In the early to mid 1980's, all of the games I played had one week
turnaround times. These days, most of the PBEM games I play have one
week turnaround times.

It is true that, other than Diplomacy, you won't find many PBEM games
with more than one week turnaround. But a one-week turnaround time in
a PBEM game is about the same as a 3-week turnaround time in a
snail-mail game, if you're writing letters to your allies. So I don't
think you're that bad off if your problem was waiting for snail mail
to arrive. If you simply don't have time to work on a game very often,
then yeah, you're screwed. But I think that you're then a rare
creature. If not, convince some moderators to introduce long-deadline
games... or form your own on the Diplomacy Judges.
