The web page now has (all?) the first level spells and then some... Thanx to people sending things in, we have nearly every skill listed up to level 4! I have been asked to post the list of skills to this list with a lot of blank space and a warning at the top. Some people might not want to read it as it could spoil the suspense of studying new skills. I'll do just that (on Friday). Thankyou all again friends! Jon. This idea comes from the Monzon Wood Exchange's offer of a monthly dividend in exchange for cash investment. If there were enough factions or alliances willing to go public and distribute shares, this could be organized into an exchange. A market would open a niche for brokerages and investors. It would allow factions to invest more widely, and be less suseptable to any catastrophic event (i.e. a localized war) It would allow newbie factions to put their money to work while they are figuring what to do. It would allow alliances to raise cash. My open questions are: Are there alliances interested in distributing shares? Are there factions willing to set up exchanges? Is there (will there ever be) the degree of trust necessary to factions to buy shares? Here is a quick review for the finance-deficient (myself included): In finance, a stock represents a share in the ownership of an incorporated company. In industrial societies wealth used in production is owned in the aggregate mostly by CORPORATIONS rather than by individuals because of the huge investments required. This trend began in 17th-century England when merchants formed JOINT-STOCK COMPANIES, pooling capital to be used jointly in trading and manufacturing. Participants then received dividends, shares of the common PROFIT proportionate to their original investments. The wealth of individuals includes claims against, or investments in, corporations. These are called securities, the two most common being BONDS and stocks. Corporate bonds are evidences of corporate debt to the bondholder. Stocks are evidences of ownership, or equity (see EQUITY, finance). Investors buy stock in the hope that it will yield income from dividends and appreciate, or grow, in value. Shares of widely held companies are traded on STOCK MARKETS. Stockholding is popular because it represents an ownership of captial that can be transferred easily by means of organized trading in the stock markets. There are two classes of stock: preferred and common. Owners of preferred stock are entitled to a fixed or predetermined dividend before any common stock dividends can be paid. If profits are too low in any given period to cover all or part of a preferred dividend, the unpaid amount may be accumulated as a claim against future earnings. Preferred stock also has first claim if a company is liquidated and the proceeds divided among its shareholders. Common stock carries with it all claims to a company's assets and earnings that have not been assigned to preferred stock or to corporate debt. Once preferred stock dividends have been met, any remaining profits are available for distribution to the common stock shareholders. Because there is no limit on the amount of dividends a common stock may receive, its market value tends to reflect assumptions made by investors as a group about the company's ability to increase earnings and thus pay higher dividends in the future. Although common stock offers less security of income and generally lower current yields, the chance of common stock increasing in market value is far greater than preferred stock. Each owner of a corporation's common (and sometimes its preferred) stock is entitled to vote, on the basis of one vote per share held, for the company's directors, who in turn appoint its day-to-day management. If enough stockholders are dissatisfied with a company's performance, they can vote in a new management. {would this be possible in the game? -jb} ---------------------------------------------------------- From: "William Cairns (5325)" <G77008@it3.eskom.co.za> Date: Thu, 11 May 1995 12:40:30 GMT+2 Subject: the altantis enquirer program is enq2.zip not enq126.zip TRY ftpmailing a file with the wrong name. The only difference is that A) there is no oversight and B) investors can't sell shares to each other or to third parties without the "corporations" assent and active participation. A more complete stock market would be an impressive organizational effort. An alternative is a bank. You could model your services very effectively on your local bank (offer savings and checking accounts, C.Ds, etc.). You have to pay about 8% interest monthly to compete with just straight workers in many areas. This could be managed by one trusted faction. A futures market would be very useful in many localities. If you anticipate having 12 wood in three months, you sell an contract for "12 June Wood". You deliver the 12 wood to the person who buys the contract, in June. This could be superior to simple mail transactions because A) deals are structured, well-understood, and (partially) public; B) information about who is selling what could be centralized. Of course there is the issue of guarantees and penalties. These should be agreed upon by all parties before any market opens, whatever they may be. Monzon Wood Exchange (289) thayer@sangamon.edu -- "When we look at the world, we see various arts offered as items for sale. Men think of themselves as commodities for sale. There is a trend for men to invent various tools and to sell those rather than their faculties. This thinking is like separating the seed from a flower and valuing the seed less than the flower." -- Miyamoto Musashi ---------------------------------------------------------- From: "cyril.bouanna" <bouanna@eurolang.fr> Date: Thu, 11 May 1995 10:37:00 +0200 Subject: Elves, dwarves & Capitalism > From: jbaclask@adnetsol.com (Jeff Baclaski) > Subject: Local Stock Exchanges > > [...] monthly dividend [...] cash investment. > [...] > ... market ... niche ... investors.
