I've only ever played a role playing game once. It was a Cthulu based game
and for some strange reason the GM decided to cast me in the role of the
captain of a base in the frozen wastes somewhere ( think that was the
scenario, it might have been on an alien planet). At the start of the game I
had to go out and retrieve something and return to the base, with a tiny
amount of fuel to get there and back. When I'd picked it up I had to give a
burst of the engines to get back to base. My chosen amount of revving set
my machine on a collision course with the base, which would have meant
end of game if I'd crashed. So, roll the dice... I rolled, and didn't get the roll
I needed to steer away. GM - roll again... no luck... roll again. By this time
I'd cottoned on to what a cop out it was, so I kept saying I'd failed, and he
kept saying roll. In the end he came up with a fudge whereby I crashed in
such a way that the machine inflicted only minor damage on the base, and
the game could go on. And he was supposed to be a *good* GM - I
wouldn't like to see a bad one! Having said that, the note passing was a
good wind up, even if it was almost all at my expense (guess who was the
poor old victim at the end).

Nothing to do with what you're talking about really, but what the
heck<g>.
