Anybody remember The Habitat Project? From: rhdlamb@ix.netcom.com (Robert Lamb) Date: Sun, 26 Mar 1995 01:13:01 +0000 Does anybody remember something called The Habitat Project? It was an attempt, about 10 years ago, to create a graphical, on-line virtual game world where the pc's you created actually lived. While you were online you could issue real-time orders to explore and interact with other pc's, intelligent npc's and the environment. And your little animated pc's would run around the screen doing whatever they were ordered to do. The unique thing was that after you logged off, your pc's would continue running around the world executing a basic set of instructions and interacting with the other pc's & npc's based on personality stats that you had set up for them. They actually "lived" and did things in this fantasy world apart from your periodic visits. All this was attempted during the time when AI was hot and people were investigating Automatons. Due to the limitations of the technology (C-64) and scope of the project the commercial version never really went anywhere, I think Sierra On-line got involved for awhile but it eventually died. I'm just curious because one of the things I'd like to see more of in PBEMs is interaction with intelligent npc's, beyond just 'attack'. If anybody can recommend a game that has significant npc interaction let me know. -- =---------------------------------------------------------------------= = Robert Lamb / Lamb Publishing New: The Internet Pocket Lexicon = = rhdlamb@ix.netcom.com Your How, What & Where Net Guide = =---------------------------------------------------------------------= = http://www.vpm.com/lambpubl/lex.htm = =---------------------------------------------------------------------= Referenced By Up
