AG: More Power Ramblings From: dsaville@unm.edu (David G. Saville) Date: Tue, 27 Jun 1995 00:00:00 +0000 Allow me to set-up a hypothetical situation. I am not trying to be accuarate with my numbers. Say that a new character can get to 1000 power in 25 turns. An older character, quite likely, took longer, lets say 35. This is due to changes in the game that took place after the older fellow was already past 1000. I think we can all agree that a character today can get to 1000 power faster than an older fellow. Can the older character go back in time to use these advantages? Nope. Now lets say a change is introduced that benefits older characters. Lets say it causes characters to easily gain 100 power a turn from 4000 power to 5000 power. Will this benefit older characters? Undoubtably, yes. Now, will the newer character be able to benefit? Yes, just as soon as they put the time and effort into getting to that level. Here's the rub. The second situation seems much more fair as everyone can benefit (for the sake of example, lets assume no characters are over 4000 yet) in time. In the first case, only those characters new to the game can get the benefit. This does not strike me as fair. ****************************************************************** With regards to a couple of other posts, I do believe that in order for new characters to catch older ones they need to be designed and run better. If Paz, Golden, etc are great designs and run perfectly, why should they be caught? (example only, I know Paz is not run perfectly and others would probably argue about his design) ****************************************************************** As it stands now, it is easier to get to the wall Todd speaks of. So, if a character gets to the wall faster, he will likely get over that wall sooner. Dont forget that the older characters have been over the same ground. For example, should I start an identical design to Paz today with no help from my other characters, he would progress faster than the older Paz. If you looked at age 20 turn, 40 turn, etc, the new paz would be higher in power with higher stats and skills than the older one. The older Paz would likely remain higher in power for quite a few years but would always be less efficient than the new Paz in gaining power. Dave Referenced By Up
