Kerry ------------------------------ From: ccharnle@m-net148.arbornet.org (Chip Charnley) Date: Mon, 27 Mar 95 21:21 WET Subject: Re: BSE: Change of Address I still am a sysop on the PBMGAMes forum. The following statement that Wayne pans as an obvious lie is not; "I asked what about PBMGames where BSE shows up in Rm 2. This idiot claims that CompuServe has to pay something called PBMGames, Inc. to post messages, etc. to that forum. We all know that this is crap!" It does not probably make good sense but it is also not far from the truth. What most people fail to realize is that *ALL* the FORUMS on CIS are run by companies OTHER than CIS. Now exactly how the arrangement is put together, I don't know BUT, somewhere along the line, CIS pays the forum 'owners' for the traffic that their forums generate on CIS's network. An anology (sort of) is that CIS operates a huge shopping mall and each of the forums represents one of the stores in the MALL. All the store carry the same type of items. They only vary in content. CIS collects a toll from every person on their way out based on how long they have been in the mall since any given person can only carry the XX in/out of the mall in a given time period. CIS must then pay each shop keeper for the portion of the time that the consumer was in his shop. In addition, the shop keeper must pay CIS a set flat fee to occupy his shop each month. The above is my best estimate of how things work and should NOT be taken as gospel but people must remember that CIS does NOT run the Forums. Independent contractors or other corporations do. Most of the Microsoft forums are run by Microsoft obviously. The games forums are run by various independents although most of them are run by Nightshift Sysop although it sounds as if she has incorporated various small companies to represent the various forums. As to how CIS gets it's Internet feed, I have no idea. It sounds like they are not a primary internet provider while AOL is. If this is true, then they do have to pay AOL for their message traffic. Considering that size of their own network, I would think that they might be better served becoming a backbone provider since their costs should be cheaper but I don't know that much about the major backbone providers and how they interconnect.
