If you use Galaxy TV, the program changes the names automatically.  Some game
masters also provide a turn checker which might clue you in that you have
submitted illegal moves (to now non-existant planets).
I think this is often a
desparation measure to buy a little time. In the game I am playing, the player
attempting this is changing the names of planets only slightly: replacing "l"
with"1" or "n" with "m".  Perhaps it worked, he didn't lose any planets last
turn.
