There is still one bug for me to fix, others to be discovered, and I need to add explicit checking on spell names, item names, etc etc. Once it's complete I'll release the code, but for now you can use it if you like by mailing me with the subject "turncheck" and placing the orders in the body just like you send them to the game itself. It'll convert your orders into a semi-readable English format, point out any syntax errors (if you mispell the name of a text field it won't catch it yet), and mail you a reply within seconds of my receving it. Good luck. ---------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 26 Feb 1995 10:21:39 +0500 From: roy@acasun.eckerd.edu (Jonathan Roy) Subject: Re: Turn Checker - What is the status of the turn checker that was being worked on. Perhaps this discussion belongs on the design list, but I'm not a member of that one, so here it goes: This change eliminates one of the main advantages of training non-leader units in combat, instead of some other skill, for generic and war trade factions. If I can give my herbalists the ability to tax, in addition to an effective combat skill of 2, just by buying them swords, then why shouldn't all of my units be herbalists? Or lumberjacks? Or construction workers? This goes double for weaponsmiths, who can make their own swords. Sure, combat-trained units would be _better_ in a fight, but they now lack any other raison d'etre, at least for some faction types. You would be welcome, though possibly the Alliance that I`m a member of might have something to say about this. Just to let you know that I`m not the only War Faction around Stinchar that would react rather violently to any moves against us. Not a threat, just telling plain facts. > Goal: protect our income, kill out pillagers etc. Come off it. I purposely pillaged a land on the edge of our continent, so don`t tell me that it was an important business centre. As if Stinchar hasn`t got enough plains to last us all a lifetime. (I`m sick and tired of them.) Anyway, since you obviously are there, what were the results of the pillage? (How much damage did it cause, etc. I for one, would like to know.) > David > Great Muuf and his family (117) Legate Rayelin, Former Centurion of the Gray Dragons. ---------------------------------------------------------- From: "Matthew S. Taylor" <matthew@clark.net> Subject: Atl2-Pillaging Date: Tue, 28 Feb 1995 12:44:20 -0500 (EST) Greetings all, The recent comments about pillageing does make me want to know just what the effects are? I know you get a fair amount of cash out of it, but what does it do to the area? I really do not want to have to pillage something just out of curiosity, and certainly not my own territory! So, inquiring minds want to know! Interesting side note that may be news to some of you. Last turn I TAXED with a unit and to save money did not order them to continue to study combat for one turn. Because they had no other month long order they WORKED, raised still more cash but lowered the tax base. Since when does working LOWER the tax base of an area? -- Matthew Taylor matthew@clark.net ---------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 1 Mar 1995 10:19:07 +0100 From: David Maxera <maxera@fzu.cz> Subject: Re: Atl2-Pillaging > The recent comments about pillageing does make me want to > know just what the effects are? I have obtained more such questions, so: This is from my June report !Glomera (45,6), plain, 760 peasants (nomads), $0. !------------------------------------------------------------ ! Wages: $9. ! Wanted: none. ! For Sale: 76 nomads at $64, 15 leaders at $128. ! Entertainment available: $0. ! Products: 20 horses. And this from May report: !Glomera (45,6), plain, 776 peasants (nomads), $4656. !------------------------------------------------------------ ! Wages: $16. ! Wanted: none. ! For Sale: 77 nomads at $64, 15 leaders at $128. ! Entertainment available: $232. ! Products: 20 horses. One can conclude: In the short run pillaging is very good strategy - one can earn four times more money per character then by taxing. On the other hand, one have to move every turn to some new territory. From it follows that alliance with economy based on pillaging will be very strong and aggresive. So, once there is an pillaging alliance one has three possibilites: pillage also, form wide alliance which can four times outnumber the pillagers, or leave very far. This is the reason of my founding The Pillagers. Great Muuf and his family (117) Up
