Most (all?) football PB(E)M's give ratings to players. Some games have
one overall rating, others have ratings for passing, tackling, shooting etc.
Generally, the higher the rating the better the player. In some games
players ratings will rise and fall without the player getting involved,
usually going up sometimes if the team wins, down when they lose. In
other games, the player gets a certain number of 'coaching points' to
increase the skill levels of their players. The more they win, the more
points they get to use.

In all games, without exception as far as I am aware, the player gets to
choose the tactics. This can be as simple as choosing the team formation
alone, or can go into a lot of detail with regard to playing styles - long ball
etc. Then there's how aggressive to play, and so on.
