PBEM - Warhammer / Table top battles From: Neil Baker <Neil@neugen.demon.co.uk> Date: Fri, 14 Jul 1995 00:00:00 +0000 I read with interest the recent thread relating to a Warhammer PBM game / conversion. Although I hadn't planned to anounce this until we were ready to release our product, we are currently in developement of a MS Windows based PBEM Table Top Battle simulator. The main reasons for developing this idea was allow multi player games to be played over the internet without a whole game having to take place in one session on a physical resticed playing area. Although intended purely for PBEM we are also developing a two computer linkup realtime versions along side the PBEM version. We have so far developed the graphical front engine which displays an area of a whole country in various 3D perspective projections and plan views. Orders are planned using this program and an order text file produced which is then mailed to our automatic server where game turns are calculated. The results of these calculations are then sent back to players who can then load them back into the MS Windows front end program to display the results graphically. The landscapes themselves are created using fractal landscape routines similar to those found in Vista Pro. The screen resolution will reflect your MS Windows setup and detail levels can be set depending on the power of your computer and the time you are willing to wait between renderings of the image. Graphical effects have also been added like fog etc. Full magnification / zoom / rotation tools are also included. As I said before, we have still some way to go before we finish developement. Although the graphical interface is literally compleate, the combat engine / server (The easy part compared with the graphics) still requires quite a bit of work doing on it. The main reason for this is that the landscape routines generate very realistic landscapes and the combat routines have to incorporate all the terrain effects that are realistically possible to do them justice. Any further ideas or surgestions, or even enquires with reguard to play testing the game are more that welcome.
