Quest Digest 20/10/95 From: ">>-Josh->" <J.P.Gallagher@durham.ac.uk> Date: Fri, 20 Oct 1995 00:00:00 +0000 ___ _ / _ \ | | Quest Digest, 20th October, 1995 | |_| |UEST__| |IGEST A Friday that isn't a 13th \__ | / _ | | |_ | |_| | An e-mail discussion forum for the fantasy |_ / \___/ play by mail game; "Quest". Compiled by Josh Gallagher. J.P.Gallagher@durham.ac.uk o This isn't one of those automatic list thingies, so could all articles be sent clearly marked with paragraphs initalled to me. o If you want off the list, just say! No hassle, no pressure. o All material here is the exclusive property of the author and may not be used elsewhere without their permission. o For answers to specific Quest-related questions, you may want to get in touch with the Quest Helpline; queries sent to quest-help@kokodan.vivi.com will be sent to a panel of experienced Quest players, who will endeavour to answer your problems quickly. Thanks to Bruce Cota for his help. ___ / _ \ Okay, so there are new improvements to the game... Does | __/DITORIAL anyone have a list of the planned improvements? Does \___| anyone know when horses are coming about? And a FOLLOW ROAD ORDER. I mention that last one because I find myself in the ideal place to use it; a mountain pass where I can't see too far ahead, and yet a road runs through it. Without following the road I risk becoming lost in the rocks! Surely it can't be that difficult to implement? Anyway, enough of personal gripes.... just had to say it before we move on to.... _ / \ Today we have: some comments on new spells; / /_\ RTICLES ressurection and stone to flesh, comments on the B99 / ___ \ order, a description of a rather alarming battle, /_/ \_\ and a gripe about SAE's. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 16 Oct 1995 16:15:18 GMT From: editor@elbon.demon.co.uk (Paul Noble) PN> Howdy do Josh! JPG> Quite well, thanks. :) PN> Resurrect and stone to flesh huh? I wonder how much they'll cost, do you think that since they are actually implementing these within a couple of months that petrified PCs will become items? Or that only the original party can stone to flesh the stoned member, does the stoned char act like a memebr with PETRIFIED after his name, or is he a item that another one carries, like: Akkkman is carrying Zeths body, and it's bloody heavy! PN> How are they to do the resurect, again it has the problems with keeping a record of the character somewhere, can voided and engulfed characters be brought back from the void? Interesting. PN> I had my 18 turn old group in G9 after it's first TQ, a Valkyrie! (720 each so thats 180gp per char I think) they are a big Baldor group (by choice and roleplay!) and they went out to do this Valkyrie but on the way they ran through a Water Elemental! The Welly hit the group pretty much every round (seriously wounding the EM who had 23HP) but we lost no-one, I put this down to the fact that I used a Call Spirit and this is why the EM didn't die (Question one: how much damage is a 'Seriously wounded'?). But after that they went on to the Valkyrie but ran away. I then did 2 101s and had only 1 injured, this guy was healed completely through the second fights magic phase, but we ran away as our casualties were to high! If that is so, how come I could Engage them! Is this what happens when you face a monster too tough for the group? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 17 Oct 95 09:15:30 BST From: Phill Coleman <colemanp@cs.man.ac.uk> PJC > In reply to thomas@enterprise.bt.co.uk (Roy Thomas) regarding the group discount for training, I've had that a few times, and then again when I was low on money, they decided not to give a discount :-( I'd guess that it was random. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 17 Oct 1995 13:16:25 +0100 (BST) From: "C.H.E.B." <ctc@coventry.ac.uk> On Mon, 16 Oct 1995, >>-Josh-> wrote: > this before, but wouldn't it be useful for student players > to have an address that KJC use in term time and an address they use in > holidays? I spent the summer in Kent and had no difficulty in changing the address from Cov to Kent and back again. JPG> Um, yeah, well... I just tend to forget, and then it all cocks up... like this time around. > From: thomas@enterprise.bt.co.uk (Roy Thomas) > Something interesting happened to me the recently. > When I bought strength for my whole group at once, > 'the shop was offering a 10% discount for large parties such as ours', > and the transaction only cost 3375. Not bad really especially given > Could this be a new program update? CTC> No - it's been like that for ages and I hope it stays that way; weapon skill is expensive! I have never done a B99 without getting a discount. > > JN> I was just wondering about those toughened monsters out there - are CTC> One of my G7 groups just went 22 rounds with 8 Monks of Ythcal. I walked into the square where they were and was attacked - in 15 rounds of combat, I lost a character and didn't hit them once in melee. I have ACEs and Expert on all non-mages with 8-10 ACs - oh, and +3 swords/axes. In the second attack (where I engaged them), it took six rounds of combat, no hits on my part again. The only time I hit one of them was when I Black Voided one of them in each attack - they walked away with six lightly wounded after the second fight. I think I was lucky; with a 40% retreat factor, I lost 313 health. JPG> This was the alarming battle I was referring to... Perhaps magical armour would help? Just a thought... or some way of specifying that when you meet with Monks of Ythcal, you teleport III them away. :) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Neil Benson <N.A.BENSON@sms.ed.ac.uk> To: ">>-Josh->" <J.P.Gallagher@dur.ac.uk> NB> Have you noticed how more and more players are asking for SAEs before they'll send you a reply? If these people can't afford to write to you, why should you pay twice so that you can receive a reply? It just doesn't figure. NB> Granted, most of these 'gansters' are people with a high volume mail box: newsletter editors, alliance leaders, article submitters in newsletters, and FAQ suppliers. But if they can't afford to offer their services for free then they shouldn't offer their services. PBM is a hobby. You shouldn't expect people to pay for your postage. NB> I don't play Quest any more. But I submitted four pages to a newsletter editor (and a similar amount previously). I asked for a copy of the final version of the newsletter once it was printed, so that I could see my work (and the work of all the other submitters) in the final version. After many hours work, my expenses of printing, scanning and photcopying to produce the pages, I was told a reply would cost an SAE! Bloody cheek. Effectively, I have earned the editor have a free turn (four out of eight pages were mine), and I was asked for an SAE so that I could see my work in print. I say NO! NB> If there are newsletter editors out there who would like four pages each month for their newsletter then just ask. Four pages, of in-character chat, decorated and illustrated - yours for just a gratis copy of the final version that KJC send out. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- JPG> Okay, that's the lot... Phill Coleman suggested I make the list visible on the top every now and again, as I used to. I had a think about this, and I decided that if what I would do is just send out the list to anyone who requests it, as opposed to putting it back on the top. In case you're wondering what the use of this is, you get to see the email addresses of lots of other quest players, which you don't get at the moment. JPG> After this I will also send out the List Of Questers, which must be almost entirely out of date. When I send it out, any corrections made should be sent with the header 'Re: List Of Questers', which can be obtained merely by replying to the email and not changing the header. This will help me when it comes to editting it, as it will redirect them all. Thanks... Bye for now...
