Exactly like Geoff said, "This seems to be an extra complication." Now if you want terrain to affect combat do what every other war type game does and give the defender a bonus depending on the terrain type. Traditionally the defense bonus would be something like plains little or no defense bonus, forest/jungle medium bonus, mountain/swamp high bonus. However for atlantis I would think about switching it around some and making the more worthless/low tax terrain types have the best defense bouns (ie tundra) while the giving the high tax regions a poor defense bounses (ie cities and plains). This would be good for game balance as it would make it more difficult for attackers and give more value to those worthless regions that only trade factions would want to be in. As long as we are talking about terrain, why not add HILLS for the HILL dwarfs? One could even add a new race for the hills, Specialized Skills Hobbits* Stealth, Entertainment, Weaponsmith, Crossbow * Hobbits may reach level 4 in Stealth ;), but are limited to combat 1. And as long as I'm talking about races how about adding some Dark Elves. They could reach level 5 in any one skill, cost the same as a leader to buy, but maintenace cost is still only 10. ---------------------------------------------------------- From: Michael Omotayo Akinde <strategy@iesd.auc.dk> Date: Thu, 7 Dec 1995 19:59:25 +0100 Subject: Re: Atlantis: terrain > Well my 2 cents on region trained troops. Cute. :-) Though Crossbow and weaponsmiths for hobbits? I`d say Stealth 4 and Level 1 in everything else. ;-) > And as long as I'm talking about races how about adding some Dark Elves. > They could reach level 5 in any one skill, cost the same as a leader > to buy, but maintenace cost is still only 10. Hmm - don't you think that's a bit extreme? What's the use of Orcs and Hobbits, then? IMO, it would be a mistake to make any race which can reach more than Level 2 in everything. My suggestion: Dark Elves Stealth, Weaponsmith, Combat, Longbow Regards, The Legate ---------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 8 Dec 1995 12:03:40 +1100 (EST) From: David Henley <rhenley@st.nepean.uws.edu.au> Subject: Re: Atlantis: terrain how about dark elves level 4 in any one skill except for combat and level 1 in everthing else.exclude stealth ifhobits included H H EEEE NN N L EEEE Y Y ********************************* H H E N N N L E Y Y * Address all email to * HHHHH EEEE N N N L EEEE Y * * H H E N N N L E Y * David Henley at * H H EEEE N NN LLLLL EEEE Y * rhenley@st.nepean.uws.edu.au * ********************************* if your loooking for the solution then your part of the problem if one cannot command attention by one's admirable qualites at least one can be a nuisance ---------------------------------------------------------- From: Michael Omotayo Akinde <strategy@iesd.auc.dk> Date: Fri, 8 Dec 1995 02:14:02 +0100 Subject: Re: Atlantis: terrain > how about dark elves level 4 in any one skill except for combat and level > 1 in everthing else.exclude stealth if hobbits included Of course, if Dark elves are as rare as darkmen are, who'dit might add an extra dimension if they're better than the average unit. Hmm - isn't there something about dark-elves hating all other races - maybe that's the reason we don't see them in Atlantis. :-) Though I find the idea of High Elves fighting in the same army as orcs rather strange too. ;-) Regards, The Legate ---------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 07 Dec 1995 20:01:44 -0600 (CST) From: ThorC@UH.EDU (Thor Christensen) Subject: Re: Atlantis: terrain Something that Michael Omatayo wrote rang true with me- the fact that elves and orcs could be found in the same army - if not the same unit - was pretty strange and if you are considering making each race have a bonus of some sort in their home turf, why not consider the possibility of making it easier to purchase similar kinds of forces with an existing unit. An example might be that if you have a unit of hill dwarves it might be easier for them to recruit other hill dwarves - i.e. buy hill dwarf troops. Perhaps a discount? Thor Christensen Houston, TX.
