This will destroy your current faction, and begin a brand new faction for you. Now, the family will spread. Others should beware ! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Efficient Empire (119): SHOULD GATE NUMBERS BE PUBLICIZED? The following article continues the discussion on gate numbers from previous issues of the times. I feel that the advantages of revealing the gate number I have jumped to outweigh the disadvantages, some disagree. The downside argument is that knowing my gate number an aggressive alliance can jump to it and slaughter me. This argument rests on three assumptions: 1. Aggressive "Conquer the World" alliances exist. 2. They will gate lore massive forces to a known gate. 3. They will defeat whatever they find when they arrive. The first assumption is indisputably true. The second assumption may be true, but would require that a non optimal strategy be followed, not the best plan for a group out to conquer the world. Assuming for now that the third assumption is also true, the best case "gate attack" scenario plays out as follows: 1. Gate Lore aggressors arrive. 2. Defending forces slaughtered, including defending forces in adjacent hexes. 3. Defenders in hexes 2 or more away, pillage and run but are ultimately hunted down and exterminated. The reason that this is a non optimal strategy for the aggressors, is that other competing "Conquer the world" alliances can use their gate lore mages to seek out unoccupied gates. The first strategy uses N mages to target one gate with combat forces. The competing strategy sends development forces to N different gates. Some of these N gates may be occupied, but the forces that arrive at unclaimed gates can grow rapidly without the distraction of pillaged hexes and chasing down surviving defenders. An alliance following the second strategy will grow much more than one following the first strategy, and may even be able to capitalize on the bad press generated to recruit new allies (perhaps even mage restarts). This other alliance will end up more powerful than the first due to superior growth strategy. The third assumption is also not a given. "Gate Lore II" may not be available until higher levels of study, and/or it may not have the capacity to move large numbers of troops. It has also been alleged in the times that forces may be "lost in the void" when gate jumping, which could make moving high value forces dangerous. If a key group (tacticians, mages) gets lost the battle may easily be lost. The defender also has a few advantages against an aggressor. The defenders know the terrain. Aggressors who arrive planning on summoning "tree men" in a forest, could have a nasty surprise when they find themselves surrounded by "swamp men" in a swamp, or vice versa. The defenders forces can also be mounted, while aggressor forces probably won't have the capacity to move horses due to their weight. In summary, I may indeed regret publicizing my gate, but it will take an alliance willing to follow a non optimal strategy and take risks by making a "blind" attack through a gate.
