Compiled by Josh Gallagher. J.P.Gallagher@durham.ac.uk o This isn't one of those automatic list thingies, so could all articles be sent clearly marked with paragraphs initialled to me. o If you want off the list, just say! No hassle, no pressure. o All material here is the exclusive property of the author and may not be used elsewhere without their permission. ___ / _ \ This is me revising for those finals. It must be, because | __/DITORIAL I'm only on the net in the mornings now. Anyway, thanks \___| again to all those who sent stuff in. I had enough to send something out near the end of last week, but decided to try and keep it roughly weekly. This week we have actual sightings of undead, albeit underground, and further talk on the Monks amongst other topics. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Jonas Nelson, KTH" <NELSON@l.kth.se> Date: Wed, 8 May 1996 11:48:05 +0100 JN> Terry Preece wrote: > TP> Someone asked how to kill Monks after hearing about the battering > a group took in game 6. JN> No, but you were not in game 6, which is (together with game 9) the most under-developed game by far. There are no super-groups, and my group (130+ turns) has not even got a decent mage yet! Engulfing Globe? No way! Game 6 is (to my knowledge) much harder than many other games - when I met five Monks of Sundonak I was lucky to have a low retreat factor, since I never got one single hit on them! (despite good fighters and some VERY good priests...) JN> Now, does anyone know why game 6 is so under-developed? Or rather - it is the way Quest ought to be: It is almost impossible to create power-groups, you almost never succeed in robbery, and I have yet to see a well-paid Temple Quest. Or have I just been unlucky (for 130 turns...)? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 8 May 1996 12:03:37 +0100 (BST) From: Allan Hooper <A.O.Hooper@herts.ac.uk> AH> Its amazing what you can find to waste time instead of revision .... One which goes like a magic dart and the other like a magic blast "The Monks cast a spell seriously wounding us." Unfortunatly these attacks are pretty weak as I recieved only 12 lightly hurts for a total of about 15-20 damage from the magic blast. > DR> Remember: The beatings will continue until morale improves. They were good for exp and carry around a ton of gold, unless you cast Kill Undead on them which, for some reason, meant you got no treasure?!? Perhaps Garthrana thinks money is the root of all evil a wipes that out too. I've noticed this too with NPC's. If you kill them in the spell round you get nowt. However when (if as NPC tend to run away) you kill them in missile/melee some flukey gits have got up to 2000gp's from them. > DR> G14 has [a history] now. AH> Any chance of someone sending me it? The same goes for the G3 history too if anyones got it. That is since KJC don't seem to send them to existing players. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 8 May 1996 23:07:01 +0100 From: Mark Jones <mark@samlet.demon.co.uk> (JPG> Mark, you wanted to know if you'd presented your additions correctly... well, maybe if your name was 'Psepha'... ;) >About preset alliances: >What is this? Psepha replies : Also what happened to indpendance. The beauty of the current system allows you to join or leave alliances as you like. Some older groups prefer to act on their own (especially those with BAD experiences at the hands of unfriendly spies). >PB>There are so many NA groups around at the moment, that it is hard >to pick a fight, even around a city! Even though some groups over 20 >turns old claim they just want to explore and map (yeah, great fun), >they must be braindead if they wish to make there explorations in a >wild land full of dangerous monsters and violent bands of warriors. Psepha replies : Except they know that by waving the white NA flag they cannot be attacked by said violent bands (very true to life)(just like dragons) Anyway, I'm just cheesed off 'cos one of KJC's new tougher type Jinxs' has just cost my 158 turn old group three characters (sob :-() >MS> My question is, do you know how to kill monks? Someone else I know >has complained about similar (though not quite as devastating) results >with Monks of Sundonak. Psepha replies : The best known method of dealing with these is to keep your retreat factor as normal and hit them with multiple Call Monster/ Wrath of Sundonak spells engaging five times should do the trick (hey it worked in G.7) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 8 May 1996 19:41:08 +0100 From: Paul Noble <editor@elbon.demon.co.uk> >DJ> Best paid Temple Quests to date - 2880gp each for 15 characters for a > 16 sector Valkyrie and 2160gp each for 15 characters for a 12 sector > Water Elemental. I feel sorry for the >remaining 8 groups PN> 8 groups! Blimey, not many at all, I'd have thought that there were more - does this include groups on holiday? I know of 2 100+ groups on holiday at the moment. PN> Are you sure that Kevin would tell a notorious player killing alliance the real figure of how many players ain't NA (I wonder how much money BKA has put out of G14). Also does this count everything over 50 or everything from 50 - 100, I know of at least 4 100 + groups which are not NA. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 9 May 96 08:30:33 EST From: Mike Summerfield <MSUMMERF%ESOC.bitnet@listserv.gmd.de> >pjc> Re undead - Do they exist? MDS> Whilst exploring the Tomb of Malice in game 5 I encountered a group of Ghouls, which I totally destroyed, but be warned they can paralyse your characters. I also encountered a Shadow, which was a real b$%t@#d. We didn't hit it once in melee, even after casting flame and our spell round only made it angry. I am not completely sure, but I would say these must be classed as undead creatures. If you want the opportunity to use the spells designed for undead creatures you will have to do underground. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Sinclair James Manson <9503290m@student.gla.ac.uk> Date: Thu, 9 May 1996 09:54:06 +0000 SM>There's a history for Game 14. The reason this was suggested (for an e-mail oriented game) was to persuade characters to join alliances. In the game in which myself and Paul Madden (who came up with the idea - blame him *grin*) play, many players do not seem to be interested in joining alliances (Philip, you were the exception to this!). So preset alliances were suggested as a way of eliciting greater participation on the player's behalf. It would also hopefully prevent a BKA style alliance take over of a game. JPG> Just thought I'd attempt to clear that point up; I'd meant to say something about it a while ago, but it slipped my mind. Hopefully a repeat performance of my forgetfulness won't happen in tomorrow's exam.... JPG> Happy Questing folks.... >>-Josh-> "You can't always get what you want" - Rolling Stones Up
