Also, the rules have been updated to reflect the changes. Atlantis 2.0 is now closed. People wishing to play will have to wait for the next incarnation of Atlantis. Tentative plans are for a low-cost commercial game to open in September or October. Restarts are still allowed. I have received some complaints regarding the "Ethnic Cleansing" remarks that some factions have been using. While slandering other factions is certainly tolerated, I think this particular line is potentially offensive to some. I'm certain no harm is meant by any, but I would respectfully ask you to stop. Thanks. Bug Fixes This Turn: 1) Units that are given to another faction may not advance. (To prevent battles being triggered in this manner). 2) Units that win a battle, but lose men, may not move. If they give men to another unit, that unit may not move either. 3) That extra comma in the Spoils should be gone now. If you are good, we will help you ward off the evil ones. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Seer's Timescroll Volume #1 Issue #1 Rowland was despondent. The Seer looked at him sitting there staring into space and wondered how in the world events had transpired to bring existence to exactly this point. It seemed uncanny that he had such a companion, and that he should even have to worry about his.. Its...his emotional state. The seer got up, went to the small kitchen that Rowland of all ....people had carved out of the cave with a pick, shovel, and a rather heavy knife. "How about some Zebra meat?", he suggested to Rowland. Rowland glanced over, and with an expression that was as close to joy/approval as he could get, nodded "yes" enthusiastically. "You're a good lion Rowland. I think You're one of my favorite people of all time.", smiled the seer. "There is so much we need to learn about this new world......I'm still not sure how all of these things happened, how we became friends, or how we've survived so far. Are you??" Rowland enthusiastically nodded his head, and began a series of gestures the seer and he had agreed to mean certain things. (The vocabulary was still difficult, and woefully small) The seer spoke the words as Rowland gestured. "Back there", "watch",.. "In the past!", "right, Back when we met. Right?" Rowland nodded "The Big Change", gestured Rowland. "Woman, you(seer), sad/cry,'poof',me(Rowland), Big change, here,now." "I know all that, but there are other questions about this place and our lives that need to be answered", The seer continued, "Like, what exactly was the Big Change'?, How did you lift a thirty-pound pickax? How?- for Geoff's sake you're only two feet tall and weigh less than a pound yourself!" ? It was maddening! This world seemed to be here for some reason, to answer a need, but the riddle had not even been fully recognised. The answer to that riddle was far from being had. The seer voiced his thoughts for his own ears, "We landed outside, no clothes, no food, no shelter. You found this cave. You -got- some clothes for us, though I'm not sure where. You killed a zebra that outweighs you by at least 300 pounds. I gutted it, cut it , stored it. I seem to be able to read you mind, and others' minds as well. I almost burned my nose off with a twig!! This place is not like Earth! I can predict the future, even if its bad. You are two feet tall, weigh less than a pound, have no vocal chords, and we have conversations. This place must be magical, and I seem to be able to wield magic." Rowland grinned a fuzzy, toothless grin, and hugged the seer's calf. "It's time to sleep, OK Rowland?" Rowland nodded , and patted his open maw with a paw. The seer shook his head in disbelief, blew out the lamp, and lay down on his bed. Just before falling asleep, he wondered if he would wake up in a more familiar world. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ With fresh sight, Huber started our from the great Atlantis City. He wanted to see more of the world in this reincornation. His untimely death was not forseen and he had left loose ends, but he could not help that. He could not even get back where the death had occurred. The murderers would have to wait for justice. He hoped it ate into their hearts the wanton killing they were doing. He would put all that behind him for now and see more of the brave new world. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ High above them a falling star fell to its death across the night sky. No-one knew what the new day would bring. Maybe new lands and opportunities, maybe just death and hardship. Only time would tell...... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Melvin surveyed the city around him. Restaraunts, clean beds, and a bustling marketplace were all amenities that he could get used to. He could even get used to bumping into an elf every time he turned around. It was decidedly better than the swamp that he had inhabited until not too long ago. Particularly now, during the winter months. "Living in the wilderness is for the birds, as far as I'm concerned," Melvin thought aloud. "As you say," agreed an amused voice. Melvin neither twitched nor turned. Instead he growled a reply to the voice behind him: "Abercrombe, you're late." He did turn then and saw, as he expected, the vaguely smiling face of his lieutenant. Just as Melvin was opening his mouth to comment further, a gust of cold wind whipped his cloak open. "Let's go inside," he said instead. The small, two-story building that they entered served both as Melvin's quarters and as his office. Melvin and Abercrombe walked past the guards in the drab front room, and went on into a room covered with maps. "What is our status?" Melvin asked as he stopped beside a large table. "The troops have settled in," Abercrombe answered. "We are equipping them as fast as we can, but supplies will be a problem if we want to send them anywhere. The frontier is too far away." Melvin stared at the map on the table. "I have an idea about that," he replied. "Dig that witch out of that boarding house they call a University, and send her here." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE PRETTSTERN FREE PRESS HEADLINES * Street-to-street fighting continued in Leighlin as rivals for the city's rich tax base sought to further their claims. Prettstern forces launched a massive assault on the headquarters of the city guard, which had defied the Crown by refusing to allow taxes to be collected within the city limits. A powerful circle of mages led by the master wizard Ferdinand backed Prettstern forces, raining fire down upon the guards and striking fear into their hearts; in the meantime, the Arkadian general Pazuzu, with a strike force of orcish elites, savaged the guards' flank. Demoralized, the remaining guards were swiftly crushed by the hundreds of Prettstern soldiers. * The elimination of the Leighlin city guard effectively removes one of the three claimants to the city; how Prettstern and Arkadia will resolve their respective claims remains to be seen. * The Green Man struck again last month, destroying a plainsman village near the edge of the jungle. 18 were reported dead; the Green Man was not visibly harmed. The Crown has offered a reward of 5000 silver to anyone who ends the menace presented by this monster. BUSINESS * The Crown issued an advisory to all merchants and other noncombatants urging them to declare themselves avoid 1, behind 1, for their own safety. This move was apparently prompted by the increased sightings of hostile monsters and the possibility of other conflict. * The demand for weapons skyrocketed this month, in response to increased military recruitment and external threats. The Crown is particularly seeking a craftsman/mage capable of producing a steady supply of magic swords and/or fire wands. HIGHEST DEMAND: magic items, swords, crossbows. MODERATE DEMAND: horses, chain armor, buildings. SURPLUS: silver, slaves. GOSSIP * A monstrous conclave occurred in the wilds of Arkadia, where a giant roc, packs of wolves and a legion of Cleo I's undead warriors all met. Children were reported missing from nearby farms, and it is feared that a powerful necromancer is operating in Arkadia, and has called these unnatural forcess together, binding their power by performing human sacrifices. * The Liberal party suffered a blow as the Foreign Minister, Lord Grisbygd, was dismissed. Grisbygd was a strong advocate of peaceful cooperation, and his foreign policy proved highly successful in resolving border disputes with the Praestbygd Realm, establishing the Theocracy of Chendo, and negotiating trade agreements with the tribal elves of Karothea. His dismissal is believed to be due to the failure of this cooperative strategy in the north, in particular the lack of results from the embassy to Eskerfan and the refusal of local landholders to recognize the suzerainty of Prettstern in return for noble titles. The Chronicles of RatBoy, Vol. 1, Chap. 2 - -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ A pidgeon arrives at Boudiccea's camp. Boudiccea takes the letter and reads: Dear sister, what terrible news I must write.. our continent is sinking... Within a few months Atlantis 1 will be only a wide and vast ocean ... Our mages and philosophers are studying and thinking for solutions to transfer our people to other continents.. but there's not enough room to rescue all people.. It's very sad.. and I am very sad.. I will try to travel to you..but it isn't sure that I will succeed. So dear sister.. I bide farewell to you.. and should it happen that we wouldn't meet in this world again.. I am sure we will meet in another one. Your sister forever Undine (the bright sorceress of Tarraspan, Atl.1) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ A lone wood elf sits upon the tundra as winter sweeps across the region known as Skottskog. "Damn its cold", he exlaims, and edges closer to the fire trying to soaking up a last bit of heat before he must be off to tax the local eskimos. Muttering and cursing his bad luck to be posted out here in the middle of nowhere he stands and stamps his feet to get his circulation going again. Even though he moves closer to the fire it suddenly seemed much colder. *CRACK* "What the hell was that?", the startled the elf cries to as he jumps three feet in the air. His horse snorts nervously sending a stream of fog from its nostrils and pulls at its tether. His heart pounding, the elf notices a large crack had appered directly under him in the frozen tundra from which an unnatural cold seemed to eminate. What had the eskimos said about unnatural cold and cracks in the ground? Then he remembered...a chill crept up his spine and his blood froze, not from cold but from terror. Those stories they told him couldn't be true. Could they? He never would have stayed here if he had known. Ever so slowly he stepped toward the cage of carrier pigeons. He mustn't make a sound. His horse continued to dance at the end of its tether. Quite, fool horse, the thought furiously. *KKKRraaak* Another crack in the frozen tundra appeared closer to the horse this time. He reached the cage of carrier pigeons, opened the door and pulled them out one-by-one and tossed them into the air all quitely as possible. No time for a message, but then no message means emergency and thats exacly the message he wanted to send. Then the tundra exploded sending chunks of ice and frozen earth flying in all directions. -*-*-*-*-*- In the near-by town of Uxelberg One-eye steps out of the warm ale house to stretch and have a look around. Thats what he was payed to do. Look around that is not stretch. "Sergent", he yelled. "Sir?", said a high elf distainfully not bothering to look up from cleaning his fingernails with a sword. One-eye hated it when they did that. The distainfull part not the fingernail cleaning. He was rather comforted by the fact that they knew how to handle swords. "Get the men and horses ready to move the scout in Skottskog is in trouble." "What? You a mage with far sight now?" he said, again distainfully, while picking at his newest tattoo with his sword tip. That rather distrurbed One-eye. Both the thought of an elf with a tattoo and the thought of an elf picking. "No, but thats one of his pigeons over there and it doesn't have a message." "Your soooo f*cking observant." One-eye noticed that there was almost no distain in the sergents voice that time. -*-*-*-*-*-*- Riding hard and light the response force was out of Uxelberg and onto the tundra of Skottskog in only hours leaving behind several dozen elves without horses that could not make the trip in winter. Twenty-seven combat elves with swords rode out in front as a screen to the eighteen longbow elves and nineteen crossbow elves. Everyone a well trained vetran. Probably overkill bringing this many One-eye thought, but then thats the way we like it, overkill. The scouts camp was located half a mile south of the eskimo village. One-eye noticed that the village was built on an outcropping of rock. Wouldn't that make it colder, he wondered. They must know what they are doing. A lead elf yelled and pointed and One-eye spotted the scout's camp. Or rather what was left of it. There was a twenty foot wide hole in the middle of the camp and the scout's tent and supplies where scattered every where. There was no sign of the scout. Suddenly a dozen tenticals shot out of the hole in the middle of the camp and managed to grab five suprised elves. And just as suddenly two more holes appeared with two explosions of ice. One-eye's view of the camp was obscured. He heard many screams of terror mixed in with screams of pain and death. He also heard one scream of "ICE WORM". Ice worm? What the hell is an ice worm. Then he saw. There were three of them. Huge worms rearing up fourty above of the ice. They had huge mouths big enough to eat a horse and five elves at the same. One-eye knew this because he was a trained observer and could judge sizes very well and because thats what the ice worm on the left was doing. Each worm had around a dozen tenticals extending from its mouth. The tenticals shot out at incredible speed wrapped around elves and horses at random and dragged them screaming to be swallowed alive. Fifteen experienced combat elves where eaten before anyone had a chance to react. One-eye watched the remaining elves rally. Just over half the elves with swords had been killed, yet the other half bravely charged while farther back the elves with longbows and crossbows let fly. The battle was furious, raging tattooed elves hacked and stabbed with their swords to avenge their fallen comrades. Tenticals continued to shoot from the worms snatching up everything that moved. Elves continued to hack at the tenticals even as they were lifted into the air and pulled to their deaths. Arrows and quarrels flew sinking to the feathers and beyond into the hide of ice worms. The crossbow men paused to reload and the dozen swordsmen that had survived the inital assault...were gone. Nothing stood between them and the death that even now burrowed just under the tundra at them with amazing speed. One-eye prayed for a miricle and wondered if he was the victim of some cruel bug. If this is a worm, he thought, I'd hate to see a dragon. Arrows plinked at the worms as they exploded out of ice, but worms ate the arrows and elves as if it didn't matter which was which. The bowmen did not fair nearly as well as the swordsmen. A score of them were eaten before they finally broke and ran, but by then it was too late for there were only a score left and they followed their bother elves into the maws of the ice worms. The eskimo peasants watched from their village as suprisingly the ice worms showed some intelligence. They gathered up the swords, bows, horses, and silver; at least, that they had not eaten. Perhaps to lure others into the range of their waiting tenticles? The remaining horses would surely be eaten later. The eskimo chief told the villagers not to worry the village was build on rock not tundra and the worms didn't like to come up on rock. -*-*-*-*-*-*- Or if you perfer, the less creative version... The prescence of any unallied units in our demense is strictly at our sufferance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Land Claim Office ===================== IMPORTANT NOTE: A couple of turns ago there was an article in the times ************** questioning the validity of the land claims. (I have just come back from a three week break and have just got round to looking at the game). There have also been many people who think that it is a waste of time, and equaly there are many players who are using it. I'd appreciate your feedback so I can decide the future of the land claims office (if any). I try and add claims into the land claims as soon as I get them, although some may slip by a week, I'm not aware of any longer delays. (If your claim has not gone in then mail me don't just sit there and complain). The land claims is also getting quite big and there have been comments about the size of the times, I would be prepared to set up a mailing list and send the land claims to all players interested and just a small note in the times stating that this service is available. Please mail me at claim@forsyth.demon.co.uk with any comments or queries. The aim of the Land Claim office is to produce a list of usefull and dangerous land for the unsuspecting explorer, it is free and no claim will be enforced by the claims office. The decision to use it is entirely yours and you may claim as much land as you wish, although no claim of the whole world (or a large part of it) will be published. That seems pretty expensive, I know. But it's not much more than what I could sell the wood for on the NPC market, so I can't justify charging much less. I should probably charge more, for the value added by the shipbuilders, much as swords are worth more than iron. I'm not offering a ship size discount because the larger ships are much more useful, given the cargo size scaling effect. Since many customers may not want to lay out all that cash, I'm open to negotiations about barter, in part or in total. In particular, like all non-magic factions, I'm interested in magical gadgets. I'd be willing to value them at Monzon Guild prices, which is a pretty good deal for magical factions, since the price is set by a cartel of every magic faction in the Monzon area. This conflict recently escalated to open warfare with the opening skirmish between the warband of Dirtbag's cousin, Doggybag, and the Hermetic Mage, Paladin. Since then neither Doggybag nor Paladin has been heard from and the Orcs under Dirtbag are gathering for an attack on our stronghold. We have proceeded with Operation Trojan Horse in an attempt to forstall this attack until we can discover the whereabouts of Paladin. Operation Trojan Horse involves creating illness among the Orcish ranks to the extent that violent movement is the last thing they will think about. If it fails it is my contention that our only choice is the absolute obliteration of Dirtbag's forces. This would involve a great deal of energy on our part and might possibly open a rift to the Negative Spiritual plane (the orcish deity being in reality a minor spirit from there). A particularly cloying scent of incense hung in the air. Every member of the Hickory Stick tribe recognized that incense and it's presence here meant only one thing. Snippy nervously peeked into the room and her fears were realized. Facing Dirtbag over the bound body of the snoop sent into the camp of the 'Erminic O'der were four Beloved of Gdunbar (ed. priests). She wanted to duck back and go hide in the lower parts of the stone pile but she wasn't quick enough. "High Gen'rel Snippy! Gets ins here, da Beloved needs talks to you," Dirtbag grated. The tension between Dirtbag and the priests was evident as Snippy slipped into the room. She'd heard rumours - rumours she had publicly ignored but privately worried about - about the growing rift between the self-proclaimed "Voice of Gdunbar" and the Beloved. The four priests turned to face Snippy. Each of the four bore some mark of the favour of Gdunbar on their body - a disfigured arm, cleft palate or other deformity. The ritual scarring that each had performed on their own body only increased the unease that any normal orc felt when facing them. The high priest, an albino with strikingly pink eyes, spoke. "Snippy, dids you meet dis Snoopy dat Dirtbag send to snoop on da 'Erminic O'der ? Dids you knows it ?" Snoopy quickly calculated the chances of a lie not being detected by the priests. Since it was rumoured that Gdunbar gave some priests the ability to sense lies, she decided on caution. "Snippy did know dis gnazhki. Snippy not know Snoopy ver' much. No, Snippy not know Snoopy ver' well 'tall." The high priest prodded the bound Snoopy with the staff she clutched in both hands. Snoopy responded with a series of moans and words which were muffled by the rag stuffed in his mouth. "Does it seem diff'rent from when youze knew it ?," the priest asked. Snippy carefully studied Snoopy. "Yup, Snoopy look li'l bit purple from da bruises." The high priest turned to Dirtbag. "See, dis be how doze stinkin' mages works. Dey sends ones of yours snoops backs to you and he be enspelled. Wit'out us Holy Ones, youze not knows whats to do. It be good t'ing dat you sent for the Beloved of Gdunbar." Her voice carried the implication that this represented a small victory in the ongoing battle between the two. Turning to the three other Beloved, she directed them to set up the equipment that had been carried into the room. To Dirtbag and Snippy, she said, "Leave! Weze must ex'cise da spell from dis gnazhki and youze two woulds disrupt da work." Hearing this pronouncement, Snoopy attempted to crawl and lurch his bound body towards the door. The largest Beloved, a hulking orc with a cleft palate, easily picked up the bound Snoopy and began to tie him into the torture device being assembled by the other two. Having been told stories since infancy of the exorcism rituals of the Beloved, both Snippy and Dirtbag paled and left the room. ******** Snippy and Dirtbag had been standing on the balcony of the stone pile since early morning. They had each risen from their respective piles of sleeping furs at dawn. No orc had slept well the previous night. Snoopy's screams had started within five minutes of the ritual beginning. The intensity and frequency of the screams had varied during the night, not allowing the unwilling audience to grow accustomed to the sounds. Even the normally stupid and insensitive elves were unsettled this morning. Finally, at dawn, the screams had changed. There no longer seemed to be any intelligence in the sounds, as if the Beloved were torturing an animal or elf rather than an orc. Ominously, the screams had stopped about thiry minutes before. The sounds of footsteps in the passage behind them caused both orcs to turn. The smallest Beloved gestured to them, "Come. Da snoop be done." He lay, a crumpled mass of battered flesh, in a slowly spreading pool of blood and other body fluids. Mr. Lunchnick's lessons were subtle but vital. Sometimes he would spend an eternity to accomplish the smallest task, but when he was done I could see that the effort had not been wasted. Usually I completely missed the point on the first try - I was not paying attention until I knew the value of the lesson. The most important lesson I had learned was that there were no invaluble lessons. Finally I planned the heist on my own. I conferred with Mr. Lunchnick on all of the details, but he made no comment, only grunting with approval on occasion. I tried to confuse him by seeming to choose a target at random, but he could see through my reasoning all too easily. I think it amused him, but I'm not really sure. Now I was waiting in the woods along the path to Monzon. It was a well traveled path, mostly by troops. Fighting in the region had been bitter, and promised to continue. We were only plucking a little of the spoils of war - not so much that anyone would notice, but plenty for us. And with each theft we grew a little stronger, a little bolder... For the past 2 turns we have been involved in a brief (and for us, fruitful) war with the Thakram Miles Exploration Company. We are at war because he laid claim to a range of hexes south of Berriedale and Jervbygd (both in the Jaca region) and in the February Times indicated that there was no point in other factions following him as there was no land beyond that. We knew differently then and took steps to insure future access to the regions he was trying to close off. In the process we discovered that he was claiming these hexes with units of 1 and 2 troops. An empty threat is no threat so we attacked. Since then we have gained the following hexes and we intend to keep them: (42,32) ; (41,32) ; and (40,32). This last hex is of great concern to the TME faction and his alliance. Last turn he had as is his wont, 1 soldier on guard and nothing else in the hex. We had one stealth unit in the hex. We did what we thought was reasonable, fearing quick reinforcement into a valuable hex, specifically we attempted an ASSASINATION so that we could advance troops into the hex unmolested. The assasination failed because the attacker had no combat skill. However, we did gain the hex and we were very much surprised when he changed his single combat troop to guard 0 from guard 1. We walked in unchallenged. In retrospect this might have been a poor decision given all the miscommunication abaout a possible Assassin's Guild, but it is a past decision.
