GURPS SPACE FREE PBeM ANNOUNCE From: Ken.Crossman@ualberta.ca (Ken Crossman) Date: Sat, 04 May 1996 00:00:00 +0000 I'm announcing the new PBeM science-fiction role-playing game I'll be running, starting 1 June 1996. This game, called _The Long View_, is based on the premise of a weak human race in a galaxy full of older, more powerful species; the players will assume human characters, and will collectively seek to advance the situation of the human race. The game will run at least for two months, up to a maximum of six months. Game sessions will be held every second day. I am looking for eight to twelve experienced role-players, all of whom must be capable of reading their e-mail daily, and capable of participating in a two-hour IRC gaming session weekly (time and day to be deteremined at convenience of players). The game mechanics for _The Long View_ will be kept deliberately simple. Prospective players will draw up characters in consultation with me, caharacters being complete no later than May 26; these characters will be drawn up using the GURPS system ("Generic Universal Role-Playing System", from Steve Jackson Games) and GURPS Space, with a hundred-point limit. If you do not have GURPS or GURPS Space, I will help you with your character creation. Experience with the GURPS system is not a pre-requisite, but role-playing experience is. During the game, when dice rolls are required, I will roll them and then inform you of the results (the character creation system of GURPS is _not_ dice-based). Experience points will be accumulated during the campaign , and characters will grow in both ability and reputation in the game universe. If characters are killed, the players will inherit the experience points of their previous character to create their new character. The ideal types of characters for this campaign are diplomats, military officers, military technicians, soldiers, explorers and traders. Emphasis will be placed upon the role-playing aspects of the game, rather than upon more conventional hack-and-slash headcounting. If you love plot complexity, this game's for you. Encounters with aliens will be both diplomatic and military; and choices made during the earlier portions of the campaign will have efects on the circumstances the characters (and the humans of the game universe) will face later in the campaign. I will download a copy of the galaxy description to you before you make up your characters.
