The idea is that you set up a character (or two, three....) from one of
nine races (each with +'s and -'s) and choose your first weapon from 15+
choices.  You start with a power level based on your stats/race/skills
and are matched up with 7 other characters around your power level.  You
fight these seven battles (without risk of death) and gain weapon
skills, dodge/retreat and damage bonuses ,and experience.  The experience
can be used to buy stat increases or other skills.  You also pick up
knowledge points based randomly on your cunning.  These can be used to buy
other skills.  Beyond the 7 training battles, you can either fight one
more battle (death possible), study (more KP), work (not worthwhile) or
do devotional things for a diety that you may decide to pick up devotion
to.  After your first turn you can choose to continue in the training
fights, or go on your first adventure.  Adventures are the life blood of
the higher power characters, but the risks of death and stat loses are
much higher.  You can protect yourself to what are called training
adventure sites with a training amulet until you have enough money to
support a ressurrection fund.  However, the rewards while using the
amulet are much smaller.  The game has recently added Quests to help low
power people get money for their first adventures.  Also, many older
characters are generous with both items and info.

An excellent snail mail game that is always being upgraded and improved
by the GM.  Costumer support is universally agreed to be the best out there.
