Welcome, as per usual, to all | __/DITORIAL those that have joined us for the first time. To \___| the loyal subjects who have been with the list for longer, I have the apology for tardiness to be made. This issue is two weeks late, a week longer than I predicted, due to the time it took me to find new accomodation. Unfortunately I don't have email access there, so the next issue might well be a little bit late too. On the up side, however, we have a larger volume of contributions for you to read through. So, on with the inclusions; thanks to those of you that sent them in! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 16 Sep 1996 16:47:06 +0200 (MET DST) From: "Stig Norland <Stig Norland"<s496@ii.uib.no> Stig > I have made a win-prog which convert questmap files to BMP. That way you may print out the map with any printers as long as you have a program capable of printing BMP-files. (The Program can enlarge the map and print parts of the map) It will be public as soon as I have made me a HTML-page ( http://www.lstud.ii.uib.no/~s496/ ... coming soon :-) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Ewan Jones <E.F.D.JONES@cranfield.ac.uk> Date: Tue, 17 Sep 1996 09:20:39 +0100 () > So, > what is the ONE MAJOR improvement you would like to see programmed next? EJ Personally i`d like to see a greater variety of quests introduced linked with artifacts that are unique, something such as "seek out the sword of despair" which might be a plus 5 sword or something. > Bruce Yes this does work. I have managed to print > out map files in this manner. It is a little > inconvienient though. EJ I have an excellent mapper programmed by Johan Anderlund, it features colour maps, naming of squares feature, search facilities to search for finding names (useful for library quests), easy printing, dungeon marking and other stuff. Johan is charging 5 for it but it is worth it. If you are a member of Dooooom alliance in game 15 however it is totally free!! If your interested mail me. > JPG> Just before I go, I wouldn't mind a report of both the Leeds pub meet > and the Birmingham one. EJ As I remember it the Birmingham one was a while ago, quite well attented though and not swamped by Celtic supporters this time ! The Leeds one was quite good having the support of Kevin, Steve and Gerry who were all in attendence, several other folk from other quest games turned up including lots of 14 and 13 players and games 10, 15, 16, 6 and a few others being represented. The hotel turned out to be again an excellent location for a pubmeet and the quest players dominated the bar all day !! No other games were represented unfortunately but Kevin and Steve were there to offer excuses, ahem, developments in quest programming. All in all, a good pubmeet, roll on Blackpool. > JPG> One last thing; is the limit for alliance transfer of money to groups set > at 15,000? EJ You can only transfer 15,000 gold at a time to any one group. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 21 Sep 1996 05:15:20 -0400 From: Skeltem@aol.com >>JPG>So, what is the ONE MAJOR improvement you would like to see programmed next? >> PK> It would take some time to list the improvements I'd like to see. So I want to cut things down: *I* want more opportunity for actual roleplaying. PK> As we are now founding an OA, Quest has become like a business simulation for me. Also the impact of the OAs was an improvement for Powergamers not Roleplayers. I think characters should be more detailed for a better identification with them. OK, if you own some fantasy, you can make-believe your characters. But normally the game supports these guys who number their characters by profession (Priest3, you failed to get Ability! BAMM!) and makes them disposable. And with the OAs in short time all Charakters are going to own Axe+3, Armour+3 ... They will all have TO 250 and so on - they will all look the same! The word for this is unformity, I think. This might be desirable for my beloved "Brotherhood"-allies and friends, but I am in an Alliance that favors diversity. PK> Ok, so do something, that Quest will be fun as a roleplaying-game. Please. PK> Oh, and before I will be hunted down like a dog again: The Brotherhood is great! I really do like these pals. They are cute and do have wet noses. IMHO anyone who plays Quest should pay hommage to them, because they are really cool pals. And, Lassies and Laddies, they can bear a grudge for centuries and posess ab-so-lute-ly no humour concerning their mighty, holy, and whatever "Brotherhood". PK>This one's dedicated to Juergen Klein, who made us all look like little children compared to HIS holy insights. Thank you, thank you, thank you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 28 Sep 1996 18:25:39 -0600 (MDT) From: Michael Brassell <mbrassel@nyx10.nyx.net> I've got a copy of another Quest mapping program, but it's only for windows and it's shareware (it costs $10 US for the full version). You can get a copy of it at: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/4267/assist.zip or I can email a copy to anyone who wants it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: <Roy.Thomas@ubs.com> Date: Mon, 30 Sep 96 12:14:17 +0100 > JPG> One last thing; is the limit for alliance transfer of money to > groups set at 15,000? RJT> Yes it is! Worse is that the maximum you can transfer to one group in a single turn week is also 15,000 Gold (I am not too sure about the implementation of this, but it was stated in the rules). RJT> I guess this would be to stop massive transference of gold to gain strength skills (You can only train up a 15 man strong group 5 times a turn by doing this!). RJT> On another note, what is the longest distance required to travel to complete a temple quest? I have seen 25 Sectors which begs the question, why is the distant monster group such a danger to the city? RJT> How do you buy a journey to a town you know from a town you do not know the market of? If a group started from town A and in one turn, bought a journey to town B, how do they get back in the same turn. Since they do not know the market of town B, they do not know what the journey number is! There does not seem to be a consistent numbering convention here! Surely they should be able to go around town and ask everyone they meet if they sell journeys to town A. It works if you want to buy an axe from a new town and you have not seen the market place before. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: <Roy.Thomas@ubs.com> Date: Wed, 2 Oct 96 10:57:02 +0100 RJT> My group recently fought 4 Monks of Molwahna. They didn't get a single melee hit! Despite attacking for 14 rounds on the first engage. The monks continued to hit my group once per round, inflicting about 1 point of health loss each time (all got healed before the second round though). Three of the monks fell to death spells, and the remaining monk was still not scared!! The last engage with the remaining monk lasted about 4 rounds with it hitting my group once per round. My group got no hits in! Are they incredibly agile or something? RJT> What I do not understand is how you are meant to kill them if you do not have powerful mages! My group has fighters with 100% Melee skill, 64 SK increased further by strength miracles wielding +3 Axes and protected by +3 Armour! If they cannot even get a hit in, how can you hope to kill a monk? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: <stuart_2@tds.bt.co.uk> Date: Wed, 2 Oct 1996 14:36:32 +0000 SL> My party is now fighting another Jinx (we just don't know when to stop!). However, the party has no death spells (yet!) and hence has been using Call Monster and Ythcals Touch on it. Whilst Call Monster works, Ythcals Touch seems to work only occasionally. This happened last time the party fought a Jinx. Both times the party's alignment couldn't be any closer to Ythcal. Does anybody have any ideas why it hardly ever works? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 3 Oct 1996 11:06:57 +1000 (EST) From: squig@ozemail.com.au (Timmie Steele) TS> If been directed in your direction by Peter Read in the hope that you (or the quest digest) can help with my woes. I'm a Mac using Quest player looking for a mapping program for the Mac (oddly enuff). If you, or anyone else knows where I can obtian one it would be most apreciated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JPG> Lots of talk about mapping programs this time, and quite a few options to pick from, should you require one. I like the concept of keeping a track of names of areas too. I've never used more than a paint program myself, but even _that_ was quite useful. JPG> As for ideas for the next major development, I agree that increasing the role playing in the game is a great idea, but it's not a really definable improvement - in programming terms it hardly constitutes a specification. So to narrow the 'improvements' question down a little bit, what improvements would best make the game better in role playing terms? JPG> Finally, any pub meets down the south east? Let me know!
