ATLANTISv2 atl-players-digest #70 From: csd@microplex.com (Christian Daudt) Date: Wed, 24 May 1995 00:00:00 +0000 I thought I was going to get thousands of responses asking me to keep this digest (maybe I just wanted to massage my ego ;-)) But I received enough responses, so I'll keep the digest going. ---------------------------------------------------------- From: "J.P. I've just pulled a few stings and had the hard disk space for my Atlantis page doubled, so keep those submissions coming! New spells and skills will be going on today. I'll try to get the hypertext adaptation of Rob's newbie help on-line just after my exams (two weeks ish). My Atlantis page changed directory recently, owing to the influx of submissions. I accidentally posted the old address to the times. There is a temporary link that doesn't work too well for now... Please accept my apologies and use Atlantis WWW : http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/users/u3jph/Atlantis/index.html which will be it's permanent home from now on... Jon. The moving unit is probably the one that is exploring as they go, carrying all their possessions, taking their time, etc. The advancing unit has one goal in mind - attacking the enemy - and is carrying only what is absolutely necessary. There is quite a difference between wartime combat maneuvers and peacetime repositioning. From Geoff's description of how the code works, it sounds like there is an even chance which command is executed first. This sounds good to me, as it could happen either way in "real" life as well. Moving units might be delayed by a number of factors, allowing advancing units to catch them, or the other way around, allowing moving units to escape unharmed. I like the way it works. Comments? Mike -------------------------------------- Date: 5/22/95 4:35 PM From: jhigham@k12.oit.umass.edu <cut> I disagree here. They might be trying to catch guarding units by surprise, but there are two problems. First, a unit that is Moving, is not guarding, and probably is just stepping out of the hex as teh others are comign in. Also, like the original poster suggested, a unit that is advancing is probably doing it in a more orderly fashion, and making sure that they don't miss anything by rushing by. If they are attempting surprise this is even more true because they must do it secretly, and not be noticed. In Atlantis terms, the one unit is moving out as the first on is moving in, and I don't see how you can have battle with a unit that is fleeing. ---------------------------------------------------------- From: "J.P. My mailer got its knickers in a twist again... I can fully vouch that Tiny is not a thief! I have been using his services as a mage and he holds to his word honestly. I have an OBS 4 Leader watching Atlantis City, and although there are several active thieves in Atlantis City, Tiny is not one of them. Come to think of it, the police department has never to my knowledge had on its list anyone who has successfully stolen anything in Atlantis city. Maybe they are the thieves? Anyhow, support Tiny if you can, guys - he's no thief! Jon. I wish to find allies there. I currently have a scout and a growing group of workers. It is Winter. Only Horse mounted troops will get anywhere. I wish to Coordinate scouting the surrounding lands with you other players. I wish to set up trade, probably producing Crossbows, in the surrounding area. I am not into violence, and will not personally kill anyone. It is a waste of resources. I am not suggesting some great allience - but a (short term?!?) co-operation of limited resources to get us all going. If you want to cooperate or just to tell me you are un-co-operative, send me a mail... I've been playing for a while now, so can probably advise struggling new factions in the area. ALSO ===== I can get things from atlantis city to Spakker. My men there will buy it and send a pleb with the goods to Spakker. I will charge an extra 50% to non-allies, cost to allies. regards, Jon. Someone said recently that there is a copy of the times posted to a newsgroup.I'm not too hot on this area, but I believe there are some email addresses to which you send a request for a newsgroup, and they post it to you. Can someonepost an address to this list? You should get the times posted to you with your turn report. I always have. It is sometimes a day later than the report, depending on the state of chaos inthe universe. All other atlantis information such as rules etc can be found on anonymous FTPat ftp.rahul.net Does anyone know if rob can get an emailed FTP service like the news one above? Any addresses to the list or to me can be put on my web page too... Geoff - how about having an addition to the orders such as INCLUDE RULES INCLUDE TIMES 12 INCLUDE PLAYERLIST This would cause a separate posting of the document requested... I don't know how hard this would be to code, but it might be a good idea... Jon. Perhaps the method of having the password on each orders is also good. I know that anyone that actually sees the copy of my report, will also be one to send it in case I am unable for a while. Also, the method to change the reports destignation is good, because when I am gone for two weeks (coming up) it will help an ally to send it for me. An automatic resending of reports will help considerably. I know of some allies that have had their system down recently, they have trouble getting onto the system for 3-5 days at a time. The system even has refused to get their email and forward it. The new pound commands are great, but I really like the automatic response that my current orders sent in, was received. This makes it easier to know that an errored orders was indeed corrected by a more recent orders that has new errors.
