I thought of a couple more reasons.  There isn't much discussion of
small closed-end games, period.  Mostly that's because there isn't all
that much to say about them.  If you had some new strategic idea, you'd
try it out, you wouldn't generally post about it.  What more is there to
say?

The games that seem to generate a lot of traffic are: (1) games that are
large and heavily diplomatic, and (2) games with lots of hidden
information.  So, for better or worse, there's a lot of MIDDLE EARTH
traffic, but a lot of it is of the form, "What's the answer to this
riddle?"  Such hidden information generates communication between
players, although of course people disagree on whether it makes a good
game.  (ME also generates more discussion because of its team nature,
which puts it more in the diplomatic category, even though it is
closed-ended.)

There are quite a few popular closed-end strategy games which *are*
playable by email, and they don't really generate much more discussion
than WC does.  I still think their PC bias doesn't help, though.
