Smuggler's Run GNS for 9609.22 From: dvistas@aol.com (D Vistas) Date: Mon, 23 Sep 1996 00:00:00 +0000 ------- T H E G A L A C T I C N E W S W I R E S E R V I C E ------- The Official Smuggler's Run News Service. Volume 4 Week 9609.22 ========================================================================== === INTERSTELLAR NEWS BRIEFS DATELINE Kochab, September 17 - The Interstellar Trader's Union and The Colonies filed an official protest with The Empire regarding the Imperial invasion of the planet Draak. So far, casualties have not been too bad, with less that 50,000 Geckos killed by Imperial troops. "Over half of the reported casualties were by accident.", said Colonel Vic Drastic, officer in charge of security on Draak. "A recent purchase of 1,800 slightly used laser rifles from a small weapons firm on Macovia proved to be an unwise decision.", he claimed. Armed soldiers continue to patrol the streets of the Gecko homeworld, and both the I.T.U. and numerous colonial planets are declaring foul play. Threats by both major political forces to wage war against The Empire if they do not restore the original government seem to fall on deaf ears. Meanwhile, skirmishes continue to break out on many planets among protesters and Imperial soldiers. DATELINE Cor-Caroli, September 19 - Macovian technology plummets and the high tech sector is sabotaged by unknown forces. Although injuries were few, the devastation has affected the entire planet's economy. Investigators from the local government say that many clues lead to the Alien Liberation Front. "There are almost too many clues, actually.", said a Macovian spokesman. Many citizens speculate that The Empire is behind the attack, although there is no evidence to back up such allegations. Factories and trade centers were closed and scanned for explosives, but none were found. Until more investments are made on the planet, Macovia will rely heavily on imports for technological goods. DATELINE Earth, September 22 - Members of the Interstellar Trader's Union were surprised to learn that the original voting system, based on worth, was being replaced with a "One member, one vote" policy. The many smaller traders complained that too much power was in the hands of the rich, so I.T.U. leaders amended the union constitution to allow for the new rule. "One member, one vote allows for us to truly access what the membership wants, not just a few wealthy merchants. We are, after all, a democratic organization!" said Weemo Dinzy, Terran President of the I.T.U. From here on, each member will get 1 vote in any ballot held, leveling the political playing field. Of course, wealthy traders are still not restricted from buying the votes of those less fortunate members. Public Notice: The following planets are blockaded by Imperial forces: Algolia (Algol) Old New Caledon (Alpheratz) Draak (Kochab) Gnowan (Mizar) Pontus I (Rigel) ========================================================================== === CARGO PRODUCTION AND STOCK INDEX This is current economic data gathered by the vast computer complexes at Megafalagon University on Earth.
