Here is a site that will get you started: http://www.jacobean.demon.co.uk/galaxy/start.html It includes links to Howard Bampton's Guide to Ship Design, which implicitly covers a lot of basic combat tactics. To summarize very briefly: you have to design fleets rather than single warships; a fleet should contain at minimum a few large guns to shoot down well defended ships, a number of cheap deflectors to distract enemy guns, and a number of small guns to shoot down the opposing deflectors. The guide goes into a lot more detail and is well worth reading. There is also a link to Tim Hughes Strategy Tips, which are worth their weight in gold. I especially recommend the section on why it is worth communicating with all other players - I have played in games where players didn't even know the race names of their neighbors! Those players would do well to consider Tim's advice. There is a link to Jacco van Weert's military strategy guide, which includes the history of one galaxy game. Jacco includes an ideal order of battle, but my guess is that he may never have fully mobilized the entire order of battle that he describes. The general themes are more important than the numbers. There also seems to be an archive of a recent thread on this newsgroup which discussed the value of building and shipping Mat, and also diverged somewhat into the value of static defenses. Up
