Volume 4 April 96 ========================================================================== === INTERSTELLAR NEWS BRIEFS DATELINE Castor: The sudden appearance of several major imperial naval fleets around Themthelgia II on day 9 caused quite a stir among the native Mechbot inhabitants. According to the Mechbot leaders, there is a local plague that has caused the imperials to blockade several worlds in The Colonies, including Vega and Rigel. "We, however, are quite immune to disease and see no logical reason why we should be blockaded." said EM-KAY-442, a high level Mechbot in their mysterious political structure. No ships are allowed to land on the blockaded planets, but news is sketchy at this time. Scientists currently disagree as to whether the metal drones could actually transmit the strange rumored plague to other beings. "We are concerned, you see, that it can be transmitted through bodily fluids, and Mechbots regularly consume motor oil in their diet." said one biologist. The disease has been shown to live for short periods of time in saliva, urine, dairy products and motor oil. It is not believed to be airborne, but kills 30% of all Brogian victims, and 85% of all others. Reports continue that the plague originated on Legume. DATELINE Polaris: After 17 years, the great Ula Nai has finally published the long awaited conclusion to his vastly popular philosophical trilogy, "The Mantra Of Self Indulgence". The books began spewing out of the presses on day 17, considered a lucky number by Nai. The expectations for this final tome are so high, that the publisher, Kessler & Sons, is printing a billion copies on the first run. This is expected to cause a surplus on the books and periodicals market for some time, since the book has already reached the number 2 spot on the intergalactic bestseller's list. Only Bigelow's Guide To The Core is expected to keep ahead of the work. Nai was interviewed in Jigg Jara before he left for his stellar book signing tour, but he had little to say. "Good-bye, good luck and thanks for all the QPs!" he said. DATELINE Sabik: Over 12,384 precious religious artifacts were nabbed on day 23 from the Berlin Museum Of Natural History. Security ran high and many unsubstantiated rumors abound that over 90% of the artifacts stolen were from the Atria system. So far, no official word has come out as to the value of the booty, but many art experts regard the cache to be assessed at well over three and a half billion QPs on the black market. The museum was insured for only 82% of the missing artifacts. DATELINE Sol: Day 30 brings harsh news to savers, who may have just recently discovered an increased interest rate for withdrawals on personal accounts held with The Imperial Bank. "We had to raise our rates to pay for special military and research projects in... well, it's classified." claimed Wiiliiam Phriit, a Piil and manager for the Sol branch of The Imperial Bank. Rates rose from 2.5% to a whopping 5.0% without any notice to large depositors or, worse, the megacorporate giants, who store literally trillions of QPs with The Imperial Bank. The only megacorporation willing to speak out publicly was Kludge/Trinutriate. A spokesbeing for that company said it would consider withdrawing all of its assets from the bank if the rates didn't come down to a more reasonable amount. Sources indicate that the feeling is mutual among all the other megacorporations. Q&A: "I finally got into my first fight against a pirate ship, and I got my *ss shot off. After drifting through space and finally being rescued, I was informed that I had over 100,000 QPs insurance to spend on a new ship. How did this happen?" - Tom Swift, SR-417. There are two ways to get insurance. One is to join a megacorporation, and the other is to purchase private insurance. They both have advantages and disadvantages, but I highly recommend that you get insurance one way or another. The coverage is usually 70% or better of your ship. Cargoes and items are not covered. ========================================================================== === THE STANDINGS LISTS The following traders have earned a place of exceptional honor and respect by succesfully competing as first-class smugglers.
