Atlantis 2.0: Times 21 From: Geoff Dunbar <atlantis@rahul.net> Date: Mon, 03 Jul 1995 00:00:00 +0000 Atlantis 2.0 Times November, Year 2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Game Master Notes: atlantis@rahul.net for information, problems, or to play. I believe I have (finally) gotten through all the mail/issues that have be sent to me in the past 3 weeks. If you believe I missed something, I may well have inadvertantly thrown your mail out; feel free to resend mail. In the last Times, someone suggested that factions declare hostile all factions ending in .es. While I'm certain this was all good natured kidding, it could be construed as holding an out-of-game grudge against certain people. So, I would prefer if that didn't happen again. If you really have a problem with non-English articles, feel free to take it up with me, but I can already tell you that I think they are acceptable for the Times. Bug Fixes This Turn: 1) Skills that were modified by magical items were not functioning correctly (especially with regard to studying and teaching). 2) Mages now attack, as well as casting a spell they have set using the COMBAT order. This is so they aren't easy bait for assassination. 3) For some inexplicable reason, non-leaders were allowed to teach. One might ask whether the GM can read his own rules. 4) On guard units were allowed to stay on guard even after losing a battle. 5) Ships were requiring too many sailors to sail. Additions This Turn: 1) Combat spells will now show up for non-mages. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The young man reined in his horse at the top of the hill; the bodyguards and attendants flanking him did the same. To his men, he was His Majesty, Karl the First. To the guardsmen who ruled the city he claimed as his kingdom, he was Karl the Pretender, or sometimes Karl the Bandit. A few, but not enough, of the people of his city supported him and his Royalists; too many had gotten accustomed, however, to the Republic that the guards had proclaimed so many years ago when they had dethroned the last King of the city. Perhaps more would flock to his banner if they thought he had a chance, but right now, he ruled no further than his voice would carry, and had but a handful of loyal troops. This would change, he thought. Now he could see the uniformed men of those he came to meet slowly ascending the path on the other side of the hill. Mercenaries, he mused, but powerful ones. He could offer them wealth, legitimacy, noble titles; a King would have a lot to offer once he had a Kingdom. And if not, such promises meant little. Well worth it to gain several hundred trained and armed soldiers. The Republic's days were numbered. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Another month gone with study and research. Boudiccea looks what her apprentices are learning. Sorceress is now very good in healing and Boudiccea gives her the "Doctors Best" for further studies. Little Witch has learned much about Fireworking. Boudiccea blames her a little bit: " Witch, always thinking of parties and joy and fun ... Pick up more serious studies for the next month." Little Witch nodds: "Aye, I will study riding next month - for I must be very movable when I try to do my fireworking job." Boudiccea laughs and says: "Okay, then show me, what you have learned?" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Greetings, welcome to the Atlantis News Network sponsered by The Black Company. This week our investigative reporters delve deep into the politics of factions in the Sledmere area. First we look at the one of the more colorful factions who wishes to remain anonymous and is known only as Satan. Reporter: Mr. Satan, what is your impression of the factions around Sledmere? Satan: You must ally we the guards. Reporter: Um, Yes. Why should anyone trust you, since you hide who you really are? Satan: DECLARE ALLY 0!!! Devil: Master you mean ALLY 1 don't you? Satan: Never correct me when I'm doing an interview. Back to the pit with you for 10,000 years. Devil: No, master pleaAAAAHHHHhhhhhhhhh [A second Satan walks in] Satan 2: Your interviewing an imposter. I am the real Satan. Reporter: Really? What is YOUR impression of the factions around Sledmere? Satan 2: DECLARE ALLY 0, so that when my undead attack the towns I can kill you all. Satan 1: No, that's not right. ALLY with 1 and defend the towns. Reporter: OK, so what happens after everyone allies with the guards? Satan 1: Umm, why sit there working and defend the town. Reporter: That doesn't sound very exciting. Satan 2: It will be exciting when my undead hordes kill everyone. Satan 1: If everyone defends me, I mean the towns, we will win. Next we interviewed The Emperor (488) leader of a large alliance known as the Southern Empire. Reporter: Emperor, what is your impression of the factions around Sledmere? Emperor: They are very hostile. For example, the Black Company has attacked an killed over 70 men of the Southern Empire, half that number were not even combat troops. Reporter: Last month the Black Company declaired war on your alliance of sixteen factions with claims that a member of your alliance is a theif. Is that true? Emperor: No comment. Reporter: Can you explain how the Eagles Nest unit 770 in Menter came into possesion of a magic wagion? Emperor: I'm very buzy. You'll have to leave. Reporter: Is it true your alliace was knowingly taking advantage of a bug and taxing in cities? Emperor: Get out! Guards! Kill him! **********technical difficutlies please stand by***************** A suprise announcement was made by The Cognoscenti (24) last month. They claim to have opened their boarders (the mountains east of Sledmere) lets find out why. Reporter: Why are you allowing people into the mountains east of Seldmere when you have had that area completly locked up since practicly the start of time? Cognoscenti: Well there are a lot of mountains out there and we need more trade factions to dig up iron and make swords and armor. Its really very boring just taxing. Satan 1: He's just trying to lure you out of the cities, so he can kill you. Reporter: Oh, no. Cognoscenti: Look, I specificly said no Satainism. Get this witch doctor out of here or I'm leaving. Satan 2: See, see. We will kill you all. We tried to get a member of the Iron Circle alliance for an interview, but they were to far away to reach in time. How ever we were able to reach Prophet Followers (251) co-leader of the Spanish alliance located south of Menter. Reporter: Moustafa, What is your impression of the factions around Sledmere? Moustafa: I predict a storm in the future. A great cloud of fire will engulf the city of Sledmere. The peaceful inhabitants of the city will rise up and kill the attackers. Reporter: When will this happen? Moustafa: Soon. However if my followers join in and help kill the evil city guards the inhabitants of the city will see the error of their ways and not rise up against the attackers. Satan 1: They don't speak English, they must be plotting to kill every one. DECLARE ALLY 0. I really need to get a life, so I'm going on vacation for a week. Don't worry someone will take care of my turn for me. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Praestbygd Realm Management Subject: Emergence of Threat Summary: The emergence of a Class 2 Perversion in the Orrebygd region poses a major threat to established control and small factions. Key words: Perversions, Orrebygd, Praestbygd. Distribution: War Trackers Interest Group Threats Interest Group Orrebygd Interest Group Praestbygd Interest Group Perversion Interest Group Date: October, 2nd year after AC emergence. Text of message: Recently an obscure faction has been claiming membership of a powerful alliance emerging from the Orrebygd region. This faction has been making extensive land claims. It is yet to be seen wether this is the beginning of a major land grab or a localised aberation. It is advisable for small factions to avoid this region until the extent of this "Blight" is established. Larger factions/alliances have little to worry about as estimates put this perversion in the low volume/ low quality categories. It is speculated that this perversion will attempt to establish control of some of the high population density regions in Orrebygd and Praestbygd. It's sucess in these endevours will determine the full extent of their threat to other regions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Land Claim Office ===================== The aim of the Land Claim office is to produce a list of usefull and dangerous land for the unsuspecting explorer, it is free and no claim will be enforced by the claims office. His discovery that Romans had claimed his ancestral lands irked him in a significant manner. In a dramatic moment, Eikelander, a decrepit mage, visited Mikey and disclosed: a) that Mikey must leave the forest, and b) that Rayelin is Mikey's father. "No, It's not true!" Mikey screamed. Within a month Roman soldiers had captured Mikey and had taken him to a "camp" where Mikey overheard something about Rayelin killing Eikelander. Then Mikey made either a dramatic escape or he fell asleep and was rescued by Ingle the non-orc, his new sidekick. But it turned out that Eikelander was alive, he had transported himself to Tromeforth for the purposes of regaining his strength. Meanwhile, Mikey and Ingle were trying to get to Derwent (or maybe it was Drammes) where Eikelander would meet up with them and presumably the three of them could have a big adventure. However, tragedy crept up on the pair, first they accidentally stowed away on a ship. The conditions were pretty bad. When they came within sight of land Mikey and Ingle jumped over the rail and into the roiling sea. They swam for shore, guided there by the campfires of unknown characters. When they pulled themseves onto the beach a person looking much like a sea elf approached. "It's the wrong weather to be going for a swim." he said, looking at the pair. "You two scurvy dogs look like you just washed up, you had better come home with me and get warm." "Where are we?" Mikey gasped at the elf. "Why you're in Skomer for sure," the elf laughed. "Where else would you be?" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ By the way We lied The Cognoscenti (24) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ T H E A T L A N T E A N E N Q U I R E R Version 3 King Chromic Acid is pleased to announce, that the latest version of THE ATLANTEAN ENQUIRER is now available. KARAGOUNAKIS AGGELOS <aggelos@ergasya.tuc.gr> has stepped forward and volunteered to take up the duties of compiling the "turn-ly" CCC reports. Please send your contributions to this address. Aggelos may decide to make some policy changes in how the CCC is run, so as to control the workload. I don't know what they'll be, but I am acting as a consultant to ease the transition. If you don't like the changes, no one is stopping you from setting up a competing mapping project. So don't complain, instead make suggestions. People not interested in the whole CCC report (which contains economic data on 200+ hexes nowadays, from all over Atlantis) are still encouraged to contribute to the Platinum Map, care of <Jippo@clinet.fi>, for a simple text-based hex map of Atlantis. I will be preparing a stripped down version of the CCC report and map that will be available for free download from the ftp site. It is not meant to be complete. Rather it will contain enough information to give new factions somewhat of a feel for the land, and to act as a teaser for them and everyone else to get you all to join the project. tim.hruby@his.com The Welcoming Hand (192) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The cold winter is here again. The troops are hunkered down in the freezing drifts. The tall leader in the black robe looks to the south east and grits his teeth. He will do something he has never done before. He waits. There is a feeling. He can not describe it, but he has never had it before, so he waits. The Captain looks at his men. The long awaited boat is not even started. He waits. The lonely trader looks to his jars. They are empty. The pot has been cold for a month. The land is too cold and the beans never had a chance to ripen and the plants died in the frost. He looks to the south past the pile of lumber for the unbuilt boat that would carry him back to the sun. He waits. The other half of a pair so long separated reads the lists of new recuits. His eyes rise and look out to the stumbling recuits training in the forest. He leans back in his chair. He is used to waiting, so he waits. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ##################GREETINGS FROM THE HERMETIC ORDER########################### We have lots of business to deal with this week so have no time for either a day in the life description nor a expansion on our philosophy. Thus we will get right on with the business of this week. ITEM ONE: We at the Hermetic Order deplore the actions taken by various factions against our allies north of Monzon. We refer to the unwarranted attacks on the Costa Rican Show Band and the Nor'West Company. As such we openly declare our support for our allies in their time of need and expect justice to occur. We realize that these events occured due to the CRSB's blatant pillaging of a region yet we also realize that this was the second month of the attack and that an innocent ally of theirs was killed. That this was the second attack in so many months is made worse by the fact that in the Times for the same month the attackers declared that their attack in the first month had appeased them and that they accepted CRSB's apology. Those groups involved in the attack have been noted as groups for concern and will thus be watched. (It particularly hurts that a group that both the Nor'West Company and we are supposed to be allied with was involved in these attacks). ITEM TWO: Good news for those budding magi out there!!!! The Collegium of the Hermetic Order has been re-established in Monzon. That's right, one of the original academies of magery has re-opened with some success. For a mere 75 silver a month per student (small discounts for volume), we are teaching the following disciplines; construct, ethereal, life, and nature. Remember though that to be tought by the collegium one must be friendly or allied to the Hermetic Order (215). If you are interested in the Hermetic arts please contact our registrar's office at: jepether@flash.lakeheadu.ca ITEM THREE: The Hermetic Order department store is up and running. We sell magic items and enchant objects at reasonable prices. The order desk is open now. We have at present a one month waiting list (ie you make the order, we make the item, and the following month give it to you) so in order for everything to work smoothly we are recommending a half down upon order, rest upon receipt (ie the month we make it we receive half the silver, the month we send it we receive the rest). Since this is a new department we are open to negotiation. NOTE: Since we are signatory to the Monzon Mages guild and their sub-department the Monzon Magic Store, we also agree upon the prices listed with them. E-Mail address as above. ITEM FOUR: The Hermetic Order is seek a teaching in Nature 3 or 4; if there is someone in the Monzon area with that discipline and is willing to teach, please contact us. And nothing can let us guess what the forthcoming one will do. Januaries are very versatile months in Atlantis. Will the winter last all four months in the northern hemicylinder (not a sphere, remember) ? Will January happen twice, to take its revenge ? New factions think they know better than we old settlers, and that their knowledge of God's rules are more up-to-date. Let this reminder be a lesson and a warning for them : nothing can replace experience, and you'd have found nowhere in the rules that Januaries are vanishable. - Acrobatty the Rigolo, of the Jokomicalaughunny Buffoons. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ***************************************************************** * * * M M EEEEE N N TTTTT EEEEE RRRR '' SSSS * * M M M E N N N T E R R ' S * * M M EEE N NN T EEE R RR SSS * * M M E N N T E R R S * * M M EEEEE N N T EEEEE R R SSSS * * * * * * TTTTT RRRR AAAAA IIIII N N M M EEEEE N N TTTTT * * T R R A A I N N N M M M E N N N T * * T R RR AAAAA I N NN M M EEE N NN T * * T R R A A I N N M M E N N T * * T R R A A IIIII N N M M EEEEE N N T * * * * * * AAAAA SSSS OOO CCCC IIIII AAAAA TTTTT EEEEE SSSS * * A A S O O C I A A T E S * * AAAAA SSS O O C I AAAAA T EEE SSS * * A A S O O C I A A T E S * * A A SSSS OOO CCCC IIIII A A T EEEEE SSSS * * * * * ***************************************************************** WE CAN MAKE YOUR TRAINMENT FASTER AND EASIER !! He quietly appraised the room and its decorations. "Hmm, doze two gnazhki did good job of making holy room of Gdunbar look gud. Dirtbag extremely like da pritty picter on da walls. Dirtbag and Gdunbar will t'ank doze gnazhki. Yes, we's will t'ank doze two." The room had been decorated with interesting bits of elven, human and dwarven anatomy. A large, crudely smeared mural depicting a battle scene and the religious ceremonies celebrating victory had been daubed on the four walls and ceiling using the pulp of jooba nuts and other jungle fruits. An observer inexperienced in orcish interior decorating of religious buildings would have thought that this was a comparative sentient being anatomy lab instead of a temple. Dirtbag liked to come into this room and wait for the voice of Gdunbar to stir within him. It was always so calming to sit in this room, deep in the heart of the stone pile, away from the sounds of crashing stones and the screams of elves being subjected to revenue extraction. Here, Dirtbag could hear the voice of Gdunbar in the creaking of the settling stone blocks of the stone pile. His contemplation was disturbed by the sounds of orcs squabbling in the corridor outside. "Youze tell Dirtbag!" "No, youze tells Dirtbag! Me did it last time and look! My ear still purple from Dirtbag hitting me! And he has da hickory stick wit' him today, too!" "Da why for youze be vice president! I no be vice prezident, me's be snoop. No want be vice president!" The second orc stamped his feet on the floor for added emphasis. Dirtbag stirred on his seat. "Gets in heres, youze stinkin' gnazhki! Gdunbar tells me dat you better be quick!" Two orcs slipped into the room, one orc doing a very good job of hiding behind the other. The front orc said, in a timid voice, "Great Dirtbag, dis be vice president Stumpy. Stumpy tell Dirtbag dat da snoop Dirtbag tell snoop on 'Erminic Oder be back. Snoopy be right here." With that, the vice president grabbed the smaller orc hiding behind him and thrust him towards Dirtbag. The vice president then scurried from the room, his broad feet making slapping noises on the stone floor. "Snoopy, did Snoopy snoop on da 'Erminic Oder? Did Snoopy see wot doze stinkin' mages be doin' ?" The small orc attempted to melt into the shadows but he couldn't do it here inside the temple. "Master Dirtbag, Snoopy haf to tell dat Snoopy was caught by de 'Erminic Oder." Snoopy shuffled his feet. "But Snoopy doan tell dem nothin'! No, Snoopy doan tell dem anyt'ing! Eben when dey take sharp pointy metal sticks and poke me wit' dem! Or when dey burn fingers of Snoopy wit' magic fires! Please! Please believe dat Snoopy no tell dem anyt'ing!" "Doze finger-wavin' mages catch Snoopy, eh? If Snoopy not tell dem anyt'ing, what did Snoopy tell dem?" While saying this, Dirtbag tapped the hickory stick against the stone block in a steady, mind destroying rhythm. "Snoopy tell dem lies! Snoopy tells dem a bib bag of lies. Snoopy tells dem dat Dirtbag be giant orc, ten feets tall dat eats elves for breakfast. Dat de nice, nice orcs want make peace and friendlies wit' da 'Erminc Oder and da Lidless Eye dat dey serve. Snoopy tells dem lies, Master Dirtbag" (editor: an observant reader will remember that Dirtbag does, in fact, eat elves for breakfast, preferably the newly hatched infant ones that don't taste too strong.) "Dat be good, Snoopy. What can Snoopy tell Dirtbag and Gdunbar about the 'Erminic Oder? Did Snoopy see de mages ?" Snoopy breathed a little easier. "Dere's be fours of dem. Da oldest and wrinkliest be Eelstank. He real messy, look like elf nest after youze chase de little ones out. Dere's be two more, Achin and Gail. Achin look funny like, like big elf with furry ear. He act funny like two, always drinking fermented jooba nut juice and Dirtbag know dat it rot de brain. And Gail, he be he despite him having girl name. Da meanest one be called Pil'o'tin, cuz he be wearing shiny metal suit." Dirtbag stood and placed his hand on Snoopy's shoulder. "Dat's good, little Snoopy buddy. Gdunbar be pleased with Snoopy. Gdunbar say dat youze can be vice preseident!" Snoopy tried to escape from the honour, but Dirtbag's grip was too stong. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Nine Billion Names Of ...? --------------------------------- (apologies to the late Dr. Asimov) Part IV: What Happened to Henry LAST MONTH in "THE NINE BILLION NAMES OF ...?" > With that, the crowd surged forward, weapons unsheathed, howling > for blood. Henry, unarmed and alone, took a step back, and was > just about to turn and run when ... AND NOW, PART IV: ...the swinging ax of the first charging Viking clove him in two. Henry crumpled to the floor in a bloody pile that would have been really unpleasant to look at had the audience not been all battle-hardened warrior priests and their minions. The assembly roared their approval, a roar that was joined by the superstitious torch-waiving mob that had shown up in Part III of our drama. Suddenly a new voice cut through the din. "Let me through! Please, let me through!" it said. "I have a message for Dr. Krastner from Centre Denbigh! Make way, make way!" The messenger, carrying a small scroll tube emblazoned with an ornate purple snowflake, knelt beside Henry's body. "Ooh," he whined, "why'd you have to kill him before I could deliver my message? Now I've failed in my mission. I'll be sweeping out the Centre's stables for months!" While contemplating this fate, he absent-mindedly dropped the scroll tube. "Here, why don't you let me take that," whispered a quiet but firm voice behind the messenger. A bony arm in a threadbare green robe sleeve snaked through the crowd and quietly snatched the scroll case. But Denbigh's messenger was too startled to see. The messenger had just noticed a thin seam along Henry's throat where the flesh had started to pull away from his body. Abruptly he grabbed the strip of flesh and tugged. A mask in Henry Krastner's likeness peeled away from the face of an elf. "He was wearing a mask! That wasn't Dr. Krastner at all," said the messenger, rising to his feet. "Who is it?" The Nordic priest-king who had delivered the fatal blow dropped his ax in disgust. "A common elf," he said. "You can buy them for $60 on any street corner. Hardly worth taking the time to kill." "Man, is that an overused dramatic clich=E9," said a voice from the back of the hall. Suddenly the messenger noticed the missing scroll. "Hey, where's my scroll?" he cried. He turned just in time to see a hunched figure in a green robe duck out the door into the night... (to be continued) Next Week: How Long Can This Go On? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I thought I had gone completely insane. Sometimes I thought I was just plain dead, and this was the afterlife. Then I would catch a glimpse of a speck floating nearby, and I would realize that it was Mr. Lunchnick an impossibly long distance away. I souldn't be able to see that far, and thinking of it drove me into new waves of dimentia. Time and space had no meaning, and I think I started to forget what they even meant except that a beginning would mark some point in time, which was impossible. I wasn't even sure that I still existed, and my only tie to reality was Mr. Lunchnick. But even he couldn't be as he was, so I'd start screaming again, only I wasn't even sure of that because I couldn't hear a thing. My soul began to tear from my body - I could feel that, and it was the most terrifying thing of all. Then we awoke in a strange place, and blinked unbelieving like babes born into a new world. It was all familiar, and yet all extremely different. People were everywhere. Mages in Blue, City Guards in Green, masses of people going everywhere. Hammers singing the song of labor, smells of the market, shouts that blended into a single cry of prosperity. It was like Atlantis City in that the people were the same, but it was clean and bright and unlike anything we had seen before. I picked up a paper and read the title: The Monzon Register. Items for sale, land claims, threats and opportunities - we had reached a new world. People hardly noticed us. As we wandered around the city we found other people who must have newly arrived also - you could tell by the stares, by the way they wandered around. Both Mr. Lunchnick and I realized we probably were as obvious as they were, and that made Mr. Lunchnick a little uneasy. It was clear, too, that crime would be no simple matter in this city. Mages everywhere, looking, but not just looking. They were _Looking_ at everyone, and you felt like they could see right through you. It was unnerving at first, but then we realized that everyone else was being watched, and we relaxed. No need to be on your guard here. No gruff hands in dark alleys waiting to rob you of your senses and your silver. We got a room and bathed, and ordered up new clothes. This would be a clean start in many ways... All three were either members of or allied to the CRSB. In a related development, several members of the CRSB were spotted in 13,11 this turn, suggesting that the violence will continue. * Arlon under seige Last turn saw the deaths of 43 city guards in a hopeless attempt to defend Arlon against a horde of attackers. Only four of the attackers were killed in the battle. At current, the 7 remaining city guards are holed up in the city citadel awaiting the attack that must certainly follow this turn. The coalition of attackers are currently allowing free passage from and to the city. * Monzon Beat - 3 were killed in 14,12 last turn. Archibold mused, "Can I study while Windriding? Let's see..." He raised his arms, intoning the words of power. An Air Elemental came to his call, lifting Archibold from the ground, and onto its shoulders. "To Barika!" Archibold commanded. "Which way is that?" whispered the Elemental. "That way!" said Archibold pointing. "Head that way!" The Elemental bowed low, and swiftly glided in the direction indicated. "Now, for some study," thought Archibold. He removed a thick leather bound book from his sack, and began to read. "Which way now?" whispered the Elemental. Archibold closed his book. "Over there," he said, "Keep heading toward those distant hills and trees." He continued his reading. "And now which way?" whispered the Elemental. "Look," said Archibold, "It's quite simple. During the morning keep the sun in front of you, and slightly to the right. In the afternoon, keep the sun behind you, and slightly to your left. Now please can you use a bit of common sense and let me get on with this studying? Tell me when we arrive at the town of Barika." The Elemental nodded, and glided swiftly on. + + + "Master, Master, it's the town!" Archibold raised his head toward the horizon. "Are you sure?" He stood on the Elemental's shoulders. "Dolt!" he screamed, "This is Derwent, we've gone completely the wrong way!" The month nearly ended, they arrived back at their starting point. "What a wasted journey," thought Archibold, "though it could have been worse - at least I completed my study." Archibold bid the Elemental "Good Riddance!" and promised himself that he would NEVER try to simultaneously study and Windride, ever again! --- The Grand Archibold Magic Advisor The Four Who Are One Part Of The Riders Of The Rising Sun ------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE MONZON MAGIC SHOP (tm) -------------------- SPECIALS OF THE WEEK: ** On a VERY limited basis, magical weaponry is available for friendly, peace-loving factions upon approval of the sale by the Guild's ministers. THEY ARE HERE!". Thorulf came running up the hill, using more luck than skill to avoid tripping on the scattered rocks in the grass. He exhaled heavily with every pace, his beer belly swinging from side to side. With the sweat running from all over his body, he came to a stop on a shelf in the hillside where the others were just waking up. Bjorn rubbed his sleepy eyes and put on his glasses. "What on earth are you chattering about, you old fool?", Bjorn asked, well aware that Thorulf was neither young or clever. "I was just out for a peaceful morning walk, minding my own business, not looking for trouble or anything. You know me.", Thorulf began, still breathing very heavily. "Well, get on with it! What happened?", Bjorn replied. "I must have gotten close to the border without noticing, 'cause suddenly I heard voices on the other side of a hill. I was keen on hearing news from Monzon, where I've lived most of my life, so I climbed the little hill. When I saw them, I realised they may not be Nyxians after all, 'cause they had a strange accent, and they weren't wearing our kind of clothes. They looked forreign. So, anyway, I didn't dare to talk to them, but I did listen to their conversation. They were talking about the Immortals being near, making this an unsafe place for anyone with peaceful intentions. The Immortals are so fierce that anyone will tremble at the mere sight of them. They kill so brutally..." "Stop it!", Bjorn interrupted with a sigh, "WE are the Immortals! Eris told me and I was to tell you and the other men, but I never quite got around to it. I didn't think you would believe me. You know that most of us were recruited from an old people's home for mentally deranged. It didn't make sense." "Are you saying that we, ten vikings, all past our 50:th birthdays, are what the world know as the Immortals? We can barely run, left alone fight!", Thorulf said with a surprised face. "I'm afraid so, but we have to do our best, Nyx is depending on us. We're the only defence they've got. As soon as we get our swords and a proper teacher we will be a force to be reckoned with. I believe we will be able to stop any one man unit coming this way, with a minimum of losses. If we get a scout too, of course. If we had only had a good scout last week, we would have caught the bugger that was sneaking around in the bushes. Damn, it was close.", Bjorn said, his face getting even more wrinkles as his eyes narrowed. "Weren't we going to get armour too?", Thorulf asked. "Yes, we were, but it's the same as with the swords and the combat teacher.", Bjorn sighed, one again returning to reality, "If promises were pints of beer we would all be drunk off our arses." "Well, I hope the prowler we saw last week didn't see us, or maybe he didn't care. Anyway, he can't possibly know that there aren't more of us around, now can he?", Thorulf added nervously. "No, I guess he can't, Thorulf, I guess he can't..." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Arrg, Winter, What could have made me more happy?" There was a light drizzle all night long and he could feel the mud moving beneath him as he shifted to avoid first a stick, then as the mud moved, a sharp rock that keep poking him as he tossed to avoid the pain. "This was not such a good idea" he muttered to himself, as the morning light finally appeared. His idea of spying on the mage he was guarding now seemed a terrible one. But now, as the sun finally crept over the tree lined hills, he could hear someone aproaching from the direction of camp. This was the time that she usually went to the brook's small pond to bathe. It must be her. Quietly he propped himself up, careful not to move any branches or leaves that might make some faint noist. "Yes, it is her!" he thought to him self. "Now at last I will find out if she is young, or an old mage, keeping herself looking young." He peered through the thin veil of bushes towards the stream. She was the mage he was acting a guard for the journey to the new lands. Here at the pond with a wrap around her, ready to get into the water. She moved aside the garment, and somehow his vision became blurred. What was this. He looked aside, normal vision there. But back towards her, his vision blurred again. What manner of trick was this? He spent all night waiting, and she has some kind of privacy spell about her. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hej alle jer House-et-ellet-andet. She had always considered that, perhaps, one of the most important of those was to check on Per'Ubu. The old man had potential, no doubt about that; but he was prone to laziness and there was his drinking habit. All that had caused a few problems in the past, she only wanted to make sure none of that would happen again. Not now anyway, when things were getting serious. Such were her thoughts as she entered Per'Ubu's laboratory. The old man was there, all right; but he looked in a state, yet he seemed sober. That was somewhat reassuring. "My dear Ubu, what's wrong ? You look troubled." She inquired soothingly. "Troubled...!?! Troubled is hardly the word, Alia, I'm highly confused ! Have you read the Times ?" He asked more excited than ever. "No...not yet." She admitted a bit reluctantly; reading the paper was another of her all so important duties. "Well, read this then..." He presented her with a letter from Centre Denbigh in response to a Dr H.Krastner. "What's wrong with that ?" She quiered once finished reading."It's a very sensible paper, Denbigh's argumentation is fine as ever and..." "Yes ! Yes ! Of course !" Per'Ubu interrupted her abruptly."You're missing the point, Alia !" "What is it then ?" There was a hint of exasperation in her voice now. "He claims to be of henoatheistic faith !" He said calmly, as if speaking it out had been some kind of relief. "So ?!?" Mer'Alia was puzzled; she had never been deeply into religion, she had other things (and duties) to think about. "Well, you see my dear, I understand polytheism, monotheism and even henotheism. But heno-A-theism !" there was a strong emphasis on the A."What kind of a dogma is this ?" He continued."Does he mean he believes in a pantheon of Gods, one of which is especially less important than the others ? Or is it that he believes in a supreme non-God amongst many lesser ones ? Or what...? I just can't find any sense in that henoatheistic business, it's driving me nuts !" Mer'Alia was baffled."How can one get all worked up for things like that ?" She couldn't help thinking as the old man was rambling on."YOU'll end up making ME mad !" "Come now, my dear Ubu !" She finally interrupted him."I've brought a brand new book for you to enjoy and study. In the meantime, I'll write a letter to Denbigh asking for some explanation. Would that make you happy ?" "Huh..Oh, yes ! Sure ! Alia, you're an angel !" He replied, picking the book eagerly. "I know !" She said in a breath, but she wasn't sure out which religion. She took the paper and left the room. Per'Ubu was already deeply drawn into the book and his studies. It was a good job the old man was so versatile, it made her task that much easier sometimes. And she had so many things to attend to, plus a letter to write now ! Nevermind, that the week before the Great Mof in his infinite wisdom declared class three bad debt as class three bad debt, as it should be, and 10% of the nation's GDP evaporated. (Of course if he had declared class three bad debt as they declared class three bad debt in the land of 'Kome' it would have been closer to 15%, but noone every asks the Great MOF stuff like that.) Such are things in the Land of the Great MOF. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is a final attempt to communicate with the faction in the area of Avanos. He had been at it since Creation started and had never had a break from his duties. Not bad duties though. Ones he had been come into being to do. But, over the thousands of years, he had been having a thought or two about it all. He might just like to take a vacation. He found a break in the business and was looking at a particular apprentice to take over for a while. He had found a promissing lad named "Mort" who would do, would do rather nicely. Mort wasn't good at the family business, and being the youngest son, they were anxious to send him out to learn a trade. They had to concede Mort wasn't actually stupid, but he didn't seem to have the interest needed to properly get things to grow. The interview (according to Terry Pratchett) went something like this: Mort asks what sort of position it was. I USHER SOULS INTO THE NEXT WORLD "Oh, " says Morts father, "I should have know from the clothes. Are you and established business." I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR SOME TIME, YES. "Good. Good. Never really thought of it as a job for Mort, you know, but it is good work, good work, always reliable. What is your name?" DEATH "Dad--" said Mort urgently. But Mort was not listened too. He was soon apprenticed out by his father. The Reaper is here. The Reaper is there. You cannot hide or stall, Death comes to us all. As his eyes focussed, he noticed several of his advisors peeking out from behind trees and bushes at some distance. He then noticed the large burnt area around him, the strange clothes and the unpleasent smell of rancid offal. "You, what happened? Did my attempt to contact the outer gods of the Inverted Ziggurat succeed?" One of the braver courtiers approached nervously. "It's hard to say sir. After the ritual, you became possessed by a malign spirit and tore about the area cursing and causing as much damage as possible..." "And....?", inquired Osram, still feeling rather nauseous. I, Chaim Li Gong, and scribe to the Great Cao Cao Ma, write to this publication with only one thing in mind. Questioning. Question as to what right a party with the claim to be the legitimate Law in our Kingdom shall and does slight the names of those whom bear no resemblance to common thieves. I refer, only in passing, to the "Atlantis Police Department". Previously, your publication has listed articles from this afforesaid party, and I accepted their writings in good faith. No more shall this be the case. With the listing of most of our humble Students on this list in the Cremona region, the doubt of legitimacy is raised in connection to this group. I, and my Leader, am aware of a growing disquiet by other good citizens in relation to this group. I put it to you, the reading public: The Atlantis Police Department must be made accountable of their claims. Whilst there is a legitimate need for Law in the World, common thuggery or poisonous words are a poor substitute. --- Chaim Li Gong, --- Scribe of the Great Cao Cao Ma. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ... x=~ .uef^" .. u*""888b. 88x. .e. .e. :d88E @L J88N. 8888r '8888X.x888:.x888 `888E 9888i .dL '888 .8888> `8888 888X '888k 888E .z8k `Y888k:*888. The great war in spakker appears to continue. It is being faught between The Surweigans and the confediration to the N and NW of spakker, but you already know this. The Confediration semm to have the upper hand, they consist of about 12 factions and the surweigans have fewer. However reports have come in that the surwegians have more troops on the way so the war should continue for a while. It would be advisable that people stay away from spakker as it is very dangerous. More updates next week ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Myth stood there looking at the scene before him. Death was all around him. The dead and dying piled in heaps. The flies were a continual nuisance. "I wonder if I could concoct a bug repellent", he thought? The SZ had been slaughtered for two months straight now in Rantlu, and there were rumors of armies just sweeping through the whole of their kingdoms leaving no one alive. The smell was making him sick, and the devastation of war left him with nightmares. He grinned though in spite of all that, for there would soon be peace in Stinchar and many of her surrounding areas, and then he would be able to study in quite. And he did have to admit, it was rather fun confusing the enemy with something as simple as a parlor magicians trick. They hadn't seen anything of his full power yet, and the that power was still growing daily as he learned more of the mystic arts. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Targon stood ouside looking at the evening sun when he saw teh men he sent out as scouts return in haste. "It's no use Targon", they said, "we cannot go through. Troops that belong to the warlord Melvin block our way into the forest and swamp." Targon did not reply but mumbled something and went into his tent. A few days later Targon went to one of the scouts and told him that after a short discussion via carrier pidgeon, Lord Melvin agreed to let one scout into the forest southwest of Sledmere. And so the scout set off again... As one of the men in training looked over in his direction, and then pointed a finger at him, the man on horseback realized that his days were numbered. The war in Monzon is now openly acknowledged by the two-faced Costa Rican Show Band - now if Mr. CBT would openly admit that he is controlling the E-mail for two (or more) factions, we'd be getting some real honesty here. Meanwhile, down South, the Yakleks area is getting quite crowded. What was once a lonley stand of trees near the ocean is now a bustling center of activity. Let us hope that the war mongers in this area gravitate to the Spakker conflict, and the peace lovers stay near Yakleks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "See that land ahead, troops!" directed Kit. "That is our new lands!" "Yahowie!! Hip horay! Hip horay!" his troops cheered. They were ready to settle down and rest from their long journies. At last, a home within sight. Just across the mountain pass and in the wooded valley. They were going to their new home. They would first build a fort and plow some fields. Log some wood again and craft some wagons. Horses were few, but they would do, with new wagons, until the Cowboys found a few wild herds. The sisters rush in to see how the youngest one was doing. Wednesday had been in a coma-like sleep for days. True, they had given her a potion to put her that way, but now she was waking up at last. Not only did she journey through the ShadowLands, but she had met the master of Shadow and was returning intact. What new powers might she have? Wednesday was setting up when Elvira sat by her side and gave her a welcome embrace. "Sister, I am glad you made it back. Was there much pain involved?" She was very concerned. Mortisha was concerned too. "Was it some very good pain?" Her eyes gleamed with suppressed excitement. "Tell us what it was like to be near death," requested Daphine. "What did you experience?" Morganna was being quiet, she would let the others ask their pressing questions, then she would quietly check with Wednesday to see if the suprise excersion into the Master's Lands was successful. It looked good, she could see the powerful aura of magic around Wednesday. Very powerful magic had been brought back. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dorthy and her friends dropped from the sky into a new city which was already crowded with other parties. This month I present to you the last book in the triology "The deed of Paksenarrion", written by Elizabeth Moon. "Oath of Gold" At the end of book two Paks was a broken warrior, afraid of her own shadow. In book three we walk with her the painful way back from despair to hope. In the prosess of rebuiling her strenght and courage Paks discovers a lot of new things about herself and others. To tell you more would be a crime, so I'll stop here. It is a stunning conclusion of a marwellous story! Read it and see for yourself! With regards! There is no way I am going to work for anyone. See these 6 hexs? These are mine, I claim them. I might, just might, let a war ally onto them to tax for me, but I expect 80% of all silver collected. If you don,'t like that, then my troops will simply guard them and keep everyone from taxing. I am sure the workers will be much happier without tax collecters coming around bothering them. Yes, trade can have troops too. This tax thing is over rated. I can outproduce any unkempt tax collecter. And my troops will have the best of the weapons too. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hogli sat back in his comfortable wicker chair, contemplating his list of associates, new and old. It was a welcome break from the spell books, even though they had revealed some rather exciting knowledge this week. It was definitely time to think about his duties as a mentor and guide to the bond-brethren. Aster, the young lad with the fiery hair. Now *that* was a prodigy if ever there was one! Hogli recalled how cocky the lad had been when he'd learned how to spell-sharpen steel. And he'd been making much progress since then, though the lad had much to learn about maturity. Desmorandus. Ah yes. Not a terribly happy Pirate these days, all decked out and nowhere to go but the training yard. But ser Des had to understand, tactical superiority only went so far. And Hogli suspected, if push came to shove, that he could pull a few tactical tricks that wouldn't ever occur to Des. Nonetheless, Hogli suspected that Atlantis would come to know that name rather intimately...and painfully. And the new crew: Laslo the Red Monk, a quiet man working on his mind/body disciplines, hopefully a stabiliizing force in time. Certainly some others in the group that could use some discipline! And Killian of the Koors, a magician of thoroughly disreputable temperament and odious personal habits. Great potential, though, if Hogli could keep him out of his cups. And apparently his scouts up in Komarken had discovered a new raw talent, untried but again with great potential. A strange being, though...a Sprite, of all things. Hogli was a bit unsure if his bonding-spell would work properly on creatures used to flitting about the winds...but it was worth a try. Oh, and Comito, of course. Sometimes it was too easy to take the soft-spoken elder for granted...but he was always there, a quiet presence in the background, always seeming to notice things a little before anyone else. His talent for maps and geography were quite an asset as well, and no doubt his navigational maps would fetch quite a price from the Pirates in times to come. Hogli sighed, satisfied for now, a strange feeling. Now if only something *interesting* would happen... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ All hexes within 6 hexesof 50,32 are claimed by Ethshar of the Sands faction 600. for details contact: rutht@m-net.arbornet.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------ You might not have seen the discussion about the ripoff done by Loki of VLatimer. Actually, he felt totally exhausted. He and his troops had won a hard fought battle, despite their leader, Spartan, turning tail and fleeing at the last moment. A number of Spartan's troops followed him, leaving Jack and his fellows to carry the fight. Despite being surprised, Jack and his companions carried the day, defeating a foe who had defeated Jack's Allies two times already. Even worse than that, Jack wasn't allowed to rest. After some hard bartering, including the fact the most of the horses were to tall, but not strong enough to carry his weight, he managed to get the horse trader to sell him five horses for only a reasonable amount. Amazed at his good fortune, Allon grasped the reins of his horse and turned to his companions. "OK, whats the countryside like around here?" "Who knows?" replied the leader of the elves. "The only exits from the city are magical, and their locations change periodically. Since noone who leaves Atlantis City can ever return, noone knows what lies beyond. All that you know is he name of the city where you'll emerge. It's written above the gates." "Great." Allon frowned in thought. "Hold on, the gates always emerge in a city? Fine! We can go to one of them and then take stock. We should be no worse off there then we are here. Lets go to the closest gate." The elves immediately turned their horses to the northeast. "This gate is the closest. In fact, I think its location only changed yesterday. I think its linked to a city called Cremona now" "Allon! Wait!" A shout from behind them brought them up short. An elderly dwarf came puffing up out of the crowd. "Allon, my Prince. <puff> I feared <puff> I would <puff> miss you. <puff> <puff> Beldar the Storyteller <puff> told me where <puff> you were headed <puff>." "Wait and catch you breath, my friend." Allon tossed his reins to one of his followers and came to embrace the old man. "Athron, I'm glad to see you. I was beginning to think that I was going to be alone. What of our people? Are they safe?" "They all made it safely through the gates my lord. I do not know where they reside now." "Rest easy. Beldar, the man who sent you to me, knows an uncommon amount about all. He told me they were safe, even yet, but we must find them, and our new homeland. Come let us buy you a horse and then leave this place." Later, before the NorthEast Gate, Allon paused. "My friends, are you sure that we will not be separated in transit? My last experience with a gate was less then encouraging." "We do not know, Lord, but it is generally accepted that these gates are stable. They have existed here for centuries." "Well, there's only one way to find out." Allon kneed his horse forward. ...Continued ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CEO Bob (tm) smiled. The day was finally at hand when he could begin selling Sword 1.0, G.O.O.D. Ltd's brand new GOOEY sword technology, to the masses. At last he could claim the market that Fruitbat Technologies had stolen with its nicely decorated, but oddly named, short sword- the Raincoat. Still, it had been hard. S. Balrog had flogged a few of his elves to death trying to get Sword 1.0 done. Still, G.O.O.D. had managed to ship Sword 1.0 only two years after it had been promised. CEO Bob (tm) felt that two years was a reasonable delay for a complex product, after all. He looked over the hordes of media drones in the audience, all of the busy stuffing their faces with the free food that G.O.O.D. had provided. Bob (tm) wondered why anyone would work for that most horrible of beasts, the Editor. Lately, they'd taken to not feeding their reporters unless the writers could produce a story- not even Bob (tm) would go that far. Suddenly the trumpets blared, and the audience quieted. (But they didn't stop eating, Bob (tm) noted...) Bob (tm) stood up at the podium for a brief introduction "The future of weaponry is clear. No more will people settle for plain, boring swords, with difficult to hold handles. GOOEY technology will allow anyone to use the best weapons available. G.O.O.D. Ltd. has developed the newest and best in GOOEY technology, all designed to fit easily over the G.O.O.D. daggers that most of you already own. Ladies, Gentlemen, Orcs, I give you- SWORD 1.0!" Bob (tm) pulled back the curtain. He'd looked for months to find the biggest, burliest Orc he could find to handle Sword 1.0, but still Ahnold the Orc strained to pick up the massive instrument of destruction. The flack's jaws dropped as one as they saw the sword- G.O.O.D. armorers had gotten it down to only four feet long and 70 pounds, decorated in tasteful orange and green. Ahnold swung the cleaver at the target dummy again and again, finally beating it senseless. The audience began to snicker as the highly touted weapon proved unable to penetrate the thin cloth armor of the dummy. He quickly moved to the second dummy, but the blade broke away from the hilt as he swung and flew into the now-laughing audience. One of the flacks struggled to pick it up, dulling the blade with his pen. "Hey guys- they made the blade out of lead!" he shouted, doubling over in hysterics. Bob (tm) cringed- this wasn't going the way he had hoped for... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ******************************************************* * * * The Confederation Monthly * * * ******************************************************* VICTORY !!! The Centre of the Church of the Purple Snowflake would have been more annoyed at the poor stylistic manners of other authors, had he not just spent the last hour agruing with a metagrammatician at the Atlantis Metaphysical Research Foundation for his use of the word "their" in sentence positions most certainly meant for the word "there." It seemed that Dr. Krastner, to whom the lettre had been initially addressed, had made a point of showing the document to his friends in the Faculty of Linguistic Metaconservativism, and they had all had a good laugh over the Centre's error in word usage. Is everyone sick of swamps ? I know I am ! All over the world of Atlantis wars are springing up - ruining trade and peaceful study. Will this happen in Cremona ? Yes probably. Lets however try and be sensible. There is enough swamp to go around for everyone - some of us just want to move away from the city without bothering anyone. Heres a novel suggestion, why don't we all exchange information and avoid bloodshed. Now i know whats to the south of the city ( ocean ) buts whats all around ? Have these areas been claimed already ? I'm in the process of setting up a web page of my own - i could if there was enough interest devote some of it to the Cremona area - a sort of tourist guide if you wish. All the best, Jamie Reid Faction 728, jamie@memex.co.uk ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Greetings, people of Atlantis, from Chris of The Eagle Nest (74)! You may have read an article in last month's Times, regarding the Black Company's (124) declartion of war against me and a number of my friends. I would like to fill you in on the unfortunate and excessive behaviour of the Black Company leading up to this declaration. Over the last winter, I had a number of units located in a region near Sledmere, and witnessed a number of theives operating in this region against the Black Company (as well as other factions). I found this rather entertaining, and after I had informed the owner of the theives that I knew of their existence, and warned them not to steal from my men, I kept quiet and to myself. As soon as winter was over, a vast horde of Black Company soldiers swarmed into the area, killing everybody in sight. I can only assume that this was in an effort to catch the theives. Unfortunately the Black Company still couldn't see the theives, and they were not harmed. And now the Black Company is declaring war on my comrades and particularly myself because I will not give him the identity of the theives! I ask you, fellow citizens: would you give such information to a faction that had just destroyed your men in cold blood? War and bloodshed is not the way to go. There is enough room in this world for everyone --- if the Black Company had an imagination at all, I'm sure they could come up with some more constructive way to settle our differences. Peace and harmony rule, and in the end, after (if?) the Black Company destroys my faction, the theives will still exist to steal from them, and they really will have gained nothing. They were definitely up to something interesting . . . . . Earlier in the evening, he had noticed the expensive-looking cloak worn by a gentleman who clearly did not belong in this neighborhood. Hoping to snatch a fat purse, Pheldar had been following the fellow all evening, waiting for his opening. Unfortunately, the guy was just a wee bit too careful about where he wandered - well-lit streets with too many witnesses. Just as Pheldar was about to give up and seek out a new target, his potential victim stopped to talk to a hooded figure who materialized out of the shadows. The two argued quietly for a few moments before Pheldar's would-be victim finally shrugged and handed over a small pouch. Coins clinked softly as the other man opened the purse and counted its contents. After a moment, he nodded and turned to leave. Pheldar was astounded when he caught a glimpse of the City Guard's crest on the man's tunic as he turned. Afraid to reveal himself, Pheldar crouched motionless for quite some time after both men had departed. As he sat in the stinking refuse, he pondered what he had seen. Finally, he built up enough courage to venture forth from his hiding place. Slowly he crept out the back of the alley. When he reached the next street, he broke in to a run and headed back to his own neighborhood. He knew exactly who to tell about what he had just witnessed . . . . . ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ============================================================================ THE ROSICRUCIAN ORDER ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENCHANTED WAGONS IN KASHMAR (3, 17)!! The market is bustling though it allows enough time for the careful buyer to be more choosey than in the chaotic centres of commerce of AC. The craftsmen if Jaca appear to be specialist metal workers to the complete exclusion of woodworking skills. Whilst there is a great demand for iron and an abudnace of armour of the highest quality for sale, there is a demand for wagons and yet the means to make them sells so cheaply on the open market! The surroundings of only Ocean & Desert mean this must be on an important trade route from the desert regions. "Since my countrymen are nowhere near the city, I must find a way to reach them. Once I do, I am sure that they will rally to my banner. In the meantime, I will have to shelve those plans and learn something of the desert. When in Atlantis..., they say. Sigh." The second note was a hurried one from a friend. Do not I kings create, and throw the crown Sometimes to him, that low in the dust doth lie? And him that reigned, into his place thrust down, and whom I please, do heap with glory and renown?" --- And then, with the voice of a True Prophet, he speaks to the Trade Factions, in turn: --- "All otherwise," said he, "I riches read, and deem them the root of all disquietness; First got with guile, and then preserved with dread, And after spent with pride and lavishness, Leaving behind them grief and heaviness. Infinite mischiefs from them do arise, Strife, and debate, bloodshed, and bitterness, Outrageous wrong, and hellish covetousness, That noble heart as great dishonor doth despise." --- So has the Prophet spoken. After months of deep undercover work, and I mean deep, deep, way down deep undercover work, news of a frightening band of ruthless thieves are operating in Atlantis City. The Police cannot touch them - in fact the Police do not even know who they could possibly be. In fact the only people who know of their identities are the very thieves themselves and myself - obviously I need to keep my name secret due to fear of life threatening reprisals being carried out. However do not fear - there is somehting that is being done about it. Someone calling themselves the "Imperial Union of Nairne" has declared that they own hexes around the city. Meanwhile, the new office has opened in Yakleks. As the big sign goes up the front, one of the Partners brings in a copy of the Nairne declaration. "Hmmm. Who are these IUN people? Never heard of them." ... The next day there is a grand opening. "Hurrah Hurrah. IntraAtlantean Business and Magic now opens its Yakleks Branch. Hurrah Hurrah" cry the town criers. At the front of the office, workers carefully print out stacks of a new pamphlet. This one declares that the New Dawn will keep the peace. "Okay boys, go put it up on top of all those Impie posters!" IntraAtlantean Business & Magic like many other Yakleks corporations has Allied with the Order of the New Dawn. If you are a faction in Yakleks, perhaps you should also. He assembles the workers together to give them an update on the activities in the region. "I have some bad news and some good news," he begins. "I will no longer be the head of this work camp." The audience instantly becomes quiet. T'lan continues, "The good news is that I've been appointed to the Council in charge of all mining activities." A cheer rises through the worker camp. Finally, one of their own will have a voice in the Council. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Gigants Are Moving ---------------------> The Gigants of Hartdale are moving towards Jaca, we have only good intentions and are looking for someplace with loads of trading. An ill wind is blowing. Does the Reaper beckon to the Black Rose? We shall see, for a war comes soon... From the journals of the Black Rose ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dar blinked. The boss really screwed up this time. Instead of the sandy beaches and scantily clad women of Vacationland, he was transported into a crowded city. He checked his pockets for the return fair. "Nuts," he said, "Nothing but a welcome guide, a silver voucher, and a coaster from the Floating Vagabond." "I need to drink about this for a while" .........later.......... After much thinking, (and even more drinking), Dar has made a descision. "I'm gonna stick it out here for a while." He tells no one in particular. "I mean, how bad can it be???" How bad Dar? We'll see, we'll see..... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Here, give me that!" Roy snatched the message from the rider's hands a quickly scanned the text. Scratching his head he reread it. "Bad news," he muttered. "A recipe for disaster," he moaned. "The incompetents!" he cried. With a sigh he reached for the reins of the horse. "I'll have to go and sort this out myself." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is the story of Alkiones , distant ofsprings of the legentary bird Alkiona , the one who lays it's eggs during the 'warm' days of the winder. Theofanis the Great now sets out south of Atlantis city , in an attempt to rebuild the House of Alkiones. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Though undoubtedly oft debated, the trichotomy of life in Atlantis is an interesting structure. Hybrids find their lives strictly proscribed; a scattering of regions to easily control. With purity comes freedom, an empire, whether economic, military or spiritual. Yet shackles of a new variety emerge. No material goods for the warlike, no taxes for the avaricious, little connection to the physical world for the magical. Certainly one may transmute from one aspect to another, but once a road is chosen, most find it difficult to forgo its advantages for the sake of flexibility. You might say that change was a reward for the dabblers and unattainable for the ambitious. More musings to come. --An ambitious man ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fellow Magicians, Mages, Sorcerers and Wizards Please refrain from revealing all the wonderful spells that are available. Part of the fun is to actually discover them for yourself. I don't oppose the trading of spells, but rather than telling the world about all the spells you're willing to trade/sell/give, post a message and let the interested factions contact you. It not too much of an effort, and it leaves a lot of things for the rest of us to discover. Yours humbly, Faction (893) /* Cool name yet to be invented. */ <s92kko@csd.uu.se> ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Republic Strikes Back! (Part 3) ----------------------------------- The Legate shuddered in the sudden cold. Winter had suddenly fallen on them, just like last year. Only this time, they weren't as ill prepared. But it did severely limit the speed with which military operations could be carried out. He turned as Legate Zack, Commander of the Red Dragon Legion entered. "Now what?" "I recently spoke with our allies. Dale, that nefarious tactician of SZ is dead." "Good news, truly good news. How did it happen?" "We were clearing out the last remnants of soldiers lurking in (49,6), you know, and there he was. Tried to ambush our troops, even, but we were on the lookout, and killed him." The Legate nodded. He waved to dismiss Zack, but reined himself in. He couldn't do that, now that he had promoted him to command a whole Legion. It had been necesarry to split the army up, it's infantry components were becoming too huge. Legate Rayelin stared into the fire, thinking over all the plans for the next few months. So, King Chromic Acid thought that the Repblic was finished? He would learn better... ************************************************************************* Forum Romanum: http//www-i8.auc.dk/~strategy/Atlantis.html Ah yes, Exams and everything are over, and I won't be doing anything serious for at least a month.
