FOodChain: GM -> Player Update From: marting@qpsx.oz.au (Martin Gregory) Date: Fri, 26 May 1995 00:00:00 +0000 A number of people have written to me about the recent rules change, commenting either (or both): 1) The small herbivores have been favoured too much, and we will have locust plagues again. 2) Their large species has been nuked by me changing the rules. First, I want to apologise again for changing the rules underneath you. It is not done without some agonising. However, it is a choice of messing some players up now if we change, or all of us as we go along if we don't change. I hope that the Jungle will now be more interesting than it was before. People with large body species can see if their species can weather the climate change, or can pick a different niche. Second, the climate change is _supposed_ to favour herbivores and smaller ones. These are the species that were being cyclically wiped out before the change. I'm hoping that the current surge in their numbers will then be followed by a surge in smaller carnivores, then a surge in larger ones etc... instead of a the cycling that we used to have. So if you feel that the small herbivores are going too berzerk at the moment, I hope you will be prepared to hang in and see if nature balances itself out this time given some time. The "25%" rule, and the "each animal only hunted once" rule, ensure that the plants will not all be eaten away. Finally, a lot of the comments I have received might warrant further discussion amongst the rest of the players. Would here be a good place for this? Look forward to your feedback!
