New Space Strategy Game: BURNING WORLDS From: Keary Phillips <gravwell@grav-well.com> Date: Wed, 03 Jul 1996 00:00:00 +0000 NEW GAME: BURNING WORLDS Hello Fellow PBeMers, My name is Keary Phillips and am nearly finished programming a graphics based space strategy game that has both bi-weekly email turns and real-time email based combat. It's called BURNING WORLDS and its sorta like VGA Planets, Stars!, and Pollux but way different. (Arent' they all?) You can see some full size screen shots (about 40K gifs) or download a working demo at http://www.grav-well.com/ . (The demo will be available after July 4th.) Each of the space strategy games do different things well and different people want different things so here's one that I hope a lot of people will like because it does a ton of things totally different. This is NOT a replacement for any of them because Burning Worlds IS different and isn't trying to copy them. How is it different? Well . . . What it's got: Trade - You need money and resources to build a new galaxy order. (10 items) Diplomacy - You have to negociate trade with planets, not just BURN them. Combat - Lots'o combat with sound effects 'cause sometimes you gotta BURN them worlds. MIDI music - You can even set the MIDI tunes yourself. Animated Fleet combat - (NOT cheesy. See the demo.) Animated World combat - (NOT cheesy. Not is this demo.) Turn-based Economies - Sent twice a week. (6 month game time.) (sent by email.) Relatively Real-time Fleet combat - Sent any time, day or night with quick automated response. (sent by email) Fleets - Up to 24 ships per fleet and 50 fleets per star system. Ship Formations - You must arrange the ship's formations on a special fleet map. Fleet, Ship, Troop Order - There is a complex set of order for all of these.(Over 40 for fleets.) Ship Design - Complex ship design and refit during the game. Alliance Teams - 3-6 players per team with 4-6 teams per game. Alliance Goals - Choose the type of new galactic government your team will build. (5 types) Eight Races - Not randomly generated but fleshed out with background. History - There is a complex history to the game. World Info - Government types, military attitudes, legal attitudes, race pics, enviro pics. Research - 9 areas plus an X-Projects group for unsual items not in the technology tree. Spies - used to wage economic and political warfare. Scouts - used to establish new jump links between worlds. PKZip - A PKZip compliant zipper for making files smaller. MIME - Will attach the zipped files to an automatically created email file. Auto Emailer - This is a POP3/SMTP compliant emailer. Role-playing - players are welcome to help flesh out the universe, races, worlds, and history. What it ain't got: NO boring Windows inteface - Only a cool interface. (See the demo.) NO Window 3.1 version - Sorry, maybe in a few months in 640x480 mode for those with laptops. NO colonization - All worlds are already colonized. NO truck drivers - All intersteller trade is done automatically based on transport ship networks. NO Visual Basic stuff, only C++ and Assembly code for speed. System Requirments: OS: Windows 95 (Windows NT also seems to work) Memory: 8 MB Resolution: 800x600 Colors: 256 colors or greater Needed: mouse Suggested: sound card, POP3/SMTP email account used by most Internet providers If you order it before July 4th you pay only $24 (saving $10) and you can play TWO complete beginners games (4 alliances of 3 players with more ships than nomal) which each last about 2-3 months. The games begins in mid-July. Stay tuned.
