I find routes very useful for colonists and empty ships, but you must turn
them off when you don't want them. If you have a cargo ship that you don't
want to use the route you also have to turn off the route or send the
ship somewhere.

With routes a ship can load colonists, fly through hyperspace, unload at the
other end AND BE UPGRADED all in one turn.

You can also use routes to have colonists from several planets to be pooled
into one planet to be transported speedily by a large cargo ship to distant
parts of your empire. (time saving)
