I agree with Steve -- it is quite possible to play an excellent
game of Galaxy and never (explicitly) produce MAT.  You will only
be slightly less efficient.

BUT, one does have to pay attention to resurce values for planets.
For instance, at the above mentioned .1 resource planet, the math
is correct, but one just wouldn't produce ships at that planet, one
would use it to produce technology instead.

For anyone but a very experienced Galaxy player in a mid-late game
position, building MAT is usually a waste of time/energy.  You are
better off watching what is built/produced where than trying to
spend the time building & shipping MAT around.  Remember that MAT
is a REALLY bulky cargo to ship around.

I have built and shipped MAT upon occasion, but only with fairly
mature empires (I generally have 3-10 developped homeworlds before
I get to the point where I'd start thinking about producing and
shipping MAT.)
