New owner for US Flagship From: 76276.2147@compuserve.com (Nicky Palmer) Date: Sun, 05 Nov 1995 00:00:00 +0000 Stirring news! I'm putting this press release up in various electronic places... NEW PATHS FOR AMERICAN FLAGSHIP Due to pressing personal commitments, Joey Browning has reluctantly decided to resign as editor of US Flagship. I'd like first to say how much I've enjoyed working with him, and wish him every success in all his endeavors in the future. As publisher, I've decided to turn this into an opportunity to do something different. I've gradually become convinced that PBM magazines only prosper if the editor is also the owner. This is why Flagship does well in Europe, as I'm committed enough to stay up late at night, lend it money, and do whatever it takes to make *my* magazine the best. It's not reasonable to expect the same from a US editor working for $125 an issue. Bob McLain's recovery from last year's illness and increasing involvement in Flagship - such as the two highest-rated features in the magazine, Helium Jungle and our joint You Rule! diary - prompted the answer. After some of the fastest and friendliest negotiations I've ever had, we have sold the US rights to Bob. This means: a) After a short transition period in which Bob will edit the magazine for us, he will take full control, starting with issue 60 or 61. The change wil be marked symbolically by a change of name to AMERICAN FLAGSHIP: this will cover the USA, Canada and Mexico. From that moment on, Bob has all rights and responsibilities, and there will be no legal or formal connection with Astro- Sprint Ltd, the company through which I run Flagship in the rest of the world. The original Flagship will revert to a single edition focusing on European and email games: Flagship and AMERICAN FLAGSHIP will have no responsibility for each other's contents or liabilities. b) All subscriptions will be honored by Bob. If you make a subscription renewal invitation during the transition, you can be sure that your sub will be transferred with everyone else's. c) The two magazines will continue to cooperate closely, sharing articles of interest to both our readerships (such as the joint YR! diary). I will be writing a guest column, commenting frankly on the hobby and indeed on AMERICAN FLAGSHIP. d) All contributions, subscriptions and correspondence should now be sent to Bob at the masthead address/phone/email. Advertising invoices will still be sent by our UK office for payment to them, until the changeover. e) Interested readers are more than welcome to subscribe to both magazines, though with separate administration we drop the reciprocal discounts. If you have questions, you can email me: 76276.2147@compuserve.com or you can email Bob McLain: flagship@tightbeam.com We believe that the new arrangement will deliver the best of both worlds: a committed editor-owner in the United States, with the best of Flagship's qualities (good writing, independent news reports) reinforced by a solid American base. We hope that you'll be as excited by it as we are. NICKY PALMER PS I'm away Saturday and Sunday, will respond to all the messages Monday! Up
