Atlantis 2.0: Times 25 From: Geoff Dunbar <atlantis@rahul.net> Date: Tue, 01 Aug 1995 00:00:00 +0000 Atlantis 2.0 Times March, Year 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Game Master Notes: atlantis@rahul.net for information, problems. Atlantis Web page at http://www.rahul.net/atlantis Starting this week, the turns will be run Monday night, rather than Sunday. The deadline is 6PM Pacific time. There will be no turn next week, because I'll be on vacation. You may have noticed that the reports are coming from a different address now. Please continue to send orders and times articles to the atlantis@rahul.net address. Atlantis 2.0 is now closed. People wishing to play will have to wait for the next incarnation of Atlantis. Tentative plans are for a low-cost commercial game to open in September or October. Restarts are still allowed. Bug Fixes This Turn: 1) You can no longer DECLARE an attitude towards your own faction. Additions This Turn: 1) I've added a "Spoils:" section to the battle reports. There have been rumors of spoils not working correctly; this should now be obvious if there are problems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE PRETTSTERN FREE PRESS HEADLINES * In the Karothean jungles last month, janissary squads supported by irregular auxiliaries struck a telling blow against the pro-Pseudo rebels, killing 5 guerillas and clearing an entire region of insurgency without suffering any losses. This battle is believed to have seriously weakened the rebel cause, but the Captain-General announced that counterinsurgency patrols shall continue until the jungles are entirely cleared of enemy forces. * Prettstern forces conducted mop-up operations in the swamps of Dezhou, finishing off the last of the forces of an unrecognized war faction that attempted to post guards in this area. The Crown currently officially recognizes only Chendo and Karthan as neighbors on this frontier, although has been approached by diplomats from a coalition laying claims to this area. How the Crown intends to respond to claims on territories already being taxed by the Kingdom remains to be seen. * The chivalry of Prettstern sallied forth from the city this month, along with several companies of infantry and auxiliaries, as the army commenced training maneuvers for the spring. Military officials declined to comment on what Prettstern's strategic objectives would be for the Year 3 campaign. BUSINESS * Baron Nieustadt was on hand as the Royal Working Faction declared their horse training operations in his barony officially open for business. Though limited horse production has been provided in the past by the Mueringen Sirens, it is expected that the Working Faction shall bring the science of mass production to the Dezhou plains, allowing horses to be brought to market in greater quantity and at a lower cost. * Declaring his intent to "invest in the economy," King Karl issued a writ to increase spending in the areas between Prettstern and Leighlin. Royal subsidies are being provided to a number of trade factions, large and small, to assist in the rapid development of production facilities and to count as advance payment for future products. The Royal Exchequer hopes this influx of silver into the southern Dezhou mountains will stimulate the economy and both increase and diversify production throughout that area. * The market is bullish in the Kingdom of Prettstern as the demand for almost everything remains high. The weaponry market improved as the demand for swords reversed its slide and resumed climbing. HIGHEST DEMAND: magic items, horses, crossbows. MODERATE DEMAND: swords, herbs, chain armor. SURPLUS: entertainers, slaves. GOSSIP * The wizard Morinal, jealous of the honors and lands bestowed upon Countess Mystara, demanded the Crown give him combat pay for the battle of Prettstern, despite having missed the entire battle. The magician alleged that his intention was to participate, but he was turned aside by supernatural forces. The Crown did not seem to sympathize greatly with his spiritual difficulties and instead reassigned Morinal to join the spring military maneuvers; perhaps there he will distinguish himself and thus earn his combat pay. * A mysterious green man of titanic proportions was sighted by elvish auxiliaries in the jungles of Karothea. Struck with fear, the elves concealed themselves as the creature lumbered past, shaking the ground with every stride. Though some discredit this report, citing the superstitious nature of the elvish savages recruited in the southern marches, the Crown seems to give them some credence, deploying a small party of adventurers to investigate the nature of this strange green man. * Noted Helvetian psychic Tuttle Phrodd declared that astrological readings clearly declared that "horses would be the undoing of Baron Nieustadt," apparently the instrument of vengeance of the centaur tribes exterminated by the baron during campaigning on the west coast. Confronted by these portents of equine doom, Baron Nieustadt termed them "utter nonsense" and stated that he "will not allow these foolish ramblings to undermine business ventures on the barony." * During February of Year 3, for the first time ever, faction 109's (Kingdom of Prettstern/Free Companions) turn report was longer than the Times for the month. This is both good (as it denotes power) and bad (as it means it will take forever to prepare orders). ASTROLOGY * War factions: Good month to conquer a region and post guards. It is safe this month to attack a better-equipped force provided you significantly outnumber them. * Trade factions: Give up on building structures, arms and armor production is the way to go. Look for a war faction to cooperate with, but be sure you pick the right horse; never join forces with a weak war faction, they'll just get you killed. * Magic factions: You will be sought out by a patron who will wish to fund your studies. He will have an ulterior motive, but consider it seriously, it may still be to your benefit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ La Dent Noire renaissait, cedrik le fidele valet de chambre et homme a tout faire de cette fameuse auberge en pris l'initiative alors que Bardol dit le mal-chausse etait encore a l'affut d'une guerre dans un pays lointain. This winter had been longer than in the previous years. "Looks like we are losing the war against the cold," muttered Richard the Elder to himself, "will the winter next year be even longer?" Just then a scout approached. "Sir Richard, I bring you most startling news. Our expedition into the southwest mountains forgot to bring any provisions." "What a waste, another expedition lost. This time due to carelessness. We needed to know what was on the other side of the mountain." "We do know sir. Here is the report." "How did the expedition survive?" "The expedition leader discovered that a third of his men provided enough meat to feed the other two-thirds for a month." Richard turned pale. He had heard similar stories from his neighbor Hogli who had left a land where this behavior was commonplace. "Innovative," Richard muttered to himself after dismissing the scout. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Land Claim Office ===================== The aim of the Land Claim office is to produce a list of usefull and dangerous land for the unsuspecting explorer, it is free and no claim will be enforced by the claims office. The decision to use it is entirely yours and you may claim as much land as you wish, although no claim of the whole world (or a large part of it) will be published. NOTE If you are claiming land you should be able to defend that land, I cannot check or prove this and getting people to send in proof is just a text file and not worth the time and effort. Also if you have claimed land that you no longer own or have obtained land previously owned by another faction, then please let me know. One last thing please don't claim towns or cities unless the city guards have been removed. I have long looked fromthe bottem of a barrel to find nothing in life for me. I have often looked threw the the window and seen life pass without me. Well no more. I shall begin anew. I shall stive to maintain and better myself and I shall, one day, rule the world--or atleast my small corner of it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Far away in many different existences, strange events were coming to pass. The swirling beasts of chaos grinned, stamped their feet and hooves and tentacles and claws and (skip a bit, brother Maynard) and they allowed some of the more unbalanced mages a glimpse of these other realities, in their dreams. Shadowcaster awoke, sweating and shaking, from one such dream. He let the visions he had seen play once again across his troubled mind's eye. Here, there was a dying beast called Vox; there, a solitary, ghoulish figure with no name, just an appellation of "Faction 204", feasted amongst empty ruins on the dried carcasses of long-absent companions and foes. In another realm entirely, groups of knights and alien traders gathered together in a place called Jadestone Castle in the Land of Legend and struggled with the very fabric of existence itself, trying to weave some sense from it all. Shadowcaster surmised that those who struggled to make sense of the madness were doomed to failure, even as he was doomed to misunderstanding of these nightmarish realms. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Alright who did that? The advisors could se that Sicman was a little bit nervous, as always before the battle started. "What, were are Myths magic support he promised me." Sicman shouted. After looking at the first battle he calmed. "Nevermind, we don't need them after all", he commented, after the first attack. After that, he mounted hos horse and started to start preparations for the next attack. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Greetings All; When we last left our hero...Paladin was communing with nature and, on occasion, pummeling orcs to submission... Let us look upon him now. The piles of orc bodies were beginning to decompose; they reeked and occasionally Paladin had to stop to cover his mouth and nose. "Bloody Orcs. Won't give a guy a break even for a day," he muttered as he threw some of the corpses into a hole he had dug. The constant attacks were becoming boring. "All I wanted to do was sit here and meditate but ...Nooo! The bleedin' weasels won't let me..." For hours our hero worked clearing away the corpses until night began to fall. It was only then that he noticed the light of torches approaching him. "Holy spirit there must be hundreds of 'em," Paladin grates as he dons his armour and gauntlets, and draws his sword. "Fine let them bastards come! It is a good day to die!!!!". He charges. There are hundreds of them, led by the infamous Dirtbag's cousin (and wannabe Rapper), Doggybag. They have encircled Paladin's camp and were preparing to attack when Paladin brought the attack to them. The bloodshed was enormous and after two hours of constant conflict Paladin still stood. He was, however, wounded and knew that the next attack would be his last stand; there were still over two hundred orcs surrounding him. He had only one hope for survival and he used it, casting the one spell that could save his life. Paladin then rushed back into the melee... [WILL OUR HERO SURVIVE? The map contained specific information around the rider's location and more general information as the distance increased. The update completed and the lines and symbols on the page settled into place. The rider's attention was drawn to a specific glowing symbol. It was close by and the rider was directed to investigate. Interesting, the rider has scouted for almost two years and this the first time any specific requests had been made. Details were very sketchy. There were supposed to be a few factions in the area and apparently some level of conflict. "I hope they're hospitable at this city." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm in hollidays, so my turn is only a surviving working one... when returning i'll send a good one (if still alive)... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The war has arrived and the combats started. I'll go to other more peaceful zones to the south... that's too hard for my men... 237 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Que bonito es escribir, por el bien de los lectores. Growing longer by the week. Nothing can stop the power of the shadow league. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dirtbag Chronicles - Part XII Dirtbag surveyed the feverish activity around the stone pile. The orcs were massing for war under the direction of the three generals he had appointed last week. Now all that was needed was the return of his spy. The fate of Snoopy, the orc assigned to spy out the camp of the Hermetic Order, bothered Dirtbag. Not because of any special concern for Snoopy (Dirtbag didn't value the lives of any of his people) but because of what it might mean for operational security. "Snippy, gets up here! Dirtbag wants to speak to best general." Snippy scurried onto the viewing platform. Since being selected as a general of the orc horde, Snippy had proven herself to be the most effective of the three. The other two, Slappy and Bippy, were pretty well useless. Slappy was almost catatonic with fear and hadn't left his hole for a month. Bippy, the young fool, was striding around like a cock merlafowl (ed. a large bird similar to a peafowl). Snippy had already arranged for Bippy to lead the assault forces. The young fool had accepted this assignment with glee, even the recommendation that he lead the orcs from the front. "Snippy be here, lord Dirtbag. Snippy ready listen to wise words of Dirtbag and Gdunbar. Please tell stupid Snippy what you want." Dirtbag adjusted his ceremonial hickory stick-elf club. "Once dat sneak Snoopy be back here, da Hick'ry Stick gnazhki march on da 'Erminic Oder. We smash dem into jooba-fruit pulp and lik da mess from the ground." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Interoffice Memo: Attn: All Staff Re: Position Openings Must be a self starter with ability to take on new tasks. The spring had brought an end to the storms, and with it, an end to the bitter winds. After closing his spell books, Angmar sat still for several hours in the dingy litle room of the Dragon's Breath Inn. Weather. Once before he'd explored the mystery's of the wind and discovered the secret to flying without the need for wings. After weeks of trying to grasp the realities of the energy flux of Atlantis, after months of perfecting his understanding of the workings of the nature goddess, it had dawned on him: there was more to the winds than simply using them to fly. He could harness those winds to his bidding. The ritual would be complex...just the right shuffling of the feet, the twist with his fingers while grasping with his left hand...but it could be done. The words were the difficult part. It would require sounds better suited to crevices through which the winds whipped in a desert storm than to any human mouth. He had once known an Elven mage who could produce such sounds. How had he done that? It had been a contortion of the lips, hadn't it? This would require some thought. Angmar sat as still as the night air. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DiAmato was tired. Knowleswright knew it couldn't last, but he was determined to make the best of it. He was not about to bring up anything about an eye in a hole in a tent wall or anything about a spell that caused blury vision. It seemed that the trek to the plaines to the southeast was going fine. They had been joined by three of their allies now. Every so often they would stop and allow the coyboys to gather up some more food. The workers spent all their time moving and had to work once in a while to keep their leanness from becoming starvation. The combat troops could only get so much money from the peasants as they passed through. Maybe if they stopped for a while they would be able to figure out where the hoards of silver and gems were being kept. But then again, maybe the peasants didn't have anymore than what was already being collected. There was a promise of great bounty in the plains. The scouts had reported back (they were on horses) and they told stories of many a great population in the plains. Thousands of silver of taxes waiting to be collected. Many horses to round up. There was a town nearby that the workers could buy and sell produce. But no sign of a iron supply or any swords being sold in the town. Yes, Knowleswright dreamed of the riches he would gather when they reached the plains. He would become a great leader of hundreds of troops. Thinking of that, he pulled out his books and decided to study his greatest love: Tactics. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lo! Per'Ubu was taking very good care of the freshly-born pet goose, they would make excellent friends. Already the old man was telling her all about his latest theories; Aglae would listen carefully and occasionally punctuate the monologues with a `kwak' full of meaning. "You see, Aglae, it all has to come from somewhere, from something." Per'Ubu started. "That's why I believe Creation `Ex Ovo' is much better than Creation `Ex Nihilo'." "Kwak !" Aglae was delighted, it was her favourite subject. "Also that notion of continuity fits nicely with the concept of `Everpresent Force'...and the whole idea almost naturally brings about that of `OtherWorld'." The old man was thinking as he spoke. "It may be that our world started as the projection of some OtherWOrld...or as an extension..." "Kwak !" said Aglae encouragingly. Mer'Alia had just entered the room, but Per'Ubu, oblivious, continued. "If so, it must be a sad place; because sad things happen here sometimes..." He looked stangely moved now. "Oh ! Alia..." He suddenly realised she was there, unusually dressed in very dark robes. "Have this sent to Mr Reid's Funeral Home." He said flatly, handing her a small letter. "Kwoin-k..." said Aglae sadly. First off, I am moving my main mage to a different region next turn, so anyone requiring my services had better make use of them now, or miss out for a number of weeks. As always, I have spells for sale (at $50 apiece) and at last count, was only omitting three of the level 1 spells. The spell for each foundation is in my possession (and also a few other selected mages) as well as all but three of the multiple foundation spells. (as mentioned). One of which is Rat Form which I don't particularly want. Any other spell you can name (from the first level) I can provide, now or next week! Special thanks to Matt Bassett for the great mutual learning experience. If you wish to buy a spell from me, let me know by Friday for this turn, or the following Wednesday for next turn. ($50 saves you the time and the cost of researching them yourself - there's also the danger of typos and not getting anything that turn at all!!!!!) Sweat was beginning to form in beads on his forehead. For what seemed the 10th time he leaned forward on the desk, his nose within 1" of Osram's. "Look it's simple Osram, I give you the money, your smiths buy the iron from the market, make the swords and armour and give the troops finished goods. What could be simpler?" "Er, look, its been a difficult week, do I make the swords before buying the iron or after? Could you just run through that one more time?" Ershwin gritted his teeth and glared "Ok it's like this..." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Questioning Chaim Li Gong stood in the wilderness, considering the Fate. As he followed his manuals to the drift of the morning sun, a slow realisation came to him; enlightenment a well-spring to his Being. This is the Time of Warlords. War would be the Way. Out of necessity. For Now. Until Peace came as the fruit of Conflict. Conservation through Change. So is the Nature of All Things. After finishing his drills, he walked back down the dunes to the base camp. Some of the others were talking aloud, both to themselves and to the elements. Said one: "I tell you! I saw a man on the edge of our camp! He was there, for a 'nary moment, then.. gone! What do you make of that, eh.. do you take ME for a fool?!" One of the Celestials regarded him with a wry smile akin to agony to behold. "It was nothing, friend. Take a rest, as you have deserved." He turned, his robes a flash of crimson and radiance. He strode towards Gong, a look of concern upon his counternance. "Master Gong.. I have.. disturbing news. We are accompanied by a spy. What shall we do, Lord?" Gong grinned, amused as to been called "Lord". Some two or three years ago, he was just another student before Su, now he had risen in the Order to a Newer Level of Importance. "Do not be alarmed, fellow student. I shall personally see to.. our visitor." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The embattled Chaim Li Gong had fought with the Man for at least an hour. Sweat grew upon his brow, but faith still fuelled the fire within his fighting veins. The Man circled, talking as he was want to do all throughout the battle. "Hopeless! You are hopeless! You paw at me as if I were a nurse-maid! Where are your much heralded martial skills?" Gong did not answer, instead he kept his distance, moving to flow with the movement of his fellow combatant. "Afraid to fight me, eh? Not so tough on your own, I see." The Man stalked Gong as he talked, looking for an opening to discover his weakness. Soon, if Gong did not act, there would be no more Oppurtunity. Finally, there came a clash. It was a matter of seconds. A flurry of blows, hands and elbows moving as part of a Divine Discord. Gong closed the gap to short-hand. His favourite part of the Skills he held. A single open fist, dealt with precision to a Gateway near the collar bone. The fracture of skeletal bone and sinew. A cry of the opponent. Followed by a cruel laugh. "Ha! Gong, did you think you could defeat me? Your skills are.. admirable, perhaps even comparable to my own. But you are Mortal. I do not have.. such constraints. Go back to clearing your Master's sheds. That is where your skill truly lies!" The Man turned, and with a smile, faded. Gone. Gong swore. His Master had to be told. Things would be different. Now with the appearence of the Nemesis in this World. The Time for Games was Over. The Dragon had reared its head. Challenge. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The time was ripe to leave The land was ripe to tax the region was ripe to pillage all in all a good time would be ha by all HA HA HA ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ======================== = = = SPAKKER INFORMATION = = = ======================= Well done captain. The following are excerpts from an exclusive interview with X. Q - X, how do you feel about being called a 'xenophobic jerk'? A - INSULTED! I'm disappointed that the BFM feels that it is necessary to resort to childish name calling in order to gain some measure of revenge. I was also a bit surprised that the worthy editor of the TIMES let such slander mar the pages of an otherwise outstanding publication. Q - The BFM have portrayed you as some sort of evil leader who attacked without provocation. Is this true? A - Abosolutely not! I initiated negotiations with the BFM two full months before any armed conflict took place. The BFM were surly, uncommunicative, and threatening to us and others attempting to carve out a living from the forests surrounding Yakleks. There are several factions who have and will continue to harvest the resources of the area north of Yakleks with our blessing, support, and protection. We had hoped that the BFM would also support the peace and growth that all who wish currently enjoy. They unfortunately choose to maintain there aggressive stance. Q - Do you have any final remarks? A - I'd like to emphasize that the X Consortium is a peaceful faction only wishing to promote peace and growth in the areas north of Yakleks. All who have treated us fairly have received like treatment from us. All who have insisted on maintaining an aggressive posture have been dealt with severely. I'd also like to thank you and the TIMES for giving me this opportunity to rebut the slander published in the Febuary issue. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To Everyone in the Cremona Area: Take a step back, distance yourself, and take a deep breath. The Atlantian Library Service is closed during summer holiday, but we will open up again in a few months time to give you more book reviews. Jonan the Librerian ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Nairn (AP - that's "Atlantis Press") A massive celebration was thrown in this magnificent city last month, honoring the Imperial Union of Nairn and their recent accomplishments. The Confederation Sages and their legions of entertainers put on the show that is sure to be remembered through the ages. The month-long festival featured singing and dancing in the streets and taverns of the joyous capital city of the IUN. The highlight came during the last evening of the party, when the handsome young hill dwarf known as the Singing Leader of Nairn lifted his voice to the heavens and sung the sweetest melody ever heard outside Atlantis City. His song, praising the wise leadership of the IUN Imperial Concil, could be heard echoing through the forests surrounding the city. An IUN spokesperson was thankful for the celebration, saying "This festival is really a way to say thanks to all of the people of Nairn, without whom the IUN would never have been able to bring peace and prosperity to the land. The IUN is happy to say that through their efforts and sacrifice, we have removed pillagers and hostile forces from our lovely forests. Once barren hamlets are again thriving with life, and the land itself rejoices and bears us her sweet fruits..." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jamis shook his head as he read the yellowed parchment the orc runner Ball Boy had delivered to his apartment the night before. "It looks like Tridon is at it again; running through the hills trying to hunt down every bandit from Nairn to the Northern sea. I swear that boy will give me a heart attack before the year is out." Dubro looked up from his meal and laughed, "Thats what you pay him for! You can't blame him for doing a good job." Jamis had to agree. Since Tridon and his orcish allies had destroyed the Tromeforth bandits, the mountains around Stackforth had become much quieter. Jamis had even felt safe enough to pull some of the men from combat duties and begin concentrating on mining the hills for the iron they held. Jamis felt confident that before winter set in a constant supply of the metal would find it's way to the Stackforth smiths. "Well, you and I had better get to work on the forge. I want it done by winter." Dubro smiled large enough so Jamis could see it even through the thick beard he wore. "Leave it to Dwarvern know-how, Jamis. I'll get your forge working better than you thought possible. Just give me some smart lads to tote the iron and pump the bellows and I'll turn Stackforth into the Smithy of the south!" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Keith was amazed at the variedy in the big city. He had never been anywhere before and this was all new and exciting to him. Many strange people and many new things to try and do. Strange food tasted, well, strange. He moved to a new vender and pulled out his purse to pay for the small tibit of food. Strange, his bag felt lighter. He paid, and while he was nibbling on the new exotic item, he fingered his bag to see what was wrong.. He was missing about half his silver! There must be thiefs about. He looked about him, but could see no one. He looked again, but there wasn't anyone even near him. How could this be? He remembered a magic shop he had passed. "Helms of Observation for Sale" Would it be worth the silver to purchase one? He went back to look. Wow, they wanted 1000 silver to sell it! What he could do with 1000 silver. No, he would not buy one, He decided to enter the shop anyway. There was another sign in the window: "Magic training for low fees" He decided he would become a Mage. He would not buy the Helm, he would make his own. And so he did. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The continent was vast, stretching like a great hairy spider in all directions. On two of the great spindly legs, hundreds of miles distant, two crimson-clad figures wrestled with their respective problems. Hogli, Gatemaster and soul-commander of the Crimson Robes, scratched his head in bemusement as he watched his protege Aster pack and saddle up. Hogli was often amazed at the folly and sheer energy of youth, and this young fellow seemed intent on being a case study. "Ser Aster, I truly think you should reconsider this ill-thought adventure of yours. There is much work to be done here in the Pavilion, and as I have said before, there's nothing you can learn from Shadows that you couldn't learn right here, with diligent study..." Aster pulled a saddlebag cinch, smiled merrily, and vaulted up onto his new horse. The new crimson tack and harness contrasted nicely with the ebony horsehair, Hogli was forced to admit. "Ser Hogli, all due respect. But I *must* make this journey. We both know the importance of gatecraft, and I am certain that the Shadows hold vital keys. In fact, your *own* studies might benefit from some time spent in the Circle of Shadow; I'm given to understand that their spell tomes complement ours well. Besides which, it's a scant month's ride away, and no great risk." Hogli scowled, but he had already decided to let the youth have his little trip. Aster was simply too difficult to deal with when he didn't get his way! At least, unlike Desmorandus, he occasionally *asked* first. "Hrmmph. A wasted month on the road without study, if you ask me. Make sure you take enough rations." But Aster was already wheeling his steed, heading down the southern path. Hogli thought for a bit about Aster's contention. True, his own studies *had* been a bit frustrating lately... +++++++ And far, far to the east, in a misty forest, the other crimson-clad figure staggered under the weight of a huge keg of rum. "Auhurrrrggg. 'Pirates Liquid Gold' indeed! 'S a curse, I say!" Hedrick, the hapless and exhausted scout, unslung the keg and sat on it, unwrapping his meager luncheon. Naturally, *he* wasn't allowed to sample the rum. Nooooo. It was to be delivered, intact, to a certain "War God" named Slaine. Strict orders from Desmorandus himself, some kind of friendship gift or such. Of course, ser Des hadn't said exactly *where* to find the fellow, and hadn't exactly considered the difficulties of porting a twenty gallon keg through the forests in winter, with his faithful horse Bimmie limping along behind, already lame on one foot. Hedrick silently prayed he might find this Slaine fellow in the town ahead, even as he dreaded it. He wasn't quite sure what to think of the man; some had accused him of being a scurrilous thief and scoundrel, and he'd been known to change his name at least once. But maybe that was just the sort of fellow they thought would make a good Pirate. Ah well, Hedrick thought, as he struggled to his feet once more; maybe it beats crawling around in muddy shafts and getting accosted by Under Dwarves. "Huuuurrrrgg!" Onward to the town. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The desert southeast of Jaca is claimed by Ethshar of the Sands (faction 604) I am buying swords bows horses and magic items for details contact rutht@m-net.arbornet.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------ With the ship still in the water and all hands with scurvy Sickness all around us. The Norseman inhaled the fresh air, blowing into the city from the mountains around. Getting rid of all his gold in Atlantis,he searched for new adventures out in the wilderness. Turning his horse around,he sighted the sea or perhaps it was a great lake. He wasn't freezing although snowflakes fell silent to the ground. If he only brought the skies with him in this Gods forgotten land. He could have moved lik a wind in these snowy mountains. Natives living in surrounding hills, seemes quite peaceful. Oh,from their armors,he could tell they were skilled in armor-making. He had a closer look at the strange fellows around. Nearly all seemes to be unarmed scouts. He recognized a scout for a gang of 19 highelves back in Atlantis. A scout for a minor gang of 4 highelves was also sighted. Most fellows were on horses eager to explore The mountains of Planken ,Carnforth and the land beyond. Slowly he rode towards the scout for the 19 hels, wondering if they could make an allianse of war. -Icelender- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ------------------------------------------------------------------------ How is it that I can spend my entire week composing my orders and negotiating with allies and enemies alike, yet still not have one damn thing to submit? everyone who is everyone knows what I think about my situation and I damn sure dont want to tell anyone who doesn't anything that they dont already know! " BoB (tm) hurried out of his room, leaving the dying elf behind. As he approached the walls of his new castle, Rosebud, his defense chief came scurrying up "Quickly- what's the problem!" "It's Fruitbat sir! They have hundreds of lawyers!" The defense chief shuddered at the word. "They're claiming that they own the rights to all GOOEY sword technology, and won't go away until we pay them all of the gold in the dungeon!" There was a sudden sickening thump as one of G.O.O.D. Ltd's defenders fell to a lawyer and was buried under hundreds of pounds of paper. BoB (tm) himself shuddered at the horrible thought of being attacked by a lawyer. The semi-mythical beasts were usually kept in the deepest dungeons, away from light, but always surrounded by hundreds of books that would cause instant death from boredom just by reading a sentence or two from their cursed pages. "Have you released our lawyers? "Yes boss, but we don't have enough- we'll have to buy more." "Do it quickly! We need to get back on the offensive here. Is anyone else being attacked?" The chief handed over a telescope to BoB (tm) and pointed over to High Priced Industries next door. BoB (tm) peered through the scope and noticed a single bored looking lawyer hurling a occasional legal brief at HPI's walls. "Hurm- worse than I thought." Bob (tm) cursed soundly. "They will take out the guard, and then slaughter every other faction in Atlantis City." "That's how happened in Komarken," said yet another voice. "The allies of the guard didn't stop the purge in Sledemere," mumbled a man at the edge of the crowd. Denbigh walked silently into his house. Erik gathered his few possessions and set out for the gate. He had troops awaiting his arrival and it looked as if they might be attacked by brigands. They would rue the day that happened. His lieutenants knew what it was like to cross him, but so far no one in this world had felt his wrath. His plans were making progress. Two mountains were already under alliance control and some assistance was coming from surprising corners of the world - for reasons that he did not wholly understand. So far, everyone was dealing honestly with each other, a far cry from his expectations. With one last quick look around, Erik closed the door on the small apartment that had been his and left, never looking back. Thor Christensen Houston, TX. But liberal application of the whip seems to be working. We must expand our reach, infiltrate towns and cities, overthrowing them from within. Money flows, also slowly to our coffers. Our once seemingly limitless funds have now dwindled to the point that some of our men can only pray and hope to escape from the wolves nipping at their heels. D'tark ------------------------------------------------------------------------ You awaken from your slumber to the howls of the men outside. You sometimes wish they'd stop doing that when they see the moon. You clamber out of bed, and slip on your briefs, platemail and sword, and stepoutside into the moonlight. "What's going on Sergeant?" you coyly ask. "Howling practise, sir" says the Sergenat in his stern manner. "Howling practise?" you ask in astonishment. "Yessir. Keeps the men happy, and scares the hell outta the enemy!" he again shouts in military tone. "WHAT ENEMY?" you exclaim, "THERE'S NOONE AROUND FOR MILES!" you shout at the dolt in the same manner he shouted at you, only louder. "Well..." he stammers "The..erm..the enemy we MIGHT encounter!" he defends quickly. "But the only war's going on are in the cities, and we are in the middle of nowhere. How are we going to encounter ANYONE!" you scream at him. "Well..I..erm...dunno sir" he confesses. "Nevermind" you gasp out with less than enthiusiastic tones in your voice. "What news have we got from the other MORE INTERESTING lands?" "Can't be sure sir. The scout has run off and we haven't seen him for days" "Wise man" you say as you rub your chin, hmm stubble. Not nice to see on a lady. "When that scout arrives, just shoot him will you, burn him if it'll pleasethe lads, but I don't even want to see him, ok?" "Yessir, of course sir!" says the Sergeant once more, "Anything else sir?" "Erm..you could bring me a couple of peasants to clear out my tent, I'll be onthe mount keeping watch for a while. Call me if anything important happens." "Right away sir" exclaims the Sergeant and disappears towards the small village below. They thus obtained a full confession of all crimes committed in Atlantis City over the past year, and promptly handed him over to the town guards who gave him a second sound thrashing whilst determining Natas was as harmless as his name suggests. There is no time to sightsee, I must get to the land of freedon. I have good friends that offer me an alliance in eschange for my budding magic skills. So, hurry is do. I want to wast no time in the decacant city any longer. It is rapidly going downhill and I wnat no chance to be set upon by theives.. Here I move to one of the exits directed by my friends. They had better be right in their choice. My very life depend on it. -- Geoff Dunbar <atlantis@rahul.net> Up
