The August 95 Galactic Inquirer From: dvistas@aol.com (D Vistas) Date: Mon, 31 Jul 1995 00:00:00 +0000 <<< INTERGALACTIC NEWSWIRE SERVICE >>> SUBJECT: The Galactic Inquirer, Volume 3, August 95 TO : All Galactic Citizens Of The Core FROM : Edited by M.W. Martin, Megafalagon University, Sol (dvistas@aol.com) ========================================================================== === >>> Possible Charges To Be Brought Up On Kludge/Trinutriate by Arvid Salamond, Sol Correspondent Earth, July 02: Shortly after economic figures were released this month from Megafalagon University, an uproar has been heard galaxy-wide from the financial community. It appears that the highly unusual and suspect increase in KLC stock (up almost 1,000 QPs) has raised many eyebrows in the galactic stock brokerage. Although no official charges have been brought by The Imperial Bureau Of Alien Relations And Trade, an investigation is highly probable. "We must satisfy the mega-corporate demand for fair trade practices by insuring that improper exchange practices are not... well... practiced!" said Rho Hobberwien, a spokesman for the bureau. No details on who initiated the charges were given. An attorney for Kludge/Trinutriate released a brief statement denouncing any wrong-doing on the cartel's part. "Simply stated, it's summertime on over 37 planets at this time, and many more people are enjoying ice cold Kludge Cola." he said. "It's the beverage of choice. Join the happy people today!" The investigation may begin as early as next month as authorities attempt to gather evidence for a hearing in September. ========================================================================== === >>> From Princess To Smuggler Queen In A Month by Her Majesty Priisciila Cartouche VII **Hear Ye, Hear Ye! Announcing the arrival of Her Majesty Priisciila Cartouche VII! All genuflect (or whatever your particular sordid little race does) before Her Majesty!** They were doing it, they were all bowing, curtsying, regurgitating or whatever in honor of ME... Priisciila! I finally made it to the top of imperial society, or at least I'm stinking rich. How did this come about? How did a spoiled little "bud" from the planet Fromida Froo reach these dizzying heights? Let's see, it all started when my daddy (the king of a small island on our world) bought a brand new hot pink L1 Trader. I was supposed to only use it to get from the palace to the mall and back. But I was sooooo booooorrrred! I wanted to see the stars, scoop the loop and maybe even make my own way in this big beautiful universe! I hot-wired the damn thing and never looked back. Things were tough at first. I barely had enough QPs left over from my allowance to equip myself, and certainly not in the style to which I was accustomed. But I managed. I got a small cargo here and there that happened to be in demand elsewhere. I can't believe how many hours I spent pouring over the Galactic Inquirer trying find the most profitable trade runs each month... this was almost like school! My first big break was finding two systems just a jump apart that had complimentary shortages and surpluses. I bought cargo for half the normal price on one planet and sold it for twice the normal price on the other. This allowed me to build up to level 3 in computer and cargo, from there I never looked back. I was always looking for the fast buck. I would trade, I would smuggle, I would even steal off dead bodies (Yuuuuck!). Around this time my second big break occurred. I met someone.... a Gecko. He swept me off my bulbous pads with his tall green good looks and his loud trilling. What a lizard! His name is Sal E. Mander, and he's an explorer adventurer. He's spent almost all his adult life mapping the universe and dodging the authorities. The underworld isn't too happy with him either. He borrowed the usual 100,000 QP early in his career and never paid it back. He now owes the mob a whopping 24,365,750 QPs. He very seldom docks his ship anymore because he always gets ruffed up something fierce. But he's content with exploring, mapping and occasionally finding that stray cargo pod that has a base value of 600,000 QP. I met him on one of his few dockings (blush!) in gratitude he gave me a copy of his complete Bigelow's Guide to the Universe, a list of 21 outposts and a diagram of the Wormhole Subway. Oh, and the best thing he gave me was a tip about where to find the biggest, bottomless supply of the most despicable kind of contraband..... in The Outback! The next few months were a blur as I slowly built up my ship and my cash reserves. I finally was able to get to level 4 on the last of my ship's systems. I decided to celebrate my success with a drink. Many aliens were found carousing about in Sesoruse Abd Al Bari's Aqua General, one of ISO #43's sleazier places. But I went in anyway. The barkeep was a Mechbot. There was revelry and excitement everywhere. It was hours since my last meal, so I ordered Thuban Baby White Seal Blubber Soup and a glass of Shaulan Black Beer. After finishing my meal, I paid the 10 QPs for the bill and sat back down to relax. I stumbled upon a gangly Terran sitting all alone in the corner, so I sat down and made small talk for a while. She gave me a stock tip that the Kludge Cola corporation is going to take over the Cargomaster's Guild, and I should buy as much KLC stock as I can! I gave the stranger a few QPs for the information, got up and left the tavern. Now I had to scramble. I only had two weeks before the next Stock Market adjustment. Quickly, I scraped up as much cash as I could in a week and bought all KLC stock. But it wasn't enough! I had to get more! The last week of the month I sold my force shield and ran double trade runs in contraband. Again I bought all KLC stock. I was betting everything on this tip being genuine. In the end I had bought 12,584 shares of KLC stock for sphincter gripping 3,901,040 QPs. Please, oh please don't let this stock tip be a hoax I prayed. The first day of the month finally came and I picked up the latest Galactic Inquirer in my sweaty pads and pawed my way to the back. Scanning the corporations I finally focused on ...the chosen one... KLC. It read: KLC AGR 1295 +985 YES!, YES!, YES! I kissed the Rhesian newsstand owner on what I assumed to be his mouth. I dropped to my knees and got out my trusty hand computer. Let's see 12,584 shares times a 985 increase per share is (gulp)...12,395,240 profit! I puked, then I passed out. I was awoken by the Rhesian kissing my feet and fawning all over me, he obviously had taken a look at my computers readout. Life hasn't been the same since that day. I cashed in a few thousand shares and upgraded my ship to a complete level 5. I bought my own brewery of Shaulan Black Beer (hic!) And I finally took the time to improve my skills, mainly in the ship combat areas, to prepare me for my new career as... Priisciila The Pirate Hunter! Look for me at a planet near you. ========================================================================== === >>> I'm not dead... yet! by K'Ment'Tat T'Lano, aboard the T'Zur T'Thain From somewhere near 'Outpost 36' (or there abouts): I have finally received my copy of the GI, Vol 3 June 95, and again this ship was listed as having been "declared (as) destroyed;" This is the second month the ship has apparently failed to show up on the roster of loyal Guild members. As you know, this ship was saved from certain destruction at the hand of an pirate when a Guild ship warped in and blasted the unsuspecting rogue! Perhaps the debris left after the implosion of the privateer masked the 'ka-Chugga, ka-Chugga of my damaged maneuver jets... after all, it did take a few days to reach a friendly, empire controlled terminal. Did the Guild ship offer to take me in tow? Not a word! But I cannot begrudge the pilot and gunner their glory... I too, might have forgotten about the ship I'd just saved in the shouts of glee after seeing a pirate ships plasteel hull implode. (They must have registered the 'kill' and not the 'save'!) AT least I didn't die twice, as the Enigma appears to have done! ( Perhaps there was some temporal Time shift in play there!? ). Maybe there's a 'Hiccobug' in the printer at Megafalagon U., something we all know is definitely 'native' to SOL! ========================================================================== === >>> Ask K'Yaryup by K'Yaryup Smith, Personal Advisor Dear K'Yaryup: Hello, how are you? I am fine. Well, not really fine, but I'll be OK if only you can help me with this problem. It seems that my wife has run off with my best friend. Well... ex-best friend. Now that's not the worst of it. You see, I'm a Brogian, and so is my wife, but she's run off with a Rhesian. A Rhesian! What could be worse than a bug! I suppose that a Piil might be worse, but not by much. I just don't understand why beings of a kind don't stick with each other. A Brogian woman and a Rhesian male could never do the thing together. They could never have children. What's the matter with these people? Don't they know that it's unnatural? Is it me? Am I wrong? Help me! - Bygone Brogian Dear Bygone Brogian: Well, well, well. Haven't we been being showing off our dark side. Did we read our letter before we sent it? Are we being completely intelligent? I think not! Have you never been in love? Did the color of her skin or the number of her eyestalks really be mattering? I think not! Can't two beings being of different species and background not still love one another? Can they not adopt childrens and little ones to their hearts' content? I think so! You are so selfish and wrapped up in your own disgusting needs that you have been losing sight of hers. That's why she left! I know so! You should be ashamed of your bigoted views, find yourself a nice, soft piil being to snuggle up with, and be forgetting about your troubles. Don't knock piils 'till you've tried one! Until then, you deserve yourself. ========================================================================== === >>> Oganza's Sports Beat by Oganza Busasa, Macovia Some of you have probably already heard about the new league rules on disarmed opponents, but for those of you who haven't, here's the scoop. Previously, a fighter had the option of bringing two weapons into the ring of stone, as long as one of them was a knife. The knife could only be drawn in the event the fighter was disarmed of his primary weapon. Unfortunately, many fighters used their knives inappropriately, and when three judges were killed last week after one of the arena fighters went a little mad, a decision was made by league authorities that secondary weapons are no longer allowed. Therefore, when setting up your secondary profile, only hand to hand moves can be used. Personally, I like it! I have disarmed scumbags in the ring before, only to have them cut me to ribbons with a hidden knife. Well... no more! I like the idea that once I disarm one of my foes, I can spend some leisure time finishing him off. W. Martin, Megafalagon University This section is devoted to player questions, concerns and rules of Smuggler's Run. Please feel free to send us your inquiries! Q: I have aligned myself with a corporation for the security and benefits. But how are votes going to be held, and will there be any repercussions when or if you vote? G'roknar Bigfist, #149 A: Any smuggler who is aligned with a corporation will receive notice of any ballot with his turn results. The notice will be from company headquarters, and will contain information on the issue of concern and sometimes advice on how to vote. They will run for at least three turns, and votes will always be tallied at the end of the month. This helps to ensure that smugglers who don't make weekly runs can get in on the action. There are no repercussions for voters. Just remember that the outcome of a ballot may drastically affect The Core and your place in it, and not voting is the same as voting NAY. PUBLIC NOTICE: Due to numerous requests, Pandemonium Circus is now playable by post or email. For a complete startup kit, which includes two free turns, send $5.00 to our post office box and we'll get the kit to you right away! - M.W.M. ========================================================================== === >>> The Standings Lists The following players have earned a place of exceptional honor and respect by competing and succeeding as first-class Smugglers.
