Atlantis 2.0: Times 6 From: Geoff Dunbar <atlantis@rahul.net> Date: Mon, 06 Mar 1995 07:09:45 +0000 Atlantis 2.0 Times July, Year 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Game Master Notes: atlantis@rahul.net for information, problems, or to play. Bug Fixes This Turn: 1) Combined units now round skill days up instead of down. 2) You can now give things to other faction's units even if you can't see the unit (assuming your attitudes are correct). 3) Fixed bug where FORGET might not allow a unit to learn any skills at all. 4) Fixed related bug where non-leaders might be able to learn more than one skill. 5) A bug with pillaged regions has been fixed. There is at least one region with negative wages right now; you'll just have to avoid working there for now. 6) News of the weather for _next_ month should be on the reports now, as well as of the previous month's weather. Additions This Turn: 1) I have added a 'submissions' area on the ftp site. The first file to be put in this area is 'enq126.zip', the Atlantis Enquirer mapping program, for Windows. (I haven't tried it, so I don't know whether it will work or not). Any other submissions are welcome; just mail them to me. 2) There are 6 new spells; every magician should have at least one research area now. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Melvin huddled in his blanket. "Throw some more wood on that sorry excuse for a fire!" he ordered the elven maiden who was cleaning his headquarters. The young elf complied without a second glance. In fact, she somehow made it look as if it had been her own idea. "Blasted elves," Melvin grumbled, for about the fifth time that day. At least the elfmaid had, indeed, turned out just as pretty as Melvin had suspected, once Abercrombe had converted her to a belief in biweekly bathing. As if Melvin's thought had summoned him, Abercrombe suddenly stood in the room. Melvin was tempted to ignore him a little longer, to teach him a lesson about sneaking around, but curiosity won out. "What have you got?" he asked. "Our long range scout has discovered a new town," Abercrombe replied. "But he fears for his life -- he has seen a number of armed men frequenting the woods near his location." "Blast! Well, perhaps they will let him pass. If not, I lose a single scout -- and they gain a dangerous enemy." Melvin's eyes seemed to burn, almost to glow. "They would do well to let him pass," he finished in a whisper. will regret it.- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ TEAMSTER WAGONS ARE ROLLING! Do not make a tragic mistake. Personal property of transgressors will not be returned. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Funny show was performed by The Dragon Legions last month in Glomera (45,6). First pillaging near Stinchar! Members of other factions only enviously observed skills of 50 nomads. But experts said although the soldiers looked dangerously they behaved sleepy and without fantasy. Only a monk belonging to Saint Foufeau church was disappointed. "A civilized gentleman would only kill men and rape women", he said. "A God will punish you". "As if Stinchar hasn`t got enough plains to last us all a lifetime." replied Legate Raelin. "I`m sick and tired of them." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Boudiccea arrived, but she knew at once that Komarken City is not the place she wished to settle down. Yes there was much use of her healing forces (much trouble and much fighting all around) but she couldn't get the herbs she needed. So, she decided to go on the road again. Perhaps in the South there it might be warmer and perhaps there she would find those special herbs and - perhaps - a mage willing to teach her real magic. And so she left town as the sun fades in the west, riding alone in the prairie. Yipiyaheh. Poor lonesome cowgirl. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE UNRELIABLE SOURCE Atlantic City (AP) - The Unreliable Source has acquired secret Assassin's Guild membership lists. At great personal risk, the following factions are known to be "hidden" members of the guild: `Aitches 'for the Eyes (72), TheFryersGuild (76), Dragon Legions (93), Faction (111), The Maurarhiannons (113), The Black Company (124), Hand of Darkness (127), StormWatch (143), Skulking Vermin (163), Arkadia (191), The Welcoming Hand (192), Rognuldr and the Knights of Ni (216), and Tomsk's Wombles (258). Lord Viper (217), head of the Assassin's Guild, has refused to comment on the list, other than to say "You are a dead man, a walking corpse." More information will follow. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ >From the Chronicles of the Black Company: Snow. Thats all it ever does. This unatrual winter continues, I've asked every inhabitant of this region yet none can tell me when winter will end. Strange they that have lived their entire lives here and still don't know. It is almost as if the Gods themselves forgot to put this information in the great book of rules.v2. No matter when winter ends I will record it here and it will never be forgotten. Even if the entire world should stop and start over again. Now why would I think that? The captain has stopped his brooding and sat down to study _The Art of War_ by Sun Tzu. The other day he said to me quoting from the book. "War is a matter of vital importance to the state; a matter of life or death, the road either to survival or to ruin. Hence, it is imperative that it be studied thoroughly." Well, I suppose thats true, but my personal motto is, "Kick'em in the nads and run like hell." I'd better get back to my studies, looks like I'll be putting them to the test soon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ATLANTIS CITY (AP) - The Center for Atlantis Population Research, a conservative think tank based in Atlantis city, released its long awaited report on the long term impact of the sudden appearance and growth of the many factions now populating Atlantis. In a written press release, the group claims that, "although the next year will see many advances in technology, magic, and understanding of our world, we will see all out warfare around the six gate cities within the next twelve months unless preventative measures are taken quickly." The report goes on to suggest two measures to avert the predicted wars. "First, we need diplomatic efforts to diffuse the already growing tensions around the gate cities. Second, we need to relocate the termini of the gates leaving Atlantis City to unpopulated regions, to avoid increasing tensions in the already overpopulated gate cities." The report concludes with the group's long range predictions. "If nothing is done to avert the wars for the six gate cities, Atlantis will eventually be controlled by six powerful empires, which will shut out access to any new factions which try to leave Atlantis City. Although this may seem like a stable, desirable situation, much blood will be spilled in the approach to this equilibrium." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This message in two parts: Part 1: Orrebygd must be one of the quietest regions in Atlantis. A little stealing, deserts and swamps. That's it. But lo! Is that a forest we see? This faction would like to claim the forest in (6,14). Please send us your objections. <g8512580@mcmaster.ca> Soon, the hand of darkness shall find a home. Part 2: Do not completely believe the Fryer's Guild Economics on production and study. While interesting, the economics lacks two fundamental features of Atlantis which must be considered. These are teaching and demand. First, teaching. A more efficient systemis as follows: Create two groups. The first group has several men which studies one month, then immediately begins production. The second group has one man which only studies. When group 2 reaches second level, he then teaches group one which saves one months study. This will eventually lead to a larger production level within the 12 month period stated by the Fryer's guild. The optimum ratio of men in group 1 to group 2 is important. Second, demand. Who is crazy enough to wait until month 7 to get a product? If you are manufacturing swords for taxing or fighting, you do not want to wait this long. This is a return on investment thing. Anyway, I do thank the Fryer's guild for giving the basics and look forward to his battle summary. Ruse Renard Hand of Darkness Faction 127 <g8512580@mcmaster.ca> ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Komarken Tribune Vol 1, Issue 7 ================================================================ Factioncide in Komarken Area ---------------------------- The wholesale slaughter of factions in and around Komarken has reached a new high as whole factions are being destroyed. Weaker factions have started congregating in the city proper, praying that the guards will protect them from the ravages of the previously unreported alliance that has been quietly eliminating other factions' units. This reporter has been able to determine the alliance's name to be The Creeping Death. Plague Reported in Komarken --------------------------- The packed bodies and congestion in Komarken has touched off a virulent plague that is in the process of killing off units that the the Creeping Death alliance cannot reach. Mayor Assasinated ----------------- The continued troubles of the Komarken area prompted the populous to cast out the old mayor in a most permanent fashion. The only identifiable remains were the office signet ring and belt buckle. The city guard has stepped in the restore order until a new mayor can be appointed. The number of voluntary candidates is very limited at present. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMBAT IN ATLANTIS II Combat in Atlantis 2.0 is somewhat different from version 1.1. The most obvious difference when receiving a combat report is that the casualties for each side of the battle are grouped together and not itemized for each unit that took losses. This might be confusing because it will look like only one unit on each side was hurt. For example: Total Casualties: Victims (958) loses 11. ABSTAIN (622) loses 0. Many other units participated in this battle, but they are not listed. In fact, unit 1199 only had five high elves. The other six casualties were from other units. Losses to individual units must be inferred from the remainder of the turn's report. In Atlantis 1.1, the losing side will break as soon as half of the troops are killed, even in the middle of a combat round. In version 2.0, the losing side will not break until the end of the combat round. This can result in more casualties occurring and makes it easier for one side to be wiped out. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Karamon, looking flustered, upset and just downright trodden upon, screams at his men, "FORGET IT, WE LEAVE FOR SLEDMERE -NOW-!" Reining in his horse, he gallops away, leaving a trail of Meek Men humbly following behind. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Ethereal Circus will is interested in any information pertaining to lost religions of Atlantis. We have recently discovered some old manuscripts describing certain religious rites and wish to explore the possiblity that some of these cults are still being practiced. There may be a new wave of religion about to sweep across the continent as refugess flee from pillaged lands and seek solace in the old truths. When you go out on a long series of travels and explorations, what should you never leave home without? No, it's not the Atlantean Express(TM) card. A Map! All travelers should have as accurate a map as possible. Well, here at the Cartographer's Consortium, we're endeavoring to put together such a map. But, we can only do it with your help. So, we're asking you to send in a copy of the reports from areas you have recently explored. In return, you'll get the up-to-date compilation of all Consortium entries. We're over 20-plus contributing members strong, as of when this ad was placed (Saturday, 3/4/95). We currently have mapping data on 173 areas, with economic data on perhaps half of them. The CCC is now cooperating with the services of the Platinum Map. If you like the Platinum Map, you might like the additional service of the CCC, which adds a complied gazeteer of many of the regions mapped by the Platinum Mapping project. Write for info now. The CCC can currently be reached at "tim.hruby@his.com". Please include the prefix "CCC:" in your subject line. P.S., Sorry for the constant repetition (I've received a complaint), but the ad gets responses from new players every turn. You can remove all faction specific information, but do not alter those lines you decide to send. Errors: there has already been mapping errors, due to altered location information. The Platinum Platoon does not take any responsibility for such errors. If you tell us, that there is an error in our map, we try to fix it, but as always, we don't promise anything. And to ensure best quality contributions, we highly encourage you to use above Perl script (scissors) for cutting your turnreports. EMail address for The Platinum Platoon is <jippo@clinet.fi> and if your mail contains mapping info, please add text "the platinum map" somewhere in your mail. Jonathan MacLair ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ************************ * The Viper's Venom #4 * ************************ BLUES, BLUES, BLUES ++++++++++++++++++++ You will hopefully be displeased to see that the Viper is back! Despite the whole world forgetting that it was my birthday, having flu, and accidentally deleting all my Information on the rich realm of atlantis, I am Back! Lore did my column last week, and for that I owe him thanks. However he erred in trusting the mighty Horus with issuing orders to our ranks. Horus forgot to say who the orders were from. This was an easy mistake, I'll warrant, but after such a long wait and discovering that 20 is the next best thing to old age, it was the final straw. SOMEONE'S IN TROUBLE NOW! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Who is it, I hear you ask? It is the Unreliable source in the Times. Last month, aside from intefering with the operations of the Assassins Guild, the Unreliable Source linked my name with Faction 217. It is true that, if you look at the faction list (in the temple next to the Geofronomicon-ex-Atlantum), you will see that Faction 217 (The Teeny Weeny Training Company) shares the same postal address as myself. However, this is merely a convenience, and I stress that the TWTC has no connections to the Assassins guild - it would be bad for their already poor business. I NEED YOUR HELP!!! ++++++++++++++++++++ I am offering 50 silver to the person who tells me what faction the Unreliable Source is. I'll keep your name a secret. There are several groups out there who bear a grudge against the US (!) - It has exposed thieves and alliances, and drawn undue attention to those who can draw their own undue attention without help! Everyone else moans about the unreliable source. I have just put it at joint first place (along with Leif Skallywhacker and Dana Scully's Bra) in my list of people who are GOING TO DIE IF I GET THE CHANCE. ON A PERSONAL NOTE... ++++++++++++++++++++++ Mr, Azzoom, Myself, Lore and Horus will be around on Thursday. Get some more yak's spleens in, along with a sideplate of Elves for Horus. Make sure Doris is on... Tomsk, the INCREDIBLY high Womble, Thank you for your glowing description of my dedication to Evil. Hopefully, SkallyWhacker will get the message soon... ============================================================================= People who are lucky to still be alive :- - Leif Skalwykker, who will be converted to the Dark Side... - The Unreliable Source, for slander above and beyond the Call of Nature. - Dana Scully's Bra. Jammy Git. ============================================================================= ------------------------------------------------------------------------ These stupid elves, I told them to take the money with them to buy food not to blow it all an a "goodbye party". They starved to death and didn't even send a report back. This month it will be different. The is a spell to research (AT LONG LAST). Perhaps we can find out what it does...enchant? enchant what? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo o O O ORC ENTERTAINMENT o o ---------------------- O O A social chronicle o o O OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo Abernethy is a city of ORCS ! Those orcs visibly ask for entertainment. Did you ever see what entertainment is for these creatures ? That's HORRIBLE. Orcs don't joke, they choke. Orcs don't laugh, they grin and mock. Orcs don't make puns with words, they make fun with swords. We the Jokomicalaughunny Buffoons, solemnly ask our fellow humour-traders to boycott that awful city. No entertainment for the wicked ! Let everyone publish the name of those for who indulge in orc humouring for their business ! Shame on them ! Let's grin and mock them ! Let's choke them ! - Acrobatty the Rigolo (229) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The shadowy figure reined in the horse and gazed forward. There would be no more progress this month. Stretching as far as the eye could see was ocean. The horse was hardly winded, but it would take the rest of the month to backtrack and select a new direction to explore. This failure was recorded on the map. Where to head next? The rider's attention was drawn North. Death stalked the land to the north. Months ago someone had killed a traveller near Komarken. Scores of people have died in the retribution. The rider had left just before the attacks started, but death was spreading and it only needs to catch up once. "South, we will head South." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ A WORLD OF NEWS. It`s really hard to believe (again). I have never seen a fastest way of move information and news. In Atlantis World, the information is not a problem: you know everything before it happens. Well, perhaps the Crystalballs News Network (CNN) sponsored and controlled by the misterious Wizard Consortium were the responsible. Now a days, almost every leader has a network-conected crystallball in their home (or in their wagon-house). The Wizard Consortium did it well. Most people don`t know what they are paying for the service. They don`t have to pay any money the price is High. Everybody with a crystallball near him/her, is sending a small part of their psychic energy to the Consortium. To be continued... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Aidan stood in the middle of the street, gazing upwards at the sign while a small black cat affectionately rubbed against his shins. Aidan's lips moved as he read: NOR'WEST COLLEGE DO YOU WANT TO BE A SOMEBODY? Be all that you can be! Expand your mind! Enroll now in the finest educational facility located within the confines of Atlantis City! Our knowledgable instructors will provide you with the basics for survival in this harsh and strange land. As recent statistics have shown, an unskilled labourer can earn only 15 silver per month. A person can't survive on such wages. Yet, if you enroll in Nor'West College, you can more than earn your way in this world. With us, you can learn valuable trade skills such as hunting, carpentry, herb lore, armorer and weaponsmith. All of these subjects for the low tuition fee of only 5 silver per student. Our instructors can also teach you how to be more observant and how to hide yourself from the eyes of enemies. Of course, since these instructors are currently hiding from the City Guards, the tuition is 25 silver. But still a bargain! For course offerings and registration information, mail our Registrar at <john.petherick@lakeheadu..ca>. NOR'WEST COLLEGE An independent educational institution (Affiliated with the Nor'west Company) Aidan kicked the cat aside and pondered aloud, "That might be just what I need. Should I register?" A mighty viking heard this and stopped in the street. "Did I hear you correctly? Are you thinking about Nor'West College?" Aidan responded, "Yes, I am. Do you know anything about it?". Aidan scowled downwards at the cat which was rubbing against his legs again. The viking boomed "Of course, I do! I, Gunnar Olafson, was a miserable piece of refuse before I studied there! Now look at me!". Gunnar flexed his mighty biceps. "I am now a skilled weaponsmith, ready to make fine swords and bows. Look out world, here I come!" Gunnar paused and inquired, "Hmmm, isn't that cat a little bit too affectionate?" Aidan again attempted to persuade the cat to leave. "Well, what you say sounds interesting. I was thinking more of a military life. You know, swinging a sword, maybe even becoming an officer." Gunnar suppressed an unseemly giggle as he watched Aidan try to pry the cat from his foot. "My aunt Hildegard's poodle used to do that. I finally had to spread rotten fish paste on my boots to drive it away. On the military thing, I've heard that Nor'West Military School for Wayward Youth is now accepting day students. Supposedly, you can study combat and tactics for the same price, 5 silver, as regular courses at Nor'West College." Aidan now stood on one leg as he tried to shake the cat off his foot. "I'll certainly consider that. Thank you, Gunnar. And I'll try the fish paste thing, too." Gunnar smirked, "This is a cat, you night have to try something else. If all else fails, I've heard that there's a violin maker here in town who wants to make some bows." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Scowling, Pilot Pete elbowed his way through the surging throng of elves that stood between him and the southernmost of the of the six great Gates of Atlantis City. It never used to be this crowded, he thought. Only seven months ago you could walk from one edge of town to the other at high noon and see hardly a soul. Then without warning, the "help wanted" signs went up. Now you couldn't show your face outside without getting scooped up by an aggressive foreigner and marched off to war halfway round the world. Pete counted himself fortunate not to have seen any battles yet, but his new employer stuck him as an edgy, restless type. The peace couldn't last. Reaching the southern gate at last, Pete shaded his eyes and scanned the horizon for the fluttering colors--a flag bearing the cryptic emblem "CCXXXI"--of his new allies. Nothing. Well, that's the last gate, he thought. They're nowhere to be found. Just like his allies to disappear on him. Pete started trudging back to the north gate to resume his search. "Oh, CCXXXI, where can you be?" he worried aloud. To be continued . . .? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dissidents in Atlantis City! Dateline: sometime A lone figure was seen roaming the streets of Atlantis City all month long, ranting about another month wasted because nobody understood his orders, or so it was believed, because most eyewitnesses weren't exactly sure what he was talking about. No many passersby paid much attention because this has been a common occurence in recent months, and one more dissatisfied citizen doesn't make much difference. All that is sure is that the citizen who formerly claimed to be the "Vengence of Atlantis" now only answers to a name having something to do with a vacuum of some sort. "Speaking of perfect places, I hear that KOMARKEN is getting less and less crowded now that the local populace is taking charge and chasing varlets and ruffians out of the area. Bravo! "Well I'd best be moving along, rumor has it there's been some kind of major discovery in STINCHAR just South of here. A disc, a sphere, a tore, or something else even stranger ? As a rumour stated it in the previous Times issue, we now have the begining of an answer : OUR WORLD IS (AT LEAST) CYLINDRICAL FROM EAST TO WEST The corresponding law for the "west to east" case, should be obtained very soon... And we are working hard to get the information concerning the south-north law. However, we also have an estimation of the circumference of our cylinder-world : it has been estimated to 96 standard distance units (1) Next time, our brillant researchers will provide you a few hypothesis to answer the question : "Why 96 !!?" (1) The 'standard distance units' has been defined by Dr Olibrius in his astounding reference essay : "The matter is not Where I'm going, but How far it is !" ********************************************************** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Meek <Singalong> Howdie's SPECIAL OFFER!!! This is a lonely place to be in, the only contact the small window, and meger communication via a tap code learned by myself and a few other prisoners similiarly trapped. At least some contact with others, but only by the tap code. Despair and frustration all around me! But wait, I have heard a rumor through this same code. A rumor about some magic I can invoke. Magic I can call up using special sequences to request a release from this bane place and escape to another realm. This magic spell will release me from the lonely place I am currently in. I can escape my confines, release my shakles, roam free in a new world! But, to learn this new spell was hard. I was in luck though, I could seek help from a god, a new god. One that would respond to the spell I was going to try to create with finger movements over the tap code board. I will give this a try, I had nothing to lose, there is only success if you try to go for it. I am going to do it. Escape at last, at last! Success! I received an answer, an actual anwser to my release request. The spell works! I have found myself transported to a new realm. The magical realm of Atlantis. Whatever urge had possessed him to bring nearly fifty improperly trained plainsmen on a mountain climing expedition? "Five lashes," Desmorandus hissed in a voice of deadly seriousness. The offending plainsmen held very still for a moment, and positioned the next piton very carefully indeed. Desmorandus knew his way around a flogger. Life in Komarken could do that to you. Luckily, they were approaching the mountaintop. Once there, Desmorandus suspected the rival Vikings would be in for a bit of a surprise. For all the plainsman's poor mountaineering, they were coming along fairly well in the brawling skills. Once the Viking infestation was wiped out, the entire Komarken region would be pretty well consolidated. And with any luck at all, he would be back at the Pavilion within the week. Desmorandus gave a tight smile as he expertly cinched a belay line. He would have to give Hogli a report, he supposed, on how the "skills training expedition" had gone. And be sure to clean the blood off the clothing, though Hogli probably wouldn't notice the subtle red-on-red color differences. For a supposed brilliant magician from another dimension, Hogli was remarkably lacking in awareness, Desmorandus mused. Perhaps having one's nose constantly buried in a dusty book had that effect. Still, he was impressed with Hogli's natural sense of how and where to deploy scouts and collect information. Had it not been for the message from the mountain archer, Desmorandus would never have known of the Viking threat, and been able to arrange this little surprise. Perhaps Hogli could be useful after all, especially if any of this much-vaunted magic had any real use. Desmorandus had yet to see any practical demonstration. The last of the tired plainsmen crawled over the ledge. Desmorandus wasted no time; climbing equipment was repacked, the clubs and poles were distributed (when would those d*mned sword-forges be set up?) and the group crept up on the Viking encampment. Desmorandus, unlike his arcane Master, was an expert at the art of the practical demonstration. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Karak paced back and forth. When will they arrive? His patience was running thin. He had had little time to study the arcane arts of magic. Something always seemed to interrupt him. His presence was always required somewhere. When would it stop? First, he had to oversee the training of the guard. Next, he had to negociate keeping his new-found guard at home. It seems there was some evil threat to his allies that needed to be addressed. He barely avoided having to send troops. Next came meetings to discuss the new discoveries. What should we do about them? That wasn't the worst, however. Every time he managed to get some time to study, he could never get the supplies he needed. "I'm sorry sir, we are out of that". "Come back next week, and maybe I'll have some in". "I've never heard of that". Of course, the one time he could find the supplies he needed for his studies, he couldn't find any money. "I'm sorry sir, the tax collection is behind schedule". "WWHHAAATTT?!". "You see sir, we made a little mistake, and discovered we did not have enough money to train more soldiers AND fund your studies, so..." "Guard!!!" There was some satisfaction on seeing the limp body swinging from a tree. There was a great deal more satisfaction as to how quickly the faction shifted focus to Karak's magic studies. His studies now came first, before food, if necessary. There was plenty of money for his studies. Now if he could only get those supplies... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ After hours studying the old tomes of magic Sargon was sure how to cast this spell succesfully. The orcs should make short work of those three." He points to the two high elves and a tribesman who had just passed the Free Companions "No Trespassing" sign. The mining crew sat on the edge of the hill and watch the several scores of orcs totally ravage the intruders. It was over quickly. T'lan, with a bit of disappontment that it was over so quickly, joins his crew back down in the mine. "Maybe next time we'll see a bit more blood once we get these swords finished." On that note, a subtle smile comes across the foreman's face as he gets back to work. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ As the sun sets, you scan your most recent issue of the Atlantis Times. Mostly the same old thing. People out for world domination, total anarchy, trade, or whatever such nonsense. As you read through the paper, a small notebook sheet falls out. Upon it is written: Black Rose: The Awakening Dawn is come Arisen, awoken The darken sun Prophesying words yet unspoken. Coursing through me Searing my petals Unfolding my essence, that which i be Cutting it, deadly as sharpen metals. For, where will I go? Who shall I become? I am just a seedling unto a mighty oak Of parts far less than their sum. Whatever come i must be aware Out of my dreams, and know my fears Put away all my cares Or my own Apocalypse may soon be here. Have you put away your own hopes, dreams, and fears? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ REPENT! THE END OF THE WORLD IS NIGH! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Legate thinks. (Damn, that`s hard.) Legate Rayelin sat down heavily. "Should I open the letters, Sir?" Was this success? No more shouting at hopeless recruits but instead having to read thousands upon thousands of fan mail. Worn to the bone he picked up another one to read. Incredible how people reacted, just because he had taken the cohort on exercises. "Michael, this one`s a bomb. Throw it outside." "Yes, sir." His squire took it and threw it outside the tent. A moment later a loud whoomp sounded. Bits of the sentry splattered on the outside of the tent. "Here`s an interesting one, Michael." "Yes, Sir?" "Someone wants us to make rules for pillaging." "Rules, Sir?" "Send this to the senate, we`ll have to file this for further reference, should we ever be in the mood to pillage again." "Yes, sir." "By the way, add one rule first." "Yes?" "Rule number one: Remind soldiers not to rape stony ground." The memories of the injuries his unit had suffered still gave him nightmares. "Yes, sir." "Here`s another good one, someone is trying to form an alliance against pillagers. That`s good, commendable initiative. Remind me to send in an application to join." "Yes, sir. Shouldn`t you ask the senate first, sir." "That`s right, damn. That`s the problem with republics." "Ah, here. An application to join the Republic of Rome. Send that to the senate too." Rayelin leant back in the chair. So much reaction to one small pillage. Okay, they had burnt a few women, but so what. At least the reactions were positive as well as negative. Funny how the staid people of Stinchar hollered rape while those of Monzon and Komarken seemed to take it all in stride. Well, if it was war, then they would be found ready. Only a few months back, he had chastised the war mongering parties of the Senate, and here he was almost precipitating one. Life could be funny. War or Peace? Oh well, time would tell. -- Geoff Dunbar <atlantis@rahul.net> Up
