Oresteia Weyr is a Play-By-Post roleplay loosely based on the Dragonriders of Pern series, with a different and unique plotline that we hope will be interesting. We're fairly relaxed and easy-going, with character development and individual plots more than encouraged. Since we're fairly new, there's also plenty of room for any ideas and suggestions new players might have; we're looking to make Oresteia a place that everyone involved can be proud of. Pretty much all characters are welcome, although we're not currently looking for any more goldriders. We do have a clutch on the Sands (conveniently stolen from Klytaem Weyr), so Candidates are, as always, more than welcome.
