June 95 Galactic Inquirer From: dvistas@aol.com (D Vistas) Date: Tue, 30 May 1995 00:00:00 +0000 <<< INTERGALACTIC NEWSWIRE SERVICE >>> SUBJECT: The Galactic Inquirer, Volume 3, June 95 TO : All Cargomaster's Guild Members FROM : Edited by M.W. Martin, Megafalagon University, Sol (dvistas@aol.com) *** H E A D L I N E N E W S >>> Science And Nature Defeat Jiggobug Infestation by Elmer Rohin, Rasalhague Mammooth, May 08: For almost 7 months, the farms and agricultural communities of the entire planet have been fighting off a slow but ever-present infestation of their crops. Billions of tons of Sirian potatoes, beets and venu beans have had to be destroyed before export due to egg infestations of the ravaging Jiggobug. Scientists had been fighting the plague for several months, to no avail, as the normal pesticides used on such parasitic pests are destructive to many Sirian fruits and vegetables. "The little bastards are not native to Mammooth." said Dr. Everett C. Benari, Minister of Agricultural Affairs for the planet. "There are no natural predators here, so we had to import one million Deneban Weasels. It was a scientifically radical idea!" The Deneban Weasel is a voracious insectivore and, according to some quick and dirty research, shouldn't have any long-term negative effects on Mammoth's ecosystem. And sure enough, after only 3 months, most of the Jiggobugs have disappeared, allowing the farmers to reap in bumper crops of produce for market export. "Although there are some minor drawbacks, the future looks bright!" said Benari. Those drawbacks the doctor was speaking of include minor losses in livestock, the introduction of Deneban Rabies to Mammoth's rodent population, and the frequent disappearance of small pets such as vichinkas and ooloorp beasts. >>> ALF Invades Hamalian Tech Sector by Givon Y. Najib, Hamal Tendar, May 17: In an unprecedented show of moxie and gaul, the ALF launched a full-scale attack on the crucial technological sector of the planet. The forces included 2 stolen imperial heavy frigates, and over 20,000 Alien Liberation Front ground troops. The attack was a complete surprise to the desert world inhabitants, and they had no choice but to surrender unconditionally. This reporter was very lucky to be able to smuggle this transmission out of the planet, since all interstellar transmissions have been severed, except for a few channels left open for possible negotiations. According to local rumors, the leaders of this ALF cell want to call 5 Imperial Bureau Chiefs to open tribunals for crimes against "non-Terran sentients". History shows us that the empire refuses to negotiate with what it calls "pro-radical scumbag terrorists", and there doesn't seem to be any reason to think they will act otherwise. So far, there have only been a few dozen casualties, mostly civilians, since this crisis began, and the ALF soldiers have been very careful to keep everything under control. But there have been random sniper attacks and resistance is gaining strength. Sentiments are split among the indigenous population, so the possibility of civil war looms ever closer as Terrans and non-Terrans become uncertain about the political future. Currently, the empire has not made any public statement as to what it plans to do about the invasion, but many speculate that it is only a matter of time before an imperial invasion fleet arrives in orbit. ALF leaders have not blockaded the planet to date, but are expected to do so as a last resort defense tactic. >>> Ancient Ruins Bring Jobs, Construction by Carmine H. Ernesto, Atria Legume, May 23: The fantastic and ancient ruins of the Traal on Legume have long fascinated archaeologists and historians for many hundreds of years. But now, scientists warn that smugglers, pirates and teen-agers are destroying the pristine mountain wilderness of the planet. In response to public outcry, the planetary government voted to begin a preservation project to secure the wild lands and ruins for future generations. 17 huge geodesic force domes will enclose the entire historical park zone, allowing patrons to enjoy the ruins without spoiling their splendor. Admission will be 1,000 QPs per person to support the cost of the preserve. >>> Ask K'Yaryup by K'Yaryup Smith, Personal Advisor Dear K'Yaryup: I have this problem that I think you might be able to help me with. Well, it's not really a problem, per say, its more like a little inconvenience. In fact, it doesn't really even bother me, so much as it seems to bother my friends and associates. I consider anyone that I work with an associate, and since I work in a very large rubber glove factory on Spingle, I have a great deal of associates. Some of them are also my friends. There's Frieda and Helga. They work in the left thumbs department. And there's Monica in palms. But there are so many that I really can't list them all. In any case, all of these friends and associates of mine keep telling me that I talk to much. Well, they don't actually tell me to my face, but I've heard rumors. I'm not the gossipy type, so I don't usually pay attention to rumors, but last week, while I was on my lunch break, I had to use the little Piil's room. I hope I'm not being crude. Anyway, I went in there and to my shock and horror, there were several rude statements about me on the bathroom stall. It said that I go on and on an on and on and on and on about nothing important and that I was too self-absorbed. I don't think I'm that way. Do you? What's wrong with my friends? Why are they so jealous? I mean, I know I'm pretty and have a bubbly personality, but is that any reason for persecution? Please help! - Gladly Gabby, Spingle Dear Gladly Gabby: Please, be shutting the hell up. My stars, woman! Get a grip! You've not left me enough room in my column to be helping you at all. Look at this! I'm already rapidly running out of my allotted word count, and I had such good advice to be giving you. Advice that would have surely been helping you to be being the best being that you can be being. But, unfortunately, I'm all out of writing space and now you'll have to be going on being yourself for the rest of your life. Good luck! >>> Oganza's Sports Beat by Oganza Busasa, Macovia Well, it's me again. And this time, my editor has promised me a big raise and a promotion if I take over the new Sports Page. The fights at Pandemonium Circus have been going very well, and sponsors are raking in the dough. I've even gotten into the act, donning my Plastosword and hacking away at strangers from far-away places. What a blast! Anyway, this month there were three promotions in the fighter stables. Good job, boys! Just in case anybody wonders, The Drunken Bum is my stage name. Yep, that's me! I got some decent wins under my belt, and now I think it's time to move up to more dangerous combat tactics. In the meantime, I'll be reporting fight news and stories to all you sports fans out there in the galaxy. Wish me luck! W. Martin, Megafalagon University This section is devoted to player questions, concerns and rules of Smuggler's Run. Please feel free to send us your inquiries! Q: I had my agriculture cargo this turn get infested by bugs and become worthless. Has anyone ever had this happen to them before? - Lanto Cal-Rhesian, #150 A: Although it's not a common occurrence, cargoes can sometimes be rendered worthless by infestations of one kind or another. An untrustworthy cargo merchant might even switch your high-tech goods for some old, broken down rusty bolts. Swindling can work both ways! Q: I was wondering about snooped info. If you snoop for info on the end turn of the month, will the result apply to the following month, or will it be worthless? A: Snooped info is always most valuable in the current month. After the last turn of the month, everything can change due to the economic news released from Megafalagon University, so it's best to be careful with large financial transactions at that time! PUBLIC NOTICE: Be aware matess that carrying over 100,000qp's in cold hard cash iss not wise, even on a calm planet like Rogue!
