ATLANTISv2 atl-players-digest #79 From: csd@microplex.com (Christian Daudt) Date: Fri, 02 Jun 1995 00:00:00 +0000 I thought I was going to get thousands of responses asking me to keep this digest (maybe I just wanted to massage my ego ;-)) But I received enough responses, so I'll keep the digest going. ---------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 1 Jun 95 09:47:21 PDT From: "GDUNBAR.US.ORACLE.COM" <GDUNBAR@us.oracle.com> Subject: Re: Calling Atlantis Police --Boundary-10707918-0-0 It's true articles are not sorted by faction number. The are semi-sorted due to the way I've been doing things; however, in my opinion, they should be ordered so that you can't figure out a faction's number. So they will probably not even be semi-sorted sometime in the near future. It does seem logical to know the regions you pass through, as many people pointed out, including myself, but just assume that they (the units) are affected by the areas and are too exhausted to bother about what they went through to get where they were going. I know it's a silly supposition, but maybe a bit better than assuming they close their eyes as they travel from hex to hex. If enough people cry out the the Almighty One, he may add a bit (well probablya bit more than a bit) of code to do this, but in the meantime, just let it go! I think Geoff didn`t want anybody to be able to calculate who contributors are, since Times submissions ARE supposed to be able to be anonymous. Maybe he uses some kinky sort routine? I`m faction number 93, >and my articles are nearly always the last in the Times. Only articles from >Major Hatred are placed below mine. Times articles *are* sorted by faction numbers, but they are not sorted numerically. Effectively, each digit is compared separately, with blanks having the highest precedence, so that times articles appear in the following order: faction 1 " 10 11 ... 2 20 21 ... Thus, faction 97 (Mayor Hatred) always appears after faction 93 (Dragon Legion). Once faction numbers 930 and above make their appearance, they will follow the dragon legions articles in the times. A concern I have is that after finally getting a leader or mage to a very high level, it is still possible for someone to sneak in and assassinate them, without any real hassels. Now, I'm not against assassination, I'll probably make use of it myself. But any leader worth assassinating would also be worth a bit of protection by the side who owns him/her. Thus my suggestion is for a protect order. The units carrying out the protect order (hereafter called the guards) will have the job of protecting the other unit (normally a leader). The guards will not be able to do any month long activities (ie working, producing etc) but will automatically move with the leader if the leader moves. I propose the affect of the guards to be twofold. 1) In any assassination attempt, the guard unit is considered combined with the leader. The assassination would still occur, but the person assassinated would be randomly chosen. Thus the odds on assassinating the leader would be dependent on how many guards you had, but there would probably have to be some sort of limit on numbers. 2) In a battle situation, any melee (non-missile) attack on the leader, would have a certain probability of instead being conducted against his guards. The probability would depend on things such as the leader having a horse, the guards having horses, the leader being set behind the flag, etc. One thing I wouldn't like to this order to do would be to make assassinations impossible. Other things would also have to be sorted out, can the guards fight as effectively in combat, and the like, but that's what this discussion board is for.
