As I know Dean doesn't subscribe to SR let me explain ( I do get SR ).

NIC: The Next Generation seems to be an interesting experiment to try out
some new ideas in Legends. As I see it there are two principal new changes
from normal games. In a nutshell these are:

1) Factions don't work like they used to in this game. You cannot just join
   a faction, you must meet the factions pre-conditions. There are two
   grades of joining, leaders and members. Leaders have the most stringent
   requirements but members may only join a faction if sponsored by a
   leader. Requirements vary a lot but can put restrictions on race,
   religion, status and titles. The common requirement for leaders is that
   they must have at least 15 prestige.

A player becoming a leader of a faction is a public event. Everyone knows
   who you are. Some faction's victory conditions include capture of leaders
   of opposing factions.

There may be more than one leader in a faction. In the case of the
   Saurians a player can only become a new leader if he can defeat an
   existing leader. In another faction (Elves?), they must unanimously
   decide which of their leader's is to be Emperor to meet their victory
   conditions.

2) There are supposed to be tons of interesting quests for players to
   explore which are not faction focused. SR #13 lists about a dozen
   from rescuing the princess to a Thief's championship to being the first
   merchant to get a cargo of tradegoods from one place to another. I presume
   these yield titles and other goodies but the article wasn't specific.

It will also use the restrictions on troop training and public works that
are beginning to be common in new games.

From the article it looks to be quite an interesting variant.

Steve at Rhann Games (UK) in his latest newsletter (#28) says he plans to
run this game as NIC 3 and is looking for interested players. I intend to
try it out.
