JOIN THE OFFICER'S CLUB From: lrt10398@rpool7.rus.uni-stuttgart.de (Jens Niemann) Date: Fri, 06 Oct 1995 00:00:00 +0000 What we play: We play historical campaigns from the middle ages to modern times. There are usually two sides (sometimes more). The players are grouped in two teams, one team for each side. Every player has a function within its team. One may act as the supreme commander while others can be assigned to posts such as army commander, air force or naval commander or chief of special operations. How we play: The games are a mixture of roleplaying and wargaming. Role play is essential. If you don't behave like a real Officer would act in the real campaign, the game administrator will punish you with a bad COF (commanding officer factor, a measure of efficiency of a commander. This modification applies whenever your actions of play are evaluated). You will also get less respect from your teammates, especially senior players. What system we play: The wargame mechanics do not follow any specific "game" rules. The rule of this game is reality. If any, then the "Kriegsspiel" rules which were developed by the German general staff in the mid-nineteenth century apply. Knowledge of these are, however, not necessary to play the game. You may find them in the literature listed in the "Stabsblatt", the official OC magazine. What you need: Essential is common sense and some military knowledge, be it from books or personal experience. Very useful indeed are geographic and map reading abilities, as almost all the military planning is conducted over your strategic maps. Other qualifying characteristics are: honesty, loyalty, honour, courage and valour - in short - any good soldier's abilities. So, it is generally recommended rather to grown-up players than to younger ones but, well, if you think you're a man... (in the German team, you can still serve in the Volkssturm) What it costs: Membership and play is not for free. The game administrator has costs to bear and puts much of his free time into running the game. The fees are not really a payment for the work of the administrator. The cost of DM 5,- (approx. US$ 3,30) per two-week turn is to keep the administrator away from the ruin zone. JOIN NOW: The current campaign runs from 15 Oct. 1944 to 15 Jan 1945 on the western front, Europe. Seven turns are played to date. The German team needs about five new players to fill their ranks. Available positions are army, army group and air force high commands. The Germans are about to prepare the Ardennen offensive so this is a very interesting period for the players on this side. Who to contact: To join the Officer's Club, you have to write to the game administrator Thomas Kolley. To join a team, you must pay a turn fee in advance to him and opt for a position. You should also contact the teamchef of the team you want to join and give him some personal details of you. This will help you in getting the right position within your team and integrate you into it at the very commencement of your taking over of that position. Disclaimer: Neither this game, nor the administrator, nor the players of this game intend to glorify war, militarism or any life- despising ideologies of the past and present.
