A dog's wet nose is not strictly speaking the worst of the bunch, but it has its own peculiar dreadfulness which conniseurs of the ghastly and dog owners everywhere have come to know and dread. It's like having a small piece of defrosting liver pressed lovingly against you. Targ-Arun awakens to a new, beutiful day. If I need to change or add something, I edit the file and send it again. The append option would be of no special benefit to me, and might make more work for Geoff. Side note: when I prepare my turns, I find it convenient to read a copy of my most recent report into my editor. I then insert the orders for each unit underneath the listing for that unit. That way, I never forget a unit, and I have all other important information right in front of me. When I'm done, I delete all the extraneous stuff. As far as I know, there is right now only roy's turncheck-via-email service, the software hasn't been released yet. If I am wrong, just prove me correct, anyone? :) - sending so far 3rd turn to roy's checker ; it works. :) --- Destiny's Champion, Fate's fool, Eternity's Soldier, Time's Tool. -The Chronicle of the Black Sword ---------------------------------------------------------- From: "D.J. John Bollinger ---------------------------------------------------------- Subject: [Atl2 - Design] Tax/Pillage Date: Wed, 08 Mar 1995 18:41:25 -0800 From: Anson Winsor <apwinsor@span.CS.UNLV.EDU> TIM WRITES in reply to my tax by force It is true enough that taxes are only collected by force. However, it is equally true that any faction is capable of using force. Nothing prevents a Trade or Magic faction from hiring armed men, not to mention the potentially far more effective means of persuasion Magi can bring to bear. It is only a rule that prevents them from using force to collect taxes. Similarly, nothing (in the real world) prevents a War faction from learning productive or magical skills, except the rule that prevents them from using them. This issue is not one of realism, but rather one of game design (and maybe balance). The faction limits are designed to promote, even require, inter-player cooperation, and alliances of complementary faction types. If pilliaging alone were the only advantage of a War faction, War factions would be few and far between. Indeed, the only War factions would be those players who choose to roleplay as bandits, as Trade factions would have no incentive to share and co-develop land with them, given that they raze all the good productive land. Just MO, but the sentiment has been stated by others before on this list, so I'm not alone. Tim -- tim.hruby@his.com -------- While I was saying only force takes our taxes, I was not saying that it required a war faction. Since we have war factions in thie game, I meant that this faction would be logical to do the taxing, not any other faction. War factions should n be allowed to build or do magic if we think of them as the arm that bears arms. They are the force behind the actions, like the trade does building, producing, and trade in general. I like the idea of required cooperation to get ahead in the game. This makes it more interesting to me. But can you find others to ally with that you can trust. Even if you were to know them personally, in game terms, this won't and shouldn't make any difference on whether they will turn on you. It only makes it more interesting. I don't wamt trade or magic to be able to tax. A Political faction would be ideal to tax, but they would still require force to back their tax efforts. Besides, all things turn out to be political anyway I don't think I could stand a pure political faction anyway. The Platinum Map published by Tim Hruby shows a Lair [1] in Stinchar. I have OBS 1 in this hex and cannot see this. Do lairs and shafts often require high OBS to detect? I was hoping that this Lair might be a secret passage to anywhere a good distance from this exit city. Do such 'teleporters' exist? In the same vein of putting distance between myself and the swelling hordes around Stinchar, can somebody confirm a rumor that extensive amounts of useful terrain (ie non-plain, ack) lay just beyond 51,7? It appears taht the faction claiming 51,5-7 in the Times last month has something to hide. I have heard that he his blocking entrance to non-coalition forces in 51,6 but not 51,5. If you have the 1.6 CCC map handy, this looks mighty suspicious.
