I'm not mad about this, now I know I just have to plan for >>this in the future. Whoops .. cat's out of the bag! I had been keeping some extra thrust engines / jump engines in cargo for "xfer" moves, and when the engine section was totally taken out, the ship did NOT become derelict because .. we still had engines and thrusters. Bad news: during the battle we were immobilized once the active thrusters / jump engines were destroyed. Lots of missile hits from that point. Good news: After the battle, we transferred in the surviving engines from main, and went on our wounded way. Merchant captains take note .. this is an EXCELLENT and low cost protection to take against going derelict, and as indicated above, it is already giving the pirate scum something else to think about in the days ahead. And can you not come up with a better insult than that? And as for the comment about the sheep, the only SMS I ever heard accused of abusing a sheep was Powell Horny -- and he be a RIPer on the run these days. My sentiments exactly! The RIP trap was strong on strategy, weak on tactics. The ships were extremely well placed given that they knew my previous trade route from past siteings, and anticipated I would feel safe in Drell space. Good strategy. However when the sirens went off, I was able to give 3 orders before all hell broke loose, which in retrospect should qualify me for Lt. strips (and perhaps an "I fought the RIP in a merchant ship" Combat Button). 1. Who the hell are those guys? Full scan on the ship to the left. EGADS .. they're RIP!!! But we've scanned into the Captain's safe .. we know the real owner!! Now let's try to survive long enough to report it. 2. Head toward the little guy with the least firepower. Wait .. he's RUNNING AWAY!!! (The Corvette fled at the approach of the Blue Whale .. he probably figured he'd get injured when our entire engine section blew). Hmm .. so did I actually .. a near thing. 3. EVADE EVADE EVADE!! Lot's of damage, including some kind of beam which destroyed all lifeforms in the Engine and Cargo sections (where there weren't any to begin with). Us guys up in Control were somewhat taken aback at this .. were they expecting to kill Scotty in the engine room? >>Can you believe the nerve of some beings? Attacking an *unarmed* merchant >>vessel in it's own space....Some people! Well .. the entire QSN / FGZ war (of which I appear to be the first casualty belonging to either of the 2 contenders) was started when the FGZ did just that .. so the style at least is recognizable. Total incidents in QSN/FGZ war to date (as I understand it): 1. AFT ship defending SMS stargate blown up by WCE force 2. Unarmed QSN merchant ship piloted by well-known merchantperson, damaged by RIP. How much longer can this senseless slaughter go on?? Sincerely, Nicholas Van Rijn QSN Blue Whale MerchantPerson (now with combat experience) ------------------------------ From: ronk@triassic-142.Eng.Sun.COM (Ron Kleinman) Date: Mon, 22 May 1995 13:59:28 -0700 Subject: Re: BSE: RIP Attack >>"Once again, superior QSN ship design wins out." >> >>I think I will let that one stand...<giggle> From recent personal experience .. it helps to have LOTS of hulls. Potential Cargo Master purchasers please note that a smaller trade ship would not have survived this particular attack. The superior QSN ship design was to research and build BIG ships and to allocate hulls effectively between the 3 sections. Also .. the seat belts helped too. Sit in a stalled darkened tradeship some time, thick with the stink of fear coming from crewpersons around you who are depending upon you to save their skins, sweating out the endless pauses between rounds of incoming missiles, realizing that the last round blew out some main hulls in a section where you've got plenty to spare, and if the fools make the same mistake again, you actually might have a chance to come through it alive .. I'd call it combat experience, although not quite the type that I'd prefer to have had. As you well knew, the Blue Whale owned no harpoons of her own. Of course .. if you actually DIDN'T get away from that attack zone as fast as you claimed, my guess is you will soon wind up agreeing with me as to what constitutes combat experience. Perhaps (in the unlikely case that you survive your turn as fish in a barrel) we can hold some sort of reunion afterward? Perhaps at the secret RIP base in the Drell system??
