Quest Digest 21/6/95 From: ">>-Josh->" <J.P.Gallagher@durham.ac.uk> Date: Wed, 21 Jun 1995 00:00:00 +0000 ____________________________________________________________________ | | | THE QUEST DIGEST | | The forum for the E-mailing Quest-players | | Compiled by Josh Gallagher: J.P.Gallagher@durham.ac.uk | | Date: xx March 1995 | |____________________________________________________________________| o This is not an automatically generated compilation, so if all contributions could be sent to me in a seperate e-mail with paragraphs initialled, I would appreciate it a lot. o Please do not use this list for your own purposes; people do not appreciate thousands of pieces of mail arriving a day! o If you ever want taking off the list, just say, and I will be happy to do so. I don't want telling off for any nuisance mail! o All material here is the exclusive property of the author and may not be used elsewhere without their permission. ==============================**********================================== IMPORTANT-: The Quest Digest is moving to a new editor for the summer holidays: Chris Dickson <dickson.teaching@physics.ox.ac.uk> ALL EMAILS FOR THE DIGEST TO BE SENT TO CHRIS, NOT ME ==============================**********================================== JPG> Yes folks, this is it... my last Digest for a while! In fact, until early October. Sorry to anyone I haven't emailed personally who expected me too; the last few days have been pretty busy. JPG> Than you to everyone who has contributed to the Digest over the past 7 months, and I hope we keep it up for a similar length of time in the future. Please, those of you who are still around, contribute to the digest during the holidays -- give me something to come back to. :-) JPG> Thank you Chris Dickson for agreeing to take over for me. :-) I'm sure you'll do an excellent job! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Bill the Hamster." <godfrey2@coventry.ac.uk> Subject: Quest help line. The e-mail address for help and advice for playing quest is; quest-help@kodokan.vivi.com JPG> *grins ashamedly* okay, so I lost the rest of the advert.. anyone care to recreate it...? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 15 Jun 1995 09:04:47 +0200 From: Jan-Ivar Hansen_Bergli <jihb0101@toll.telemax.no> RO> About that two sided printing. I don't understand why you don't like it. JIHB> I completely agree. My old turns were taking up too much space, and besides there's always the environmetal aspect of it. I'm in favour of most things that enables the world to use less of a resource in order to produce less waste. NB> Does anybody have anything good left to say about Quest anymore? JIHB> I've got plenty of good things to say about Quest, but then again I've never been treated as badly by KJC as you've been. I don't really think that's the game's fault though. JIHB> Obviously you were unlucky with the game you were set up in. Some games are just more active than others. However, to complain about spell research beeing unrewarding.... What do you think research is like??? It's certainly nothing like success guaranteed! EJ>Pubmeet and I hope you were all humbled by my 15 ACE [100] weapon skills, ha! JIHB> You do enjoy showing off, don't you?!!? I hope I won't run into a fight with your group in any of the games though..... > I am not in the least bit interested in a slanging match with some > female who has to have the last word, tell lies, ignores the truth, JIHB> Why don't you two call it quits before you reach the stage when your best reply will be "OH, YEAH???". Anyway I'm pretty sure that most Quest players love some female participation in their hobby. I know I do. We're all in this on equal terms!!! CC> I don't believe you have any balls, Peter. JIHB> Now, that was a low blow!!! > > > AH> An option largly ignored is getting involved in the game > > CC> Guys, guys. I *edit* one! JIHB> Editing a newsletter makes the game a lot more interesting provided the players are active enough to bother to make a contribution. I edit the CrasiQuest newsletter which is distributed to both games. If there are any CrasiQuest players out there I'd love to hear from them (jihb0101@toll.telemax.no). The GM makes it slightly difficult to keep my own deadlines though as he tends to take about two weeks to start shipping it after I sent it in, rather annoying! CC> I have some G8 maps, but they are hand draw and absolutely huge. I was considering getting them transfered to Dave Rees' mapper JIHB> If you own an Amiga I think you should take a look at Ragnar Fyri's excellent QuestMapper program. He supplies it as "Fileware" so you only have to pay for it by sending him copies of the files you create with it. I use it on a regular basis myself and think it's quite good. It works on both A500 and A1200. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 16 Jun 1995 11:32:10 GMT From: editor@elbon.demon.co.uk (Paul Noble) >NB>that this increased revenue had paid for the increase in overheads. I >urge you all to cancel your subscriptions in protest! PN>Indeed I shall. NB> I hope you all realise that the only reason I have written all this is to tease your curosity. I'll be preparing a fact sheet on the game that I can send to anyone interested, but first I've got to think of a name for it! PN> Please send me a fact sheet. I am most interested. > > newsletter. Admittedly I went ages without doing anything towards it, but > CC> Guys, guys. I *edit* one! AH> Actually it was meant to players in general rather than to you Chris, but just for you - why not edit *two* newsletters? =) PN> Just coz you edit a paper doesn't mean you're involved in the game, I think AH meant for you to become politically involved, and perhaps not in your editorship game. Make enemies. If it's any consolation, if I were in G7 or 8 I'd have my group/s gunning for yours. JPG> *grins* Two free positions? PN> David Staniforth runs two newsletters. AH> I vote NO too - unless I am going to get charged less for them. PN> Agreed. AH> What do you mean rumoured to be sell unicorn flesh? Its guarenteed (sp) to! along with Elf-on-a-stick =). Mind you Black Death have practically taken over the Decaying Goblin so prehaps I should try official sponsorship. Although I think I better leave soon as the Bloodwarriors are building a HQ and may object to a non-BW group in town. PN> Why not come down to Bourt and start endorsing the pubs down here, they are mighty dull and bits of unicorn in the back alleys would liven the place up, especially since the Business are going evil. How about a nice quiet official alliance? AH> Nope its not the Life Bringer thing, but tell us if that one works tho. Whats the best sounding monster(s) anyones Called in a fight? Mine has to be 3 Hounds of Death or possibly a Minotaur - although my Ythcal bonus was not very high due to my thief being let loose in town (Black Death steal? Never). PN> Called up a Balrog, Jugganaut and a Basilisk in my G14 call monster extravaganza. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 16 Jun 1995 15:10:36 +0100 (BST) From: Lord of Spoons <A.O.Hooper@herts.ac.uk> > RO> I just need to make this an official compliment to NB. I'm quite fanatic > about roleplaying, but my efforts in Quest have been meagre in realtion to > yours ! Whenever I write my letters "in style" they are either not answered > (game315 is VERY lazy !) at all or not in the same style. Bit frustrating ! AH> I found in character letters are a great way of getting a reply - its probably quite hard to ignore something so unusual. I just pity my postie who delivered a letter addressed to me 'c/o the Decaying Goblin Tavern', I bet he was confused! > RO> I never did buy anything so far, but I robbed a ring that I can't > identify (in game 15 my mage is too powerless to use 98 :( ). Now AH talks > about that "ring of resurrection"...I always thought the ring etc you buy is > random. Or does one "abra cadba magic" only sell one type of ring AH> Nope you cant tell what ring you will buy, otherwise you'd just get 15K together, buy 15 rings of ressurection and hey presto immortality awaits! Magic items is one area of Quest I cant seem to find much info on. I believe the type of ring you get is probably on a percentage basis with the more powerfull rings harder to get but I dont really know. Does anyone have any good information on magic items? > CC> Not a chance, there is no way I am dumping my 99sk thief (in any group)! AH> Why not? Ewan got a 99sk theif in 16 turns (?) with a new group so I'm sure you could do it quicker with the Luggage. Can I claim to have the least aware 99sk theif? He's got less than 80 awarenes, something to do with the fact theif skill only started raising awareness by 3 once he had 60 odd skill. > CC> Yeah, and you've just started Steve looking for it ;-) Doesnt bother me - I wouldnt even use it if I knew it did work and Steve wasnt going to fix it. If I wanted to play a game I couldnt lose I'd play snap against myself (then again looking at my .sig I'd still probably lose! :-) ). Although if it does work those who are using it may be in for a big shock! > CC> And are you going to stop sending her dirty postcards now? > JPG> Slander!! :-) AH> Dont worry Josh, just remember this is coming from someone who shows off her stats at crowded pub meets.... JPG> hehe.. thank you for the support. :-) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 19 Jun 1995 17:54:26 +0100 (BST) From: "Bill the Hamster." <godfrey2@coventry.ac.uk> > JPG> I know I'm being lazy, but could someone give me the pub name and > rough location of that meet, and the time too? I shall be able to make > it, but only if I know where it is! :-) BTH>It's the Dubliner, in Digbeth, Birmingham. It's near New Street (Brum) intercity station and very close to a bus station. Coventry residents (both of you) will be pleased to know that the 900 stops there. > NB> In the last 12 turns there has been 1 newsletter, and there are > no alliances in game 5. Just goes to show you how enthusiastic the > players are. BTH>I asked K.C. about this and I was informed that thier printer has "run out of ink" and so has the suppliers. BTH> The Seer Kharne has been sent off. Hope you like it, when it arrives. > JPG> Yes, that is it, the new Quest Helpline advert. :-) It could do with a > bit of work on the presentation, Bill, but looks good. Okay, that's all > from me for now... I'll see you once more before the holidays kick in > for me. Exam results tomorrow.. urk... BTH> Erm, I should have pointed out that my intention was to use the old advert with my address replacing the old one. Sorry. BTH> Results tommorow? I've got to wait another month! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 19 Jun 1995 17:57:47 +0100 (BST) From: "C.H.E.B." <ctc@coventry.ac.uk> > CMD> I had the pleasure to be at the London KJC pub meet yesterday, and a > damn fine occasion it was too. It was great to see Chris (Clarke) and Bill CC> It was indeed nice to be able to put faces (never the ones you thought they would be) to names. Finally a decent G7 turnout; 7 people. Me & Bill left around 6.30 and there were still people wandering around then. I hope to see you all at the Birmingham meet on Saturday! Dubliner pub in Digbeth, Birminham. CMD > Steve and Kevin were there as well, so plenty of occasion to have a good chat CC> Yes and they were still breathing when I left - now I know why meets are held in pubs ;-) > EJ Just a note to say cheerio to those of you still here and good luck to those > of you who still have exams. Oh yeah, nice to see some of you at the London > pubmeet and I hope you were all humbled by my 15 ACE [100] weapon skills, ha! CC> Oh you were that b*stard, were you? Git and I thought my 12 were excellent. BTW what are your mages like? Did you get them up to a decent standard and then started using (608) or did you ignore their magic-casting abilities and go for melee skill? > CC> Because KJC won't let me. Last time I asked about any free newsletter > positions, they passed the note onto an unfrequent editor who happened to > be a friend of mine. I'm still bloody peeved - I almost lost a good > friend over that. It was also rather irresponsible - the note had my > bloody account number on it. > (JPG feels sick in the stomach having only recently put himself in the > same position as Chris.. I hope they don't forward it...) CC> Not after *my* newsletter, are you Josh? If you are ... JPG> Not at all! :-) Just after _a_ newsletter editorship.. Pretty certain I could do it and keep up with it all. It'd be fun too.. and besides *whispers* I need the free position! I have no cash! > > JPG> I got a personal message from Cathy on the end of my turn today! > > *grins* Cool.. just like the old days.. hehe... > CC> And are you going to stop sending her dirty postcards now? > JPG> Slander!! :-) CC> Libel. Slander=transitory, libel=permenant form. JPG> ^K wipes a line in this pico editor... not where's the one with Chris' email address on... ;) JPG> Frank Maximus' WWW page is now up at last! Try it and send him comments... it's a bit late at night for me to do that at the moment... I'm tired. :-) http://www.iaehv.nl/users/maximus/quest/index.html JPG> Well, folks, that's the lot from me until early October. Have yourselves a good vacation... and keep me on the mailing list, Chris!! BTW, I got a 2.1, despite the little amount of work I did. :) >>-Josh-> "Dreamer... Nothing but a dreamer..." Up
