Hmmm!  I have been playing Galaxy for awhile and I always use routes and
the AUTOUNLOAD option.  Routes are very useful in the early Galaxy game because
they force unloading of cargo on the turn in which ships arrive.  So you gain
one turn's growth.  Not much you may say, but if you meet someone who doesn't
use routes at the same planet then guess who wins? :-)  Sure you do have to be
careful when your empire gets big, but isn't that true about all orders?
Occasionally in exceptional circumstances I switch AUTOUNLOAD off for 1 or 2
turns.

There are two main drawbacks with routes and AUTOUNLOAD:-

1.  If you are someone who fits battleships with 1 cargo then you'll have
trouble keeping them on station at a world using routes.

2.  If you want ships to pass through a world en route to another one then
you're in trouble if the stop off is not full of population and industry.

I am fascinated by Lars original problem and would love to see some (heavily
disguised to protect the innocent!) evidence.  Would that be possible?
