Quest Digest 9/6/95 From: ">>-Josh->" <J.P.Gallagher@durham.ac.uk> Date: Fri, 09 Jun 1995 00:00:00 +0000 ____________________________________________________________________ | | | THE QUEST DIGEST | | The forum for the E-mailing Quest-players | | Compiled by Josh Gallagher: J.P.Gallagher@durham.ac.uk | | Date: 9th June 1995 | |____________________________________________________________________| o This is not an automatically generated compilation, so if all contributions could be sent to me in a seperate e-mail with paragraphs initialled, I would appreciate it a lot. o Please do not use this list for your own purposes; people do not appreciate thousands of pieces of mail arriving a day! o If you ever want taking off the list, just say, and I will be happy to do so. I don't want telling off for any nuisance mail! o All material here is the exclusive property of the author and may not be used elsewhere without their permission. JPG> Hi to all newbies to the list, and welcome to another Quest Digest for regulars. The Digest is obviously quieter now with people going home for summer and others in the middle of exams. The Digest should be continuing during the summer, and I'll let you know more when arrangements are sorted out. JPG> The advert for the Quest Helpline has been deleted for this issue, and I'm waiting for a new one from Chris Dickson or Bill Godfrey... Otherwise than that, on with the messages! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 04 Jun 1995 22:29:52 From: dynamic@dynamic.DIALix.oz.au (Peter Read) > >CC> Probably getting someone to explain what I said to him and why it was >insulting ;-) > Not quite. I am more interested in a rational discussion. I am not in the least bit interested in a slanging match with some female who has to have the last word, tell lies, ignores the truth, won't recognise a valid comment, can't communicate without abuse and uses foul language to prove she has bigger balls than all the blokes on the system. Regards Peter :-) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 5 Jun 1995 01:46:56 +0200 From: magnuz.aemp@medstroms.se (Magnus Cassersj\v) >AH> One thing I havent seen done is a game where it is a mixture of a wargame and a questy sort of game. You c MC> That sounds like Legends, Clans, A bleadian Diary/The Apoch (I hate Spellbinder Games!!!) or perhaps even Adventurer Kings. Try'em out... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 5 Jun 1995 13:26:28 +0100 (BST) From: "C.H.E.B." <ctc@coventry.ac.uk> > CC> Has anyone any idea why KJC have stopped answering all phone calls? CC> They've started again. Apparently my Tourists weren't inputted at all. I'd prefer that than have them sent to someone else. CC> For all that are (or indeed, not) interested, I will *definitely* be at the London meet on the 10th. It would be nice if there was more than one G7 or G8 player ... I think I've managed to pursuade at least two other players to go so come on you apathetic people - ATTEND! > PN> Whats wrong with Mr Baldor? My G14 group is attempting to be a Baldor > follower, I've got as far as -13 to Baldor so far. CC> Nothing - a guy I know in G7 has followed Baldor *religiously* (If you'll pardon the pun). Now he says that his group is weak - mainly due to being unable to do decent robberies because he didn't have Novala's spirit assisting him. Now I've got a group in a town which doesn't have Baldor quests, so it will probably get swung around to Garthrana. > PN> I wish I'd built my groups to role play from the beginning, like NB has, it CC> If you've got the strength to do that, fine. Personally, I'd rather have the armour, skills etc quickly. Then I can see my group taking on a path of righeousness after a wasting their time carousing and stealing. > AH> group to a tourney with something like a 10,000gp prize? To make it more > apealing put limits on spells so only self effecting or no-damage spells CC> I'd consider it. I think all of my groups capable of beating most groups. OK, I might lose a character against Black Void, but if these were outlawed, I'd bet them against anyone. > AH> Ok another question - is awaken cast automatically if ranked first or > only if someone has been put to sleep? CC> Only when someone is asleep, I would guess. After all, Destroy/Kill Undead don't kick in when fighting other groups. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Neil Benson <9365040@mull.sms.ed.ac.uk> Date: Mon, 5 Jun 1995 15:37:48 +0000 > BG> I'm waiting for this double page spread. I've got the newsletter > finished, apart from this. NB> I sent it to KJC with my turn aout two weeks ago. Nice to see that KJC are as efficient as usual, and always trying to help out the struggling newsletter editor! NB> While we are on the subject, I have cancelled my subscription to First Class. KJC have increased the price of the magazine, the price of game turns and yet frozen the payment for articles printed in First Class. Cathy said that the increased overhaeds in having the mag "professionally printed" meant they couldn't afford to pay more. And there was me thinking that the increased distribution of First Class was the reason it was being professionally printed and that this increased revenue had paid for the increase in overheads. I urge you all to cancel your subscriptions in protest! CC> Kevin, _please_ get rid of that printer. PLEASE. I will discuss that NB> Sorry, I vote that it stays. Looking at Quest from a business point of view, the effeiciency in terms of paper costs is a good move. It is also better for the trees (Molwanh would be happy). But if KJC should dare to try and increase turn rates again then perhaps I will have something to say. JPG> It's just a little annoying when turning over the sheets all the time and getting all muddled about the order. NB> DEATH OF COLQUIN EVANCHESTER (Quotes included for the sake of completeness, sorry Josh). JPG> My suggestion, for what it is worth... The character is _dead_, and this happened in the game, therefore you should roleplay this fact out, not replace him, and bring in Davinon. CC> Sounds good to me. Perhaps the newcomer being a reincarnate of Colquin (or a twin). S/he and Davinion fight and D loses. Either gets kicked out for being a heel (rest of the group recognise his true character - or lack of it) or stays within the group, holding a grudge, ready to take over at the first sign of weakness. PN> I wish I'd built my groups to role play from the beginning, like NB has, it is most interesting, I think the evil brother should take control even if it isn't good for the group. AH> I'd say go with his brother into the all embracing arms of Ythcal, NB> I don't want to play an evil group, I've done that before and it caused too much hassle with players who couldn't separate me from my completely meglomancial character. I still haven't received any official word from the Elders of Zanul, after all Colquin was Sheriff of the City and it is up to them to assign his replacement. Mind you, perhaps Davinon hasn't told them about Colquin's death, in a bid to masquerade as Colquin himself? I'll see who the Elders send as the Sheriff and let you know. But if you'ld really like to hear some more, then join game5 - I work damned hard on the two-page fully decorated newsletter submissions - you guys deserve a look at them! Thanks for all you sugestions - I'll keep you posted on the events in this tragic saga, but right now I have a eulogy to write for the Seer Kharne. >----------------------------------------------------------------------------- NB> Alan, thanks for your suggestions. As I have said to others who have helped with thier ideas - I have already incorporated most of them into the outline plans for a game. It seems like all us Quest players know exactly what we would like to see - great minds certainly do think alike. >------------------------------------------------------------------------- KH> Concerning the suggestion about a bug in the program eanbling a > group to become immortal (I can't remember who posted it) I would be > willing to test it on my group. I have just re-started playing in > game 5 after getting my first group up to over 100 turns (highlight > was the 143 skill BT untill they brought in the 99 max and also the > 15 suits of +3 armour!!!!). I have a quest for life so it would not > be a 'waste of money' for me to attempt this as it may be for > others!! NB> Keith, nice to see you on the QD, its about time you stopped lurking around out there! So, you've got Shadow Company back. That should be interesting, after it all it was me who wiped out 15 +3armour, most of your +3 axes and a whole bunch of 100+ turn characters. Those were the days when Total Death meant something. If you want to exact your revenge on my group, then you'll have to excuse me for a little while until a new leader is appointed. NB> Oh, BTW I have begun writing the algorthyms for the game, but its quite a while since I've had to reduced well-written English into meaningless pseudo-code. Ladies and gentlemen, Keith is the Chief Programmer for the game you will hopefully be able to playtest this autumn. The intial city is well under way with around 100 NPCs developed and quite a few sites including the docks and the main castle. Keith, I've decided that you're designing those automated input sheets we talked about :) NB> Anyone out there interested in writing the spells, I just can't be bothered? I need an idea for spells that is a little out of the ordinary, everthing I create is just a homolgue of AD&D/ Ars Magica/ Quest and some LRP systems. I was kind of hoping for a system that writes itself. Every spell combination is different depending on the components, power of mage, and the target or something (can _anyone_ understand me?) NB> I hope you all realise that the only reason I have written all this is to tease your curosity. I'll be preparing a fact sheet on the game that I can send to anyone interested, but first I've got to think of a name for it! JPG> Hmmm.. something to do with mythical creatures... and possibly the setting of the game.... how about.. Dungeons and Dragons? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 6 Jun 1995 09:09:40 +0100 (BST) From: Lord of Spoons <A.O.Hooper@herts.ac.uk> > > AH> An option largly ignored is getting involved in the game > > newsletter. Admittedly I went ages without doing anything towards it, but > CC> Guys, guys. I *edit* one! AH> Actually it was meant to players in general rather than to you Chris, but just for you - why not edit *two* newsletters? =) JPG> *grins* Two free positions? > CC> Haven't got the heart. But you've certainly set me thinking. Out > starting fighter, in 56 sk fighter. Hmm .... AH> Thats what I did. Out goes 22sk BF, in comes 57sk 87to DF! What you could do is throw out your BT and recruit a HT called C.M.O.T. Dibbler. > CC> Just so Steve can pass on our reactions, can we have a quick > handcount how many people actually WANT their results like this? I vote NO. AH> I vote NO too - unless I am going to get charged less for them. > PN> brings up things like price wars and players robbing the opposition to get > a bigger market share, it's also another use for the news and rumours: It is > rumoured that the Black Death Inn has been selling unicorn flesh as rations, > come to the Business Tavern, we won't horse around. AH> What do you mean rumoured to be sell unicorn flesh? Its guarenteed (sp) to! along with Elf-on-a-stick =). Mind you Black Death have practically taken over the Decaying Goblin so prehaps I should try official sponsorship. Although I think I better leave soon as the Bloodwarriors are building a HQ and may object to a non-BW group in town. AH> Why do newspaper reports not give casualties taken in spell combat? Is there some good reason? If not I would like to see it implemented, it hurts my vanity when I see my group win a battle but reported as I take 9W to their 1W. Before anyone asks my group is not that pathetic in melee but did have 7 members put to sleep and the others just had a bad day. > PN> This can't be the Life Bringer can it? If it is I'm going to try it soon in > G14, thats what my Baldor Bonus is for, who else would like that ponce Baldor? AH> Nope its not the Life Bringer thing, but tell us if that one works tho. Whats the best sounding monster(s) anyones Called in a fight? Mine has to be 3 Hounds of Death or possibly a Minotaur - although my Ythcal bonus was not very high due to my thief being let loose in town (Black Death steal? Never). AH> Right following the requests heres the possible bug. Buy a ring of resurection then hand it around all the groups members and none of them should ever die. Now I dont know if you would have to let each member have it for a turn before handing it on, but since it sounds like it may be something to do with a flag not being cleared I would think you should. Dont blame me if it doesnt work, its probably total rubbish but it would be a major bug if it was true. AH> One last thing - I know Josh's e-mail address was spelt wrong in the G3 newsletter please dont tell me about it, I mean I hardly write to the Digest anyway =). At least my address was correct (I think). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 07 Jun 1995 14:43:47 +0200 From: rolf.semb@amo-rud.no (Rolf Semb) RS> I wonder if you have any maps covering some of the lands in Quest Game 8. I would appreciate it very much if you had any, since I have started to use Excel 5.0 along with the mapping projects. Do you know any who have more maps??? JPG> I have put this out in the digest to see if anyone can help Rolf... I am only in game 11... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- JPG> I got a personal message from Cathy on the end of my turn today! *grins* Cool.. just like the old days.. hehe... JPG> Okay, that's all for now I think... Until next time, happy Questing folks! >>-Josh-> "Dreamer... Nothing but a dreamer..." Up
