If you are going to pick up a shield, then do it for defense.  This is my
personal bias.  I've been hit by every type of shield and the spiked
shield doesn't appear much more effective in doing damage.  So, I would
choose medium shield over spiked shield.  I would also start with the
shield over the sword.  Shield wsp are best gained when everyone else is
your weapon level.  If you pick it up later, then you will have trouble
gaining shield wsp while defending against lvl 5 weapons (i've tried this).
You can easily win with shields early.

Now, since swords are good parrying weapons and you won't be using it as
such, why not pick up a weapon good at short and medium ranges?  Flail,
Warhammer, Club?

IMHO, yes and no.  Humans can best absorb the cost of 5 lost stats.
Later, you can swing a lot with a weapon in either hand, but YOU want a
shield in one hand.  So, for your design...no.
